1.1. INTRODUCTION
The installation, the adjustment and the maintenance of the product described in this manual
shall be carried out only by qualified personnel.

2. SYSTEM FUNCTION
2.1. INTRODUCTION
The TTE TH 59428 H01 Vx101 and TH 59429 H01 Vx101 RADIOLOGICAL IMAGING
UNITS are designed for radioscopy and fluoroscopy studies on R/F tables and Mobile C-arms.
These RADIOLOGICAL IMAGING UNITS are fully integrated assemblies preset for final
operating conditions.
The TH 59428 H01 Vx101 and TH 59429 H01 Vx101 RADIOLOGICAL IMAGING UNITS
include a 9" X-Ray Image Intensifier (XRII) with its High Voltage Power Supply (HVPS), a
high performance CCD camera, with its compact lens system, and the interface with the
known equipment for the application.
The nominal entrance field size of the TH 59428 and TH 59429 RADIOLOGICAL IMAGING
UNITS is 230 mm.
A Digital memory for image treatment is added.
The housing has been specially designed to follow the application requests ; it can be fastened
on the front or the side flange.

the product allow to remove the cover.

5.2.3.1. Power supply

The Radiological Imaging Unit is supplied using an external 24 V DC ± 10 % power supply.
The + 24 V DC input voltage is on pin 14, 15 and 16 of the sub D 25 female connector. The
pins 14, 15 and 16 are internally connected.
The 0 V input voltage is on pin 1, 2 and 3 of the sub D 25 female connector. The pins 1, 2 and
3, the case of the camera, the case of the HVPS and the Housing of the Radiological Imaging
Unit are internally connected.
The required power for the external 24 V DC power supply is 18 W during operation.
DURING THE SWITCHING ON OF THE RADIOLOGICAL IMAGING

! UNIT, THE INPUT CURRENT CAN BE VERY HIGH FOR A SHORT
TIME. THE EXTERNAL 24 V DC POWER SUPPLY MUST ACCEPT
THIS HIGH STARTING CURRENT AND MUST NOT REMAIN UNDER
CURRENT LIMITATION.
5.2.3.2. XRII field selection

FOR TH 59428 H01 V0101 and TH 59428 H01 V1101 ONLY
Magn 1 is selected when the pin 18 of the sub D 25 female connector is connected to + 24 V.
Magn 2 is selected when the pin 5 of the sub D 25 female connector is connected to + 24 V.
Normal mode is selected when the pin 5 and the pin 18 are open

5.2.3.3. Photocathode current

A voltage proportional to the photocathode current of the XRII is available between pin 17 (+)
and pin 4 (-) of the sub D 25 female connector.
The sensivity is 100 mV / nA.
The maximum output voltage on pin is 5 V.
5.2.3.4. Camera synchronisation

A square signal, synchronised with the image, is available on pin 22 of the sub D 25 female
connector. This signal could be used to synchronise the X-Ray generator to the video signal
when the X-rays are pulsed.
THISRADIOLOGICAL IMAGING UNIT IS DESIGNED TO WORK WITH
! CONTINUOUS X-RAYS, OR PULSED X-RAYS AT THE FRAME

FREQUENCY.
5.2.3.5. Remote controls

Some functions of the Radiological Imaging Unit are controlled by grounding a pin of the
sub D 25 female connector. These functions are the video gain selection, the ABC set-up point
selection, the full image blanking, the Last Image Hold, the image inversion and the recursive
filter.
A PIN OF THE SUB D 25 FEMALE CONNECTOR IS

GROUNDED MEANS THAT IT IS CONNECTED TO THE 0 V CAMERA
REFERENCE, PIN 10, THROUGH THE KEYBOARD.

THE PIN 10 OF THE SUB D 25 FEMALE CONNECTOR

MUST NOT BE USED TO CARRY THE POWER TO THE
RADIOLOGICAL IMAGING UNIT.

6.3. OPERATION

To improve the performances, the protective cover at the XRII entrance can be removed.
IN THE CASE OF THE INPUT PROTECTIVE COVER HAS BEEN

REMOVED, DO NOT TOUCH THE ALUMINIUM INPUT
WINDOW OF THE XRII. THIS ULTRA THIN WINDOW IS
UNDER VACUUM AND AT 250 V.
NO SPECIFIC ADJUSTMENT IS REQUIRED IF THE
APPLICATION REQUESTS THE FACTORY SETTINGS

7.2.3. Video Gain

The Radiological Imaging Unit allows four operating modes in terms of video gain :
- a fixed gain used only to calibrate the camera ;
- the Automatic Gain Control which allows to maintain a constant video level on a large
entrance dose range ;
- the adjustable gain which is set during installation ;
- the remote controlled gain which is adjusted from the keyboard with a 0 to 10 V external
voltage.
The gain mode is the same on both video before digital output and video after digital output.
7.2.3.1. Selection
The selection of the different gain modes is made using SW5 on the side of the camera and the
pins 6 and 19 of the sub D 25 female connector.
The fixed gain is used in our factory for calibration. It is selected when SW5 is on the 0
position.
The normal operating position of SW5 is 1.
The following chart gives the selected gain mode depending on pin 6 and pin 19.

7.2.3.2. Automatic Gain Control

The potentiometer P11, white auto level, on the side of the camera, allows to change the
stabilised video level in AGC mode. This video level can be adjusted between 200 mV
and 500 mV.

7.2.3.3. Adjustable gain

The potentiometer P9, manual gain, on the side of the camera, allows to change the value of
the video gain in adjustable gain mode. The gain can be adjusted from a minimum value which
gives a video signal of 700 mV for an input dose at the limit of the CCD saturation to a
maximum value which gives a video signal of 150 mV for an input dose at 1/30 of the CCD
saturation level.

7.2.3.4. Remote controlled gain

The video gain can be controlled with an external DC voltage applied on the pin 19 of the sub
D 25 female connector. The reference for this voltage is the 0 V camera reference on pin 10.
For an external voltage of 0 V, the video gain is at its minimum value.
For an external voltage of 10 V, the video gain is at its maximum value.

7.2.4. Gamma
Three values are available for the gamma correction : 0.4 , 0.6 and 1 (1 is also called linear).
The gamma is the same on both video before digital output and video after digital output.
Selection
The gamma selection is made during the installation. Two switches on the side of the camera
(SW8 and SW9) allow to choose the gamma factor.
The following chart gives the gamma factor depending on the position of SW8 and SW9 :

7.2.5. Black Level

The black level can be adjusted between 0 and 150 mV using the potentiometer P10, black
level, on the side of the camera.
7.2.6. Video Circle

The video circle (or circular blanking) allows to mask the non-useful part of the image, around
the output screen of the XRII. It is enabled or disabled using SW1, video, on the top of the
camera.
The centering of the video circle has been made in our factory. The diameter of the video circle
can be changed using the potentiometer P6, video circle, on the top of the camera.
7.2.7. Full Image Blanking

The pin 9 of the sub D 25 female connector allows to blank the full image when it is connected
to the ground (0 V camera reference, pin 10). That could be used to avoid a flash on the monitor
during a radiographic exposure when the Radiological Imaging Unit is used on a R&F system.
This feature can be disabled during the installation using SW4, full image blanking, on the side
of the camera. In the case of SW4 is on the 0 position, the pin 9 of the sub D 25 female
connector does not have any effect. SW4 allows, during the installation, to choose if grounding
pin 9 will blank or not the image, depending on the final user. Some doctors prefer to have the
flash during the radiographic exposure to be sure that it has been done.

7.2.8. Auto Circle

The auto circle is the measuring window for the Automatic Gain Control and for the Automatic
Brightness Control. The average signal into the window is taken into account to control the
video gain (AGC) and the dose (ABC).
7.2.8.1. Selection
The measuring window is displayed on the monitor when SW2, auto, on the top of the camera,
is on the ON position (SW1, video, must be on the OFF position).
7.2.8.2. Adjustment
The diameter of the measuring window can be adjusted between 20 % and 100 % of the image
diameter using P5, auto circle, on the top of the camera.
IT IS NECESSARY TO SET THE VIDEO CIRCLE (CIRCULAR BLANKING)

BEFORE DOING THE MEASURING WINDOW DIAMETER ADJUSTMENT.
! ANY CHANGE IN THE VIDEO CIRCLE DIAMETER WILL AFFECT THE
MEASURING WINDOW.
7.2.9. Auto Brightness Control

The Radiological Imaging Unit provides signals that could be sent to the X-Ray generator in
order to stabilise the brightness of the image. This function is called ABC (Auto brightness
Control).
To suit a great number of X-Ray generators, the Radiological Imaging Unit provides three kinds
of ABC signals :
- the analog ABC voltage ;

- the analog ABC current ;
- the two digital ABC signals.
USING THIS FUNCTION, SOME PRECAUTIONS HAVE TO BE

TAKEN TO LIMIT THE MAXIMUM DOSE IN ORDER TO PREVENT
PATIENT INJURY.
7.2.9.1. Analog ABC voltage

The camera compares the signal into the measuring window (Vlev) to a reference (Vset). For
large bright areas into the measuring window (low frequencies), Vlev is the peak value into the
window (peak detector). For small areas (high frequencies), Vlev is the mean value into the
window (integrator). This kind of circuit is a good compromise between peak detection and
average detection and is suitable for a large range of applications.

The analog ABC voltage is available on the pin 21 of the sub D 25 female connector. It varies
between 0 V and + 12 V. If the video level into the measuring window (Vlev) is lower than the
adjusted voltage reference (Vset), the analog ABC voltage is close to 0 V. It means that the
entrance dose is too low : the X-Ray generator will increase the dose and the analog ABC
voltage will goes up. If the video level into the measuring window (Vlev) is higher than the
adjusted voltage reference (Vset), the analog ABC voltage is close to + 12 V . It means that the
entrance dose is too high : the X-Ray generator will decrease the dose and the analog ABC
voltage will goes down. The entrance dose will be stabilised at the level which maintain the
analog ABC voltage at about + 6 V.
7.2.9.2. Set-point selection

Two pre-adjusted set-points (Vset) are available. The selection is made using the pin 7 of the
sub D 25 female connector as follows :

7.2.9.3. set-point adjustment

Vset of the first set-point is adjusted using P7, auto kV set-point, on the top of the camera. It
has been adjusted in our factory to get + 6 V on the analog ABC voltage output when the video
level after the CCD is at 10 % of the CCD saturation level.
Vset of the second set-point is adjusted using P12, auto kV 2nd set-point, on the side of the
camera. It has been adjusted in our factory to get + 6 V on the analog ABC voltage output when
the video level after the CCD is at 20 % of the CCD saturation level.
P7 and P12 move the analog ABC voltage curve laterally as shown on the following figure.

THE SECOND SET-POINT ADJUSTMENT DEPENDS ON THE FIRST
ONE: A CHANGE ON THE FIRST SET-POINT ADJUSTMENT WILL
AFFECT THE SECOND ONE WITH THE SAME DIFFERENCE.
THE SECOND SET-POINT LEVEL IS ALWAYS HIGHER THAN THE FIRST
ONE.

7.2.9.4. ABC gain adjustment

Depending on the time response of the generator, the slope of the analog ABC voltage response
can be adjusted using P8, auto kV gain, on the top of the camera. P8 changes the slope of the
analog ABC voltage response as shown on the following figure.
Both set-point 1 and set-point 2 are affect by this adjustment.

7.2.9.5. Analog ABC current

The Radiological Imaging Unit can provide a negative current proportional to the video level
into the measuring window (Vlev). This current looks like the current provided by a photo
multiplier and is available, through a 1 MΩ resistor, on the BNC called ABC. The following
figure shows the analog ABC current device.

The test point near the BNC called ABC shows the form of the response before the 1 MΩ
resistor.

To have a response proportional to the video level into the measuring window, the auto kV gain
(P8) must be at the minimum value (clockwise). In this case, the auto kV set-point (P7) can be
used like an offset adjustment as shown on the following figure.

DESCRIBED.
7.2.9.6. digital ABC

Two outputs on the sub D 25 female connector provide digital signals (0 V or 12 V) depending
on the average video level into the measuring window (Vlev) :
- a high level on ABC+, pin 20, indicates that Vlev > Vset + ε (it means that the X-Ray dose
is too high) ;
- a high level on ABC-, pin 8, indicates that Vlev < Vset - ε (it means that the X-Ray dose is
too low).
If Vlev = Vset ± ε, the two outputs are at the low level : it means that the X-Ray dose it at the
required level.
Vset, is the adjusted set-point.
The two set-points described on the chapter analog ABC voltage are available. The set-point
adjustments are made using P7, auto kV set-point and P12, auto 2nd kV set-point.
ε depends on the gain of the ABC circuit described on the chapter analog ABC voltage. It is
adjustable using P8, auto kV gain.

7.2.9.7. ABC leds

Two leds on the top of the camera also indicate the state of the ABC device :
- a yellow led indicates that Vlev > Vset + ε (it means that the X-Ray dose is too high) ;
- a red led indicates that Vlev < Vset - ε (it means that the X-Ray dose is too low).
If Vlev = Vset ± ε, the two leds are off : it means that the X-Ray dose it at the required level.
The following figure shows the relation between the analog ABC voltage, the digital ABC
outputs and the two leds. The analog ABC current does not appear on this drawing because it
needs a particular adjustment.

7.2.10. Shading Correction

The camera of the Radiological Imaging Unit provides a shading correction which allows to
compensate the non uniformity of the X-Ray flow and of the X-Ray Image Intensifier.
7.2.10.1. Selection
SW3, shading selection, on the top of the camera, enables the shading correction function when
it is on the ON position.
7.2.10.2. Adjustment
Four potentiometers on the top of the camera allow to adjust the form of the correction :
- P1, H shading symmetry, allows to compensate a horizontal tilt effect (see figure
below) ;

7.2.11. Iris And Focus

Two holes on the top of the camera allow to adjust the iris aperture and the mechanical focusing
of the camera.
7.2.11.1. Iris adjustment

During the factory setting, the iris aperture is adjusted to get the beginning of the CCD
saturation for a dose of 300 µR/s (75 kVp - 2 mm Cu - uniform X-Ray flow) in the entrance
plane of the Radiological Imaging Unit. The beginning of the CCD saturation is detected by
looking, with an oscilloscope, the signal available on the test point video just after CCD, on the
top of the camera.
IFTHE FACTORY IRIS ADJUSTMENT HAS BEEN LOOSEN, SEE "IRIS
ADJUSTMENT" ON THE TEST REPORT. THIS VALUE INDICATED THE
! POSITION OF THE ADJUSTMENT IN QUARTER OF TURN WITH
RESPECT TO THE TOTALLY OPEN POSITION.
7.2.11.2. Focus adjustment

The factory adjustment should not be modified.
7.2.12. Digital Treatment

Two BNC connectors called video AFTER digital provide a video signal after the digital
treatment. The signal is exactly the same on these two outputs. Three functions are available on
these video output :
- the recursive filter ;
- the Last Image Hold ;
- the H and V inversion ;
7.2.12.1. Recursive filter

Five factors (1, 2, 4, 8 and 16) are remote selectable through the sub D 25 female connector.
Factor 1 means that the recursive filter is disabled. The recursive filter introduces a controlled
lag and allows to improve the signal to noise ratio (a factor of 2 introduces a lag equivalent to a
standard VIDICON).

The pins 24 (recurs. filter 4), 12 (recurs. filter 8) and 25 (recurs. filter 16) allow to select the
factor of the recursive filter as follows :

7.2.12.2. Last Image Hold

This function freezes immediately the image stored in the digital memory when the pin 13 of
the sub D 25 female connector is grounded.
If the pin 13 is activated in the same time that the X-rays are switched off, the last full image is
maintained on the monitor until the X-rays are switched on again.
7.2.12.3. H and V inversion

The image can be horizontally and vertically inverted. The pin 11 of the sub D 25 female
connector controls the horizontal inversion. The pin 23 of the sub D 25 female connector
controls the vertical inversion.
Two switches on the side of the camera allow to pre-invert the image during the installation,
depending on the system configuration. SW6 controls the horizontal pre-inversion and SW7
controls the vertical pre-inversion.
The following charts give the state of the image depending on pin 11, pin 23, SW6 and SW7 :

7.3. XRII FIELDS ADJUSTMENTS

Three encoders located on the side of the High Voltage Power Supply allow to adjust the U1,
U2 and U3 voltage of the selected mode.
HVPS ADJUSTMENT
To adjust the U1, U2 and U3 voltages for a
magnification mode, do as follows :
- set the switch 1 to OFF to unlock the
voltages ;
OFF
- select the chosen mode ;
ON - turn the G1, G2, G3 encoders with a

screwdriver to adjust the U1, U2, U3
voltages ;
- reset the switch 1 to ON to lock the
voltages.
During operation, the normal position of the switches is ON for number 1 and OFF for numbers
2, 3, 4 and 5.
THE TH 7195 POWER SUPPLY DELIVERS HIGH VOLTAGES

AND UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS SHOULD NOT BE
SWITCHED ON IF THE ELECTRODES ARE DISCONNECTED.
