USER'S MANUAL
Introduction

1 INTRODUCTION

NOTE:
G The present manual contains updated information reflecting the current
status of the product at the moment of sale. This is intended to provide
the user with an adequate guide for the use of the equipment and for
every aspect related to the safety of use.
The manual might not reflect product variations that have no impact on
the operating mode and the safe use of the equipment.

The remote controlled table Apollo is an X-ray equipment that allows to

perform general X-ray examinations. In particular, because of its
connected accessories, the equipment is an optimal solution for
examinations where the use of contrast liquids is required.

The present manual provides the user with instructions for a safe and
efficient use of the equipment.

The equipment must be used in accordance with the procedures

contained in the manual and shall never be used for other purposes than
those provided by the manual itself.

Apollo is an electro medical equipment and, as such, it can be used

solely under the supervision of a physician or of highly qualified
personnel with the necessary competence in matter of protection from X-
rays.

The user is responsible for the fulfilment of the legal requirements

regulating the installation and the functioning of the equipment itself.

2 SAFETY ASPECTS

WARNING:
All information contained in the present Chapter must be carefully read
and, where provided, must be applied in order to avoid damage to the
equipment or to people.

Villa Sistemi Medicali designs and manufactures equipment in

compliance with safety requirements; moreover, it provides all necessary
information for an appropriate use and warnings about the dangers
associated with X-ray generators.

Villa Sistemi Medicali does not take any responsibility for:

• the use of Apollo equipment different from the one it was originally
designed for.
• damages to the equipment, to the operator, to the patient caused by
both wrong installation and maintenance not in conformity with the
procedures contained in the equipment's user and maintenance
manuals, and by incorrect operating techniques.
• mechanical and/or electrical modifications performed during or after
installation.

Only Villa Sistemi Medicali authorised personnel can provide

technical assistance for the equipment.

2.1 Warnings

Apollo is suited for use in hospital, therefore the line connection may not
be carried out in buildings with domestic-type power supply lines.

The equipment was not designed to be used in the presence of vapours,

anaesthetic mixtures inflammable when in contact with air, oxygen or
nitrous oxide.

In order to prevent risks of short-circuit and corrosion, avoid the

infiltration of water of other liquids in the equipment.

Before cleaning the equipment, always ensure it is disconnected from the

line.

All movements are controlled by a powerful and sophisticated electronic

microprocessor system. Speeds, positions, starts and stops of these
movements are controlled and managed by the equipment's logic. Safety
aspects are fundamental in this logic in order to ensure the maximum
safety both for the patient and the operator. Nevertheless, the operator
MUST ALWAYS PAY CLOSE ATTENTION when a movement is activated.
Press the EMERGENCY red buttons located on the control console and
on the front side of the equipment in case of danger. These buttons will
immediately stop any movement and function. They are a valid
instrument for the operator in addition to the intrinsic safety devices of
the equipment.

Before activating motorised parts, such as the tilting, the tabletop,

the angulation or the scan, ensure that the patient is correctly
positioned and that their legs and arms are positioned within the
shape of the tabletop. If possible, use the support handgrips. During
the motorised movements, no objects interfering with the movements
should be in proximity of the table.

Pay close attention to people in the X-ray room.

Although Apollo was designed with a high degree of protection from

electromagnetic interference, the equipment must be installed at a
certain distance from the electrical energy transformation cabins, from
static uninterruptible power supplies, from walkie-talkies and cellular
phones. The latter two may only be used at the distances from any
element of the equipment reported in the following page.

100 mW 1
1W 3
10 W 8
100 W 30

Instruments or systems used in close proximity to Apollo must be in

compliance with the Electromagnetic Compatibility regulations. Non-
compliant instruments, with known scarce immunity to electromagnetic
fields, must be installed at a distance of at least 3 mt (9.84 feet) from
Apollo and must be powered through a dedicated electric line.

Apollo is suited for use in the following electromagnetic environment:

Electromagnetic
Conformity EMC usage environment
emissions
Irradiated and A class Apollo can be connected to a power
conducted emissions supply line different from the domestic
line.
CISPR 11 Group I Apollo generates Radio Frequency
energy only for internal functioning. The
generated R.F. level does not cause
interference with the electrical devices
used nearby.
Emitted harmonic Complying Apollo can be connected to a power
EN 61000-3-2 supply line different from the domestic
line.
Flicker EN 61000-3-3 Complying Apollo can be connected to a power
tension/emission supply line different from the domestic
fluctuations line.
EN 60601-1-2 immunity Complying Apollo can be connected to a power
(EN 61000-4-2 /3 /4 /5 supply line different from the domestic
/6 /8 /11) line.

In case of line voltage dips that last longer than what can be sustained by
the table electronic control system, the examination in progress may be
cancelled. As a consequence, the tabletop and scan movements, as well
as the angulation, that may cause damage to the patient become
inhibited. The spot film device will be initialised and, in case the cassette
is loaded, on the display a warning will ask the operator to remove it
before proceeding.

2.2 Radioprotection warnings

Villa Sistemi Medicali designs and manufactures equipment in

compliance with safety requirements; moreover, it provides all necessary
information and warnings about the dangers associated with equipment
connected to X-ray generators.

The personnel authorised to perform X-ray examinations must observe

all regulations regarding the protection against ionizing radiation as
reported below:
• Use dedicated protections (leaded clothing) to protect the patient from
X-rays diffused in the areas adjacent to the one to be X-rayed.
• During X-ray examinations, only the patient is allowed to stay in the
room. Medical and paramedic personnel or specifically authorised
personnel, if required by the examination, may also be present only if
wearing radioprotective clothing. The personnel in the room, during
the examination in progress, must stay in the areas indicated in the
figures below.

3.2 Description

The remote controlled Apollo table is the latest development of remote

controlled tables produced by Villa Sistemi Medicali.

Apollo table is available in the traditional configuration with a Spot Film

Device or in the "All Digital" version, where the Spot Film Device is not
present and the table necessarily has to be completed by Digital Image
acquisition system.

The most recent features applied to this type of table have been
incorporated and further improved. In particular:
• the mechanical construction
• the cassette's loading/unloading inside the SFD
• the removal of components' numerous supporting frames, so that the
components become "self-supporting".

The fundamental functional concepts of the Apollo table are:

• smallest possible space occupied
• patient coverage simply through the longitudinal movement of the U
arc
• elevating tabletop with parts rotation system as opposed to sliding
system
• modern, concept winning appearance and design
• operator's rear access without barriers towards the patient
• reduced skin-to-film distance or skin-to-I.I. entrance distance in the
"All Digital" version
• carbon fibre or plastic tabletop, with slight curvature or flat surface
and integrated accessories holder profiles
• reduced I.I.-film distance to avoid the parallax correction
• reduced-dimension console with new functional concepts.

Movements and complex functions are controlled by the remote-control

console located in the protected X-ray area.
The main table movements are replicated on the control panel on the side
of the table.
All electric and electronic control and logic elements, except for the
console, are grouped in a single electric cabinet, which also houses the
control modules for the system accessories.

The Apollo table, in its traditional configuration, is equipped with a Spot

Film Device that permits the use of commonly used cassettes of any type.
The format division program is very complete and is described in another
paragraph.

(Rev. 2) 13 APOLLO
USER'S MANUAL
Safety aspects

An automatic collimator, controlled by a central logic, sets the limits for

the irradiated area.
The collimator can be of square-rectangular collimation type or iris type,
which has circular field collimation in addition to square rectangular
collimation. The "All Digital" version is equipped always with an iris type
collimator.

To meet the requirements of fluoroscopic modality and image acquisition

by means of digital systems, the table is setup to accept image
intensifiers from a minimum of 9" (nominal) maximum input field up to a
maximum of 16" (nominal).

The intensifier is fixed by default by docking it to the Spot Film Device or

to an equivalent support in the "All Digital" version, by means of an
upper mount anchor plate. As an option, a device called "elevating I.I." is
available. This allows to raise the input surface of the I.I. closer to the
patient when the cassette is not in the exposure position.
In "All Digital" version, the II is located closer to table top, consequently
I.I. lift is not available in this configuration.
All movement controls are of "dead man" type.

Apollo was designed and built in compliance with European directives

for obtaining the CE mark as specified in the European Directive 93/42
for Medical Devices, guaranteeing the highest safety for both the operator
and the patient.

Apollo is a universal table for radiological diagnosis, built to satisfy all

needs. It can be employed for the examination of the digestive tract, of
the cranium, and of the skeleton, urographies, myelographies, vascular
and lungs examinations, bronchography. When fitted with a digital
acquisition system, it can also be used for angiographies.

The ID code of the equipment varies according to the type of collimator

and to the voltage.

Apollo is available with both standard and optional accessories. The

following table lists all the accessories and divides them as standard, i.e.
those usually coming with the equipment, and optional accessories,
which must be specifically requested when ordering the equipment.

5 PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS

5.1 Powering ON and OFF

The powering on of Apollo table depends on the type of connection used

for the system.

Typically, the table is powered on when the generator is activated by

means of the ON button.

When the table is powered on, the display shows the release version of
the software installed on the machine for 3 seconds.

Likewise, the table is powered off when the system is deactivated by

using the OFF button located on the generator.

WARNING:
Power supply connections and Apollo powering on and off operations
different from those indicated above, do not comply with the directives
approved by Villa Sistemi Medicali and which are clearly stated in the
Apollo table Service Manual.

In case of emergency, the system can be shut down and all Apollo table
movements can be immediately stopped as well as all the X-ray system
functions by pressing the emergency switch
located on the side of the spot film device and on the control console.

NOTE:
G When powering on Apollo table, if the cassette is in the spot film device,
the following message is displayed

<< WARNING Cassette loaded. Press

the button on the spot film device to remove it. >>

The movements controlled by the joysticks will not be activated until the
cassette is completely removed.
In this case, the removal button "45" on the console is not available. To
remove the cassette press the removal button "18" on the side of the
table. Press and hold this button until the cassette comes out enough of
the spot film device window to be removed; release button "18" and
remove the cassette. If the key is kept pressed for too long, the cassette
will be ejected and may drop to the floor.
The warning message disappears and Apollo table functions are
activated.

The Spot film modality is not available on the Apollo table Digital
version.

APOLLO 28 (Rev. 2)
USER'S MANUAL
Preliminary operations

5.2.1 Spot film device modality

The selection of the Spot film device modality involves the use of the spot
film device to carry out standard X-rays that use as image receptor an X-
ray film or a direct sensor, in case of CR systems. In both cases, a
cassette needs to be positioned inside the spot film device.

To access such operating mode, set "Spot film device" as working place
on the generator console and select the dedicated function button "13"
on the Apollo console.
The tube-collimator group must be centered on the spot film device, thus,
no tube rotation angle needs to be set.

Access to all operations relative to this type of modality are described in

paragraph 6.2.

The Spot film modality is not available on the Apollo Digital table
version.

5.2.2 Digital modality

Examinations carried out in Digital modality involve the use of the image
intensifier rather than the x-ray film as image receptor.
This modality is available only in case the system is fitted with a digital
image acquisition device.

NOTE:
G This modality can be used also in the standard version with Spot Film
Device.

To access the digital modality, select the relative working place by using
the control on the generator console.
If a cassette is present inside the Spot Film Device, the Digital modality is
inhibited.
The choice of Digital modality, with cassette in the Spot Film Device, will
generate the message on the display:
<< Remove cassette >>
To eccess Digital modality, remove the cassette.

The tube-collimator group must be centered on the I.I., thus, no tube

rotation angle has to be set.

(Rev. 2) 29 APOLLO
USER'S MANUAL
Preliminary operations

5.2.3 Direct modality

When the Direct modality is selected, it is possible to carry out

examinations using image receptors external to the Apollo table such as,
for example, chest stands or patient direct-contact cassette.
In this modality, it may be necessary to rotate the tube-collimator group
to obtain a position not centered on the spot film device or on the image
intensifier.
To rotate the tube-collimator, refer to section 6.5.7.

To access the Direct modality, select the relative working place by using
the control on the generator console.
In this modality the fluoro control is not available, while the preparation
and X-ray controls are active both on the Apollo table and on the
generator.

5.2.4 Tomography modality

The Tomography modality for the Apollo table consists of a sophisticated

algorithm.
The tomography takes place thanks to an arc movement of the X-ray
tube and to a plane movement of the image receptor that, depending on
the set modality, can be the spot film device or the image intensifier.
The system can be set in such a way that the Tomography modality can
also be spot film and digital.
The tomography direction can be right or left, and the sequential function
can be selected.
This function permits to carry out tomographies in rapid sequence with
automatic layer increment.
Press the dedicated function key "11" on the console to access to
tomographic modality.
Access to all operations relative to this type of modality are described in
paragraph 6.8.

APOLLO 30 (Rev. 2)
USER'S MANUAL
Preliminary operations

5.2.5 Stepping angio modality

The Stepping angio modality is an optional function for Apollo table. To

carry out examinations in such modality, the system needs to be
equipped with a digital image acquisition, storage, and processing device.
Such modality permits to carry out angiographic examinations on the
peripheral organs. The characteristic of this modality is the semi-
automatic movement tracking the contrast liquid.
Such modality permits to limit the quantity of contrast liquids given to
the patient.
Press the dedicated function key "12" on the console to access the
modality.
The operating instructions regarding this modality are described in
paragraph 6.9.

6 OPERATING FUNCTIONS

NOTE:
G The procedures indicated in the following paragraphs, refer to the Figure
9 at the end of this Chapter.
To easily consult such Figure, open the page in a way that it can be
viewed when reading the procedures.

6.1 Collimator

The Apollo table was designed to accept square field or square field with
iris collimators, both pre-set to function in Manual, Automatic and Hold
modality.
The two types of collimators are fitted with a halogen lamp that projects a
luminous field of the same size of the X-ray field.

The table is fitted with shutters inside the serial changer that, by
reducing the effects of the stray radiation, allow for a defined separation
between images of the same film.

(Rev. 2) 32 APOLLO
USER'S MANUAL
Operating functions

6.1.1 Collimator light

1 22

v Description
The collimator is always fitted with a halogen lamp that, by projecting
a luminous field of the same size of the X-ray field, enables the
centering of the patient without fluoro exposures.

v Ease of operation
The collimator light can be switched on by using button "22" on
Apollo console or button "1" on the panel on the side of the table.

The time for the light is programmed to remain turned ON for

45 sec. However, it is possible to turn off the light earlier by pressing
again the switch-on button.
The light will come on automatically when pressing the open/close
control buttons on the collimator panel.

WARNING:
The switching on and off cycle of the collimator lamp should not exceed 2
consecutive duty cycles followed by 180 secs. of switching off.
This duty cycle prevents the excessive overheating, caused by the
halogen lamp, of the parts that can come into contact with the operator
or, accidentally, with the patient.

6.1.2 Collimator manual modality

20

48
v Description
The manual adjustment function of the collimator permits to freely
move the collimator's shutters from the minimum to the maximum
position without SID or other restrictions. Its main application is in
examinations with cassettes not positioned in the spot film device
(Direct modality).

WARNING:
In the manual modality, in order to reduce the amount of radiation, the
collimator's opening must be reduced and the maximum source-to-film
distance must be used depending on the type of examination in progress.

v Ease of operation
Press button "20" on the Apollo console to activate the collimation
manual function. The corresponding LED will light up.
The opening and closing movements of the collimator shutters are
activated by means of joystick "48" on the console or by means of the
controls on the collimator panel.

When one or both directions shutters are in the minimum position,

the following message is displayed:
<< Collimator closed >>

(Rev. 2) 34 APOLLO
USER'S MANUAL
Operating functions

WARNING:
In case an iris collimator is present, iris control buttons "23" and "24" on
the control console are not active and the iris is always circumscribed to
the limitation base and height directions.

• Direct modality:
When the direct modality is activated, the manual collimation
function is automatically set and the manual function LED near
button "20" on the console lights up.
Thanks to the collimator's manual function, it is possible to carry
out projections on chest stands or on cassettes in direct contact
with the patient by freely moving the collimator shutters from the
minimum to the maximum position by means of joystick "48" or by
means of the controls on the collimator panel.

• Spot film modality:

When the spot film device modality is activated, the collimator
automatic function is set by default. To operate in the manual
modality, select the manual function by pressing button "20" on
the control console. The manual function LED on the console
lights up and stays on regardless whether the fluoro control is on
or off.

The operating logic of the manual collimation function in spot film

modality is described below:
– If no program is selected, when the fluoro control is not active,
by means of joystick "48" or by means of the controls on the
collimator panel, it is possible to collimate a format between
the minimum and maximum values.
The leaded shutters inside the spot film device follow the
collimator's base collimation.
When the fluoro control is activated, the maximum format
available is equal to the selected I.I..
– When selecting a program whose format is smaller in
comparison with the format of the selected I.I., the collimator
positions itself on the division format (which is the largest
possible format). By using joystick "48" or by means of the
controls on the collimator panel, it will therefore be possible to
collimate a format comprised between the minimum and the
division format.
This condition is valid regardless whether the fluoro control is
activated or not.
The shutters inside the spot film device follow the base
collimation in case of a further reduction by means of joystick
"48" or by means of the controls on the collimator panel. The
shutters inside the spot film device do not follow the collimator
base limitation if only a cross division has been selected.

APOLLO 35 (Rev. 2)
USER'S MANUAL
Operating functions

– If you select a program whose format is larger than the one of

the selected I.I., when the fluoro control is not active, by
means of joystick "48" or by means of the collimator panel
controls, it will be possible to position the base and height
shutters on formats comprised between the minimum and the
selected format.
Conversely, when the fluoro control is activated, the maximum
possible format is the one of the selected I.I. field.
When the fluoro control is released, the shutters go back to the
position in which they found themselves before the activation
of the fluoro control.
– At any time, the automatic collimator function may be
selected. Both shutters will position themselves on the
smallest format between the selected I.I. and the cassette
division.
– If the equipment is powered off when the collimator is in the
manual mode, when powering back on, the automatic function
will be activated.

• Digital modality
In Digital modality, the manual collimation can never be set.

23 24

48
v Description
The automatic collimation function permits the automatic positioning
of the collimation shutters on the smallest format between the
selected I.I. and the cassette division, in accordance with the set
operating modalities.
The automatic collimation can be set by always taking into account
the SID.
When the automatic collimation function is activated, the size of the
collimated format can nevertheless be reduced, but cannot be
increased.
The automatic collimation function is available in the Spot film and
Digital modalities.

v Ease of operation
By using button "19" on the Apollo console, the collimation
automatic function is activated and the corresponding LED lights up.
The LED stays on regardless whether the fluoro control is activated
or not.
The opening and closing movements of the collimator shutters are
activated by means of joystick "48" on the console or by means of the
controls on the collimator panel.

APOLLO 37 (Rev. 2)
USER'S MANUAL
Operating functions

When one or both shutters are in the minimum position, the

following message is dislayed:

<< Collimator closed >>

• Spot film modality:

When the spot film modality is activated, the collimator automatic
function is set by default.

The operating logic of this function is described below:

– If no program is selected, the collimator positions itself on the
selected I.I. format. By means of joystick "48" or by means of
the controls on the panel of the square/rectangular limitation
collimator, the irradiated area can be reduced to a format
comprised between the set I.I. and the minimum format.
The shutters inside the spot film device follow the base
collimation.
In case the collimator is of the iris type, by pressing buttons
"23" and "24" it is possible to carry out the circular limitation
of the I.I. format.
– When selecting a program whose format is smaller than the
format of the selected I.I., the collimator positions itself on the
division format, which is the largest possible format. By using
joystick "48" or by means of the controls on the collimator
panel, it will therefore be possible to collimate a format
comprised between the minimum and the division format.
The shutters inside the spot film device follow the base
collimation, in case a further reduction by means of joystick
"48" is carried out. The shutters inside the spot film device do
not follow the collimator base limitation if only a cross division
has been set.
– When selecting a program whose format is larger than that of
the selected I.I., the collimator positions itself on the selected
I.I.. By means of joystick "48" or by means of the controls on
the panel of the square/rectangular limitation collimator, the
irradiated area can be reduced to a format comprised between
the set I.I. and the minimum format.
The shutters inside the spot film device follow the base
collimation.
In case the collimator is of the iris type, the circular limitation
of the I.I. format can be carried out by pressing buttons "23"
and "24".

(Rev. 2) 38 APOLLO
USER'S MANUAL
Operating functions

– When the preparation control is activated, the collimator

always positions itself on the selected division format and,
when the preparation control is released, the collimator goes
back to the position it held before the preparation control was
activated.
– At any time the manual collimator function may be selected.

• Digital modality
In Digital modality, the collimator follows the same operating logic
described for the Spot film modality with the only difference that,
when the preparation control is activated, the collimator always
positions itself on the selected I.I. format.

• Direct modality:
In Direct modality, the automatic collimation can never be

6.1.4 Hold automatic collimator

21

NOTE:
G Because in "All Digital" version the exposure is made on I.I., the
collimator position is the same in Fluoro and in Exposure mode.
The Hold function has non sense in this modality.

v Description
The HOLD function permits to keep under exposure a limitation
carried out manually during the fluoro modality, on one or more
directions (base, height, iris).
The HOLD automatic collimation function is available in Spot film
modality in parallel with the automatic collimation function and can
be activated by default or manually. Such settings can be determined
by the technician during installation. The HOLD function can never
be activated when the collimator is in Manual modality.

v Ease of operation
To activate the HOLD automatic collimation function, select the
function key "21", besides the automatic collimation button "19".

The operating logic of the HOLD automatic collimation function is

identical to that of the automatic collimation in Spot film modality
described in the previous paragraph, except if the collimated format
is reduced during the fluoro.
In this case, when the preparation control is activated, the collimator
does not position itself on the division format, but it retains the
reduced collimation position obtained by means of joystick "48" or by
means of controls "23" and "24" during the fluoro.
When limitation is done with HOLD mode active, on control desk
display, the message:

<<HOLD reduction active>>

is generated.
The message remains on display up to the manual or automatic
limitation is resetted.

6.2.1 Cassette loading/unloading

45 18

v Description
The cassette loading in the spot film device is possible at any time on
condition that no other cassette is already inserted in the spot film
device.
In this case, the cassette loading button on the control console or on
the panel on the side of the table will not start the loading procedure,
rather the ejection of the cassette in the spot film device.

v Ease of operation

• Cassette loading:
1. Insert the cassette in the loading slot on the front side of the
spot film device for about half of the length of the side parallel
to the table transversal direction (right-to-left patient).
During this operation, you might notice a certain friction
caused by the presser inside the cassette loading slot that
guides the cassette during the loading/unloading operations.
2. Press the loading button "45" on the console or button "18" on
the panel on the side of the table to insert the cassette in the
spot film device.

Apollo table spot film device was designed and built using highly
modern and sophisticated criteria.
This allows to obtain a very simple and efficient loading and
unloading of the cassette.
In fact, as described above, the cassette can be simply loaded or
unloaded from the load/unload window without any other additional
operations.
This allows to perform one-hand operations, considering that one
hand is always busy holding the spare cassette.
Moreover, the loading system can straighten a cassette loaded in an
approximate manner and perfectly aligned with the spot film device.

APOLLO 43 (Rev. 2)
USER'S MANUAL
Operating functions

Nevertheless, it is advisable to insert the cassette well aligned with

the spot film device to ensure that the definitive orientation of the
cassette is the required one. In fact, during the straightening
procedure, if the cassette is badly aligned, the orientation might be
modified.
In case the cassette is inserted in the loading slot not deep enough to
enable the feeding device to grab it, by pressing the insert button, the
spot film device attempts the loading for 1.5 secs.
At the end of this period, the feeding device is ready to accept a new
loading procedure.
The cassette needs to be removed and reinserted again for about half
the length of the side parallel to the table transversal direction (right-
left patient).
Should the operator remove the cassette from the loading slot after
pressing the insert button, but before the end of the 1.5 secs, a
warning message will be displayed:
<< 300 – Cassette not loaded >>
The equipment needs to be powered OFF to remove the warning.
When the system is turned ON the following message is displayed:
<< WARNING Cassette loaded. Press
the button on the spot film device to remove it >>
To restore correct functionality, press button "18" on the panel on
the side of the table for more than 5 sec.

• Cassette unloading:
The unloading cassette modality varies depending on the value
assigned to the Unloading function shown on the display:
1. In case, by means of function key F2, the value ON is assigned
to the Unloading function, at the end of the exposure program,
the cassette is automatically ejected. The operator will simply
need to wait until the cassette comes out of the loading
window and then remove it.
2. In case, by means of function key F2, the value OFF is
assigned to the Unloading function, at the end of the exposure
program the cassette stays in the spot film device and the
following message is shown on the display
<< Exposed film. Unload cassette >>
To unload the cassette, press the cassette load/unload button
"45" on the control console or button "18" on the panel on the
side of the table, wait until the cassette comes out of the
loading window and remove it.

In both cases, if you need to interrupt a program and unload the

cassette before the end of the exposure program, use the cassette
unload button "18" on the control panel on the side of the table or
button "45" on the control console.

6.5 Movements

This paragraph describes the movements of a few components of the

equipment activated manually, through the joysticks on the control
console or through the buttons on the control on the side of the table.
These movements are:
• Angulation
• Tabletop and tube-scan
• Lift
• Tilting
• SID
• Compressor
• Tube-collimator group.

During operation of the above described movements, the unit is capable

of recognizing conditions of potential collision between parts of the unit
and the barriers present in the room, and thus of automatically limiting
movements in order to prevents risks and damages (as described in detail
in the "Collisions" chapter).
In any case, the operator should always pay the utmost attentions during
executions of movements of the table, in order to avoid risks for the
patient.
Apollo can be equipped with an anti-entrapment feature (standard on
the C-CSA-US versions) which blocks the angulation movement and the
inner tabletop transversal movement should the patient came in contact
with the areas in which the anti-entrapment sensors are located.
In this case the angulation and/or inner tabletop transversal movement
are automatically blocked and it is possible to activate the unit only in
the opposite direction of that which caused the entrapment.

6.5.1 Angulation movement

12 13

10

14

49

v Description
The angulation movement allows a column angulation within a +40°
and -40° range. This permits oblique projections of organs that are
to be examined. The inclination value expressed in degrees is shown
on the display.
The virtual rotation point of the column / spot film device assy can
be modified from the tabletop level up to 350 mm (13.8"). On display
is visualized the virtual fulcrum height in "mm" or "inch" depending
by the selection done at installation. This function, called Tomoscopy,
permits to maintain the centering of an organ even when the
angulation movement is activated.

(Rev. 3) 56 APOLLO
USER'S MANUAL
Operating functions

v Ease of operation
By moving joystick "49" to the left or by pressing button "13" on the
side of the table, it is possible to obtain an angulation movement
towards the head side of the table (negative angles).
Conversely, by moving joystick "49" to the right or by pressing button
"14" on the side of the table, it is possible to obtain an angulation
movement towards the feet side of the table (positive angles).
Close to the end run (+/-40°) the movement will automatically stop.
To obtain the vertical centering of the column with respect to the
table, move joystick "49" up or press button "12" on the side of the
table.
The virtual rotation point can be adjusted by means of buttons "9"
and "10" on the table console from the tabletop level up to 350 mm
(13.8"): button "9" increments the height of the rotation point, while
button "10" decreases the height.

WARNING:
When the angulation of the column gets to –40° or +40° a collision
between the column and the foot rest may happen. Keep under control
the position of the u-arc during column angulation to avoid this risk.

NOTE:
I If the column angulation control is activated when the compressor is not
in the parking position, before the column begins to move, the
compressor is automatically brought to the parking position.

v Limitations
The angulation is inhibited when:
• lift or tilting movements are activated
• tomography function is active
• the aimed function is active
• when the following message is displayed:
<< CEIL TUBE IN FIELD >>
This indicates the presence of an accessory in the room that
could conflict with Apollo and that is not in the parking position.

NOTE:
I If joystick "49" is moved down, all resettable alarms are RESET.
Because all alarms have a pulse acoustic signal, the first time the
joystick is activated the buzzer is turned off, while the second time, the
alarm is reset.
The buzzer can be turned off even on the non-resettable alarms.

6.5.2 Tabletop - scan spot film device-tube movement

34 35

50
v Description
The Apollo table permits a very wide coverage of the patient both
transversally - thanks to the tabletop movement - and longitudinally
- thanks to the scan-tube run.

v Ease of operation
The tabletop and scan-tube movements are controlled by means of
joystick "50" located on the Apollo control console.
Unlike other controls, the movements activated by joystick "50"
change according to the movements orientation modality selected by
the operator by means of buttons "34" and "35".

The operating logic of the two modalities is the following:

1. By selecting button "34", the corresponding LED lights up and
the "MONITOR" orientation modality is activated. This modality
permits to synchronise the joystick movements with the
movements of the image on the monitor.
In this modality, the movements associated with the joystick
control are as follows:
• Joystick DOWN: U-arc moves towards head side
• Joystick UP: U-arc moves towards feet side
• Joystick RIGHT: tabletop moves outwards
• Joystick LEFT: tabletop moves inwards

NOTE:
G At installation of the system, the direction can be reversed with respect to
what described, according to the request of the user.

(Rev. 2) 58 APOLLO
USER'S MANUAL
Operating functions

If the image inversion controls are activated, also the movements

are automatically inverted to maintain the movement in step with
the image.
The Right/Left inversion inverts the tabletop movement, while the
Up/Down inversion inverts the U-arc movement.
2. By selecting button "35", the corresponding LED lights up and
the "TABLE" orientation modality is activated. This modality
permits to synchronise the joystick movements with the actual
movement of the table.
In this modality, the movements associated with the joystick
control are as follows:
• Joystick DOWN: tabletop moves outwards
• Joystick UP: tabletop moves inwards
• Joystick RIGHT: U-arc moves towards feet side
• Joystick LEFT: U-arc moves towards head side

2 3

4 5
The tabletop and U-arc movements can be controlled by means of
buttons "2, 3, 4, 5" on the control panel on the side of the table.
• button "3" activates the inward tabletop movement
• button "4" activates the outward tabletop movement
• button "2" activates the U-arc movement towards the head side
• button "5" activates the U-arc movement towards the feet side
The movements controlled by these buttons are independent of the
orientation modality set on the console.

6.5.3 Tabletop (lift) vertical movement

51

v Description
This movement permits to move the tabletop vertically with respect to
the ground (lift).
This permits to position the examination table at a more comfortable
height to guarantee easier access to patients on stretchers.
The optimal adjustment of the table height also improves the
ergonomics of intervention of the physician on the patient.
The maximum reachable height is 1400 mm (55.1") from the ground;
the minimum height depends on the type of I.I. installed (see
Mechanical features – Chapter 4).

v Ease of operation

NOTE:
G On system installation, a tabletop distance from the floor, used when
tilting or centering movement are activated, different from the minimum
can be selected in a range between 5 and 500 mm (0.2" and 19.7").
If this feature is present, to reach the minimum distance tabletop-floor,
the lift down movement must be used.

The Apollo table allows the operator to choose from two different
tilting speeds (slow and rapid).

By selecting button "36", the corresponding LED lights up and the

slow tilting speed is set. This setting ensures more comfortable
patient movements.
To speed up a position change, select a faster tilting speed by
pressing button "37". This setting is indicated by the corresponding
LED's lighting up.
When the scan is in a position such that the I.I. exceeds the
slowdown area (set-up during installation), the tilting movement
slows down and adjusts its functionality to enable the I.I. to come out
of this condition.
The advantage of this function is to enable the operator to complete
the positioning without stopping the movement or without adjusting
the scan position.

v Limitations
The tilting movement is inhibited when:
• Angulation or scans active
• Compressor movement active
• The following message appears:
<< CEIL TUBE IN FIELD >>
This is caused by an accessory in the room (ceiling suspended
tube) outside the parking position.
• The scan is in proximity of the head side. The maximum
inclination toward Trendelenburg will be limited by the table

function by moving upwards for a short time.

In both cases an acoustic signal indicates that the above

operations have been performed.
At this moment it will be necessary to release and push again the
movement joystick.
The compressor ascent movement is obviously a "dead man"
movement, therefore, if the joystick is released on the way up, the
movement will stop.
By pushing the joystick once again, the ascent function is again
activated regardless of the previous partial ascent.
Only when the ascent function is completed, the 2 movements of
the tabletop and of the scan will be free.
This permits to move the patient with respect to the X-ray beam
and vice versa, avoiding risks to the patient himself.
Once the desired movement has been performed, the
compression can be activated again.

• Compression cone removal

In case of need, the compression cone can be removed from the
compressor device by means of the quick release mechanism "A"
(Figure 8).

v Limitations
The compressor movement is not allowed when the tomography and
stepping angio functions are active. The access to these functions
results in the movement of the compressor to the parking position.

WARNING:
Should the equipment stop when the compression cone is in contact with
the patient, it is possible to rapidly unblock the patient by removing
the cone, acting on the lever “A” of the quick release mechanism
(Figure 8).

6.5.7 Tube-collimator group rotation

v Description
The rotation movement of the tube-collimator group permits to
project the X-ray beam on a receptor different from the spot film
device or from the image intensifier.
To perform exposures by means of the tube in a position different
from 0°, select a direct work modality on the generator.

v Ease of operation
To rotate the tube-collimator group, push the unlocking handgrips
on the side of the collimator.
Push the unlocking handgrips towards the inside to position the tube
in one of the following pre-set positions:
+40° , +50°, +90°, 180°, -50° ,-40° and –90°
with respect to the centered position (0°).
By releasing the handgrips, the tube is locked.
The following message is displayed:
<< Tube not at 0° >>

NOTE:
G When the tube is not in the 0° position, the fluoro control is inhibited,
while the preparation and X-ray controls are active both on the Apollo
table, and on the generator, only if the workstation relative to the direct
modality is set on the generator.

6.6 Limitations and anticollision safety

6.6.1 Collision limit

All movements are controlled via software to avoid collisions between the
equipment's components and the surrounding environment (floor, walls,
ceiling). The anti-collision system is configured via software at
installation by a service engineer who sets the room dimensions.
The parts of the table that can collide with walls, floor or ceiling are: the
image intensifier, the extremities of the main beam (corresponding to the
extremities of the tabletop), the compressor and the tube-collimator
group.
When one of these elements reaches the set security limit, the movement
stops and the following message is displayed:
<< LIMIT REACHED >>
with buzzer.
When the extremities of the main beam, the intensifier or the compressor
reach such limit, movements commands that can bring the element into
collision are suddenly inhibited. On the other hand, movement
commands that can bring the elements away from the collision point are
free.
As to the tube-collimator group, because of the particular Apollo table
lift-tilting function, are inhibited all those movements that apparently
may not be dangerous but, if they continued, could increase the risk of
collision.

The following 4 tables give a description of all possible danger scenarios.

Each represents the "LIMIT REACHED" condition for the tube-collimator
group with regard to the right wall, left wall, ceiling and floor.

In the first pair of columns are indicated the angles in which the table
(RIB) or the column (ANG) could find themselves when the limit is
reached.
"0" referred to the tilting means that the table is on the horizontal
position, "+" indicates that the table is inclined towards the vertical
position and "-" that the table is inclined towards the Trendelemburg.
"0" referred to the angulation indicates that the column is perpendicular
to the table, "+" indicates that the column is inclined towards the feet
and "-" that it is inclined towards the head.

The 5 following pairs of columns indicate the movements and relative

directions that, directly or indirectly, might be responsible for the
movement of the tube-collimator group.
The "YES" cells indicate that the movement is free, and the "NO" cells
that the movement is inhibited, while the grey cells indicate that the
potential collision will never take place for that particular combination of
tilting and angulation angle.

6.6.2 Anticollision barrier

When the room where the device is installed has irregularities in its
geometry that make necessary supplemental anticollision measures, the
Apollo table can be protected against the risk of collision with these
geometrical irregularities of the room.
Depending from the specific needs it is possible to implement light
barrier sensors or antenna switches that when activated prevent table
components from hitting obstacles of the room.
Once the anticollision sensor is activated, the movement in progress is
stopped and a message is displayed:
<< LIMIT BARRIER >>
with an intermittent buzzer sound.
To exit this condition and restore normal operation of the system, it will
be possible to activate only the movement that had generated the "limit
barrier" alarm in the opposite direction.
All other commands (joystick on console and keys on the on-board
keypad) are disabled until the message "limit barrier" is removed.
Table top movement is still active.
If the limit barrier is activated in the following conditions:
• switch on of the system
• access to tomography functionality
• access to angiographic functionality
• during execution of a Tomography test
• during execution of a step angiography test
• movement to reach a stored position by means of command "0".
the movement is stopped and the active functionality, if any, is reset.
In this condition no joystick or button of the on board keyboard is active,
then to exit from this "limit barrier" lock it is necessary to proceed with a
"bypass" procedure as outlined here below.
Keeping pressed at the same time keys F4 and F5, positioned in the lower
end of the display, ALL movement commands by joystick or on board
keyboard are enabled, making possible to start any movement.
This "bypass" procedure is always possible when the "limit barrier"
condition has been reached.
In all cases, leaving the alarm condition, the table will enter spot film
device modality; it will then be necessary to repeat the necessary
procedure if a different modality is needed.

WARNING:
This "bypass" procedure can be very dangerous since a wrong command
can cause any part of the table to hit the obstacle in the room. Before
giving any movement command it is necessary to check carefully which
movement will bring the table far away from the obstacle. In any case
always activate the movement with great care in short pulses.

Operating functions

v Ease of operation
During installation, a default position is stored in all three available
memories. The default position refer to:
• 0° tilting
• Minimum lift depending on I.I.
• Scan-tube in the middle
• 0° angulation
• Minimum SID
• Tabletop in the middle
• Compressor in parking position
• Slow tilting speed
• Movements orientation in MONITOR modality.
In this condition, the LEDs associated to buttons "15", "16" and "17"
are off.
To store a new position, bring the table to the desired position, select
the tilting speed and the movements orientation, and finally hold
pressed for 5 seconds the button you want to associate the selection
with.
The following message will be displayed:
<< Position stored >>
The corresponding LED lights up.
To recall a previously stored selection, simply select the
corresponding button "15", "16" or "17" and move joystick "54" to the
left.
The table will move to the stored position according to the following
sequence:
• Compressor in parking position
• SID
• Tabletop

6.8 Tomography

11

52

v Description
Apollo is pre-set to perform tomographies both in spot film device
and digital modality. The tomography takes place thanks to an arc
movement of the X-ray tube and to a plane movement of the image
receptor that, depending on the set modality, can be the spot film
device or the image intensifier.

v Ease of operation
Ø Tomo modality access
To access the tomo function, select the dedicated button "11" on
the table control desk.
The function LED on the control desk starts blinking and the
following message is displayed:
<< TOMO MODALITY ACCESS

This warns the operator that the equipment is not ready for a
new tomography.
Move joystick "52" down to bring the angulation back to position
0°.

Ø Escape from tomography modality

To escape the tomography modality, select the spot film device
modality on the Apollo table by pressing button "13".
The following message will be displayed:
<< ESCAPE TOMO MODALITY

To complete the escape operation, move function "52" joystick
down.
The SID is driven to a value preset at the installation.
If the joystick is released, the movement stops.
When the positioning has taken place, the LED associated with
the tomography function switches itself off, indicating that the
tomography function is no longer active. The display is
configured in the spot film device modality.

When escaping the tomography function, if button "11" is

pressed again, the tomography escape request is overridden to
allow the activation of the tomography function.

v Limitations
The tomo access is inhibited if:
• The tube is not at 0°
• The access to the angio function is active
• The angio function is active
• The direct modality is set
• The rapid sequence is selected.

APOLLO 81 (Rev. 2)
USER'S MANUAL
Operating functions

A tomography examination cannot be performed if:

• The movement causes the scan to go out the run range. The scan
tomography range varies depending on the set layer angle and
height. If the tomography layer or angle are modified, such
condition might occur.
In this case an intermittent acoustic signal is issued and the
following message is displayed:
<< Scan out of range: Modify
angle, layer or scan pos. >>
They warn the operator that it is possible to perform the
examination if one or more of these parameters is modified.
• The movement causes collisions. In this case an intermittent
acoustic signal is issued and the following message is displayed:
<< Possible collision detected
change positions >>
They warn the operator that it is possible to perform the
examination if the component close to collision limit (typically
tube or I.I.) is changed.

A tomography examination cannot be completed if the movement

causes an infringement of the "limit barrier" (see paragraph 6.6.2).
In this case re-entering the tomography modality it is advisable to
replace the cassette even if some exposures are still available in a
multiple division program.

6.8.1 Tomography direction

v Description
The Apollo table allows the operator to select during the examination
the tomography direction, i.e. the angulation direction associated
with the X-ray emission.

v Ease of operation
• when the option L-R is selected, the column direction during the
X-ray emission (tomography angle) is from left to right.
• when the option R-L is selected, the column direction during the
X-ray emission (tomography angle) is from right to left.

v Limitations
The selection of the tomography direction is inhibited when the aim
modality is set.

APOLLO 83 (Rev. 2)
USER'S MANUAL
Operating functions

6.8.2 Tomography modality

Function key "F2" permits to select the following tomography modalities:

• STD: At the end of each tomography, the column moves back to the
centered position and waits in standby for the next X-ray control.
This permits to perform fluoro examinations between tomographic
exposures and to modify settings for the next tomography.
• SEQ: by selecting the "sequential" tomography modality, it is possible
to perform tomographic examinations in rapid sequence.
Because this modality entails emissions in a sequence, the column
movement during the X-ray emission will be alternated. The direction
setting (F2 key) determines the direction of the first exposure.
The selection of the end-of-exposure layer automatic increment (F3
key) is forced on “AUT”.
Function keys "F4" and "F5" remain active.
In spot film device modality, the number of tomographies in a
sequence depends on the cassette division program. In digital
modality, it is possible to perform a maximum of 6 exposures.
• FIX: This function permits to perform standard X-ray examinations
inside a tomography program alternating standard X-ray exposure to
tomography exposure, without loosing the tomography settings
selected when tomo functionality has been accessed.
In this modality, all function key "F1", "F3", "F4" and "F5" are
deactivated.

6.8.3 Layer height adjustment

10
v Description
The layer height adjustment permits to modify the virtual cut
position inside the organ to be examined.
The layer height value is shown on the display. The range is between
0 and 380 mm (0 and 13.7") with fine adjustment. On accessing the
tomo modality the default value is set to 80 mm (3.1").

v Ease of operation
The position of the layer can be set by means of buttons “9” and
“10”. The update speed of such setting varies depending on how long
the button has been pressed for.
Function key "F3" permits to select between the manual increment
function (MAN) and the automatic increment function (AUT).
• MAN: The "manual increment" function can be activated in
standard tomography modality only.
When this function is set, at the end of each tomography the
cutting layer maintains the same position.
• AUT: The "automatic increment" function of the layer height can
be selected in standard tomography modality. This selection is
forced in sequential tomography modality and, therefore, cannot
be modified.
This function ensures that the height of the layer at the end of a
tomography, increases automatically by an amount that depends
on the set tomography angle, according to the values in the
following table:

ANGLE Increment
7° 30 mm / 1.1"
20° 20 mm / 0.8"
30° 10 mm / 0.4"
45° 5 mm / 0.2"

6.8.4 Tomography speed

v Description
By selecting speed it is possible to vary the tomography time, the
angles being equal. The X-ray dose rate sent to the patient is
modified as well.

v Ease of operation
Function key "F4" permits to select between the slow and the fast
speed.

The tomography times - depending on the set tomography angles and

speed - vary according to the values in the following table:

Grades Speed 1 Speed 2 Speed 3 Speed 4

7 0.6 sec 0.5 sec 0.4 sec 0.3 sec
20 1.8 sec 1.3 sec 1.0 sec 0.9 sec
30 2.6 sec 2.0 sec 1.6 sec 1.3 sec
45 4.0 sec 3.0 sec 2.4 sec 2.0 sec

6.9 Stepping angio

12

52

v Description
Apollo is pre-set to perform stepping angios in digital modality. The
digital stepping angio modality allows the optimisation of
angiography examinations performed with traditional methods.
In fact, if this examination is carried out correctly, it permits to
obtain a complete check of the limb's vascular system, with a
reduced quantity of contrast liquid given to the patient.
This result is obtained thanks to the RX Tube automatic movement –
an image receptor whose function is to follow the contrast liquid
inside the vessels.
Thanks to the technologies employed, the patient receives a reduced
dose of X-rays - besides a reduced amount of injected contrast liquid.
Moreover, the examination stress is reduced as the patient is not
moving. The mechanical components are in fact responsible for the
centering of the anatomies.

G When the I.I. lift movement is activated during fluoroscopy and SFD
mode is active, the switch time between fluoro and radiography can be
significanty longer than in standard operating conditions, since the
system needs time to lower the I.I. and reposition the cassette.

6.11 X-rays preparation control

v Description
Radiography is the primary function of any X-ray equipment.

v Ease of operation
Moving the left control on the pedal command to position I, all
functions for the preparation of the X-ray tube for X-ray emissions
are enabled.
Concurrently, the equipment pre-sets some parts to receiving
radiations.
By selecting position II, X-rays are emitted.
The activation of the preparation control, stops all movements
included the collimator's manual movement. During the tomography
program, only the angulation is active.

The following programs are available for the X-ray preparation:

• In spot film device mode:
– Standard
– Rapid sequence
– Tomography
• In digital mode (if the system is fitted with a digital acquisition
system):
– Digital radiography
– Digital tomography
– Stepping angio
• In direct mode:
– direct exposure on the cassette outside the spot film device.

Diagnosis

7 DIAGNOSIS
The Apollo table software is pre-set for the self diagnosis of the
equipment.
When a diagnosis condition is detected the table movements stop and the
accessories controls are inhibited. A warning is shown on the display
together with an acoustic signal.
There are 2 main types of warnings:

v Functional alarms
This group's warnings are generated by functional errors due to the
operator's wrong manoeuvres or by external accessories.
As these warnings do not generate risk or danger conditions for the
patient, the operator or the equipment itself, they can be reset
without powering off the equipment.
By moving joystick "49" down twice, the first time it stops the
acoustic signal, the second time it resets the warning.

v Warnings relative to failures or malfunctioning

This group's warnings are generated by failures to the equipment
components. As these situations could cause risks or danger to the
patient, the operator or the equipment itself, the warnings of this
group cannot be reset.
To remove the causes of failure causes, seek assistance from a
qualified engineer.
