• rug (n) j) what you call a woman on the day she gets married
Here are some more words from the song. Organise them by vowel sound in the table below:
Vocabulary/Pronunciation
Aim: Students learn some new vocabulary and focus on the pronunciation of six vowel sounds to prepare them for a
reading task with the song lyrics.
1) Explain that as it's Valentine's Day you're going to play a love song for the class. Tell students that
before they listen to the song they're going to look at some of the key vocabulary. Hand out one
worksheet to each pair of students in the class and ask them to work on Q1 together. * Get students to
help each other with the words they do know first before using dictionaries to help.
Answers: bee: f; blow: b; bride: j; desire: i; float: h; leaves: a; moat: e; nod: g; pod: c; rug: d
2) Before asking students to complete the pronunciation task in Q2, go through the vowel sounds listed in
the table as a class. Then after familiarising students with each of the sounds, explain that they should
group the given words by vowel sound and write them in the correct column in the table.
Answers:
3) Before the lesson: Prepare a copy of the song lyrics with the last word in each line blanked out. (For
reference, these are the words in the table in “2” above)
In Class: Ask students to work in pairs to attempt to complete the lyrics using the words they've just
grouped together in the table. *Remind the class that in songs, pairs of song lines often rhyme – I.e. if
they read the lyrics and find one word that fits well, then they'll need a word that rhymes in the
next/previous line. Set a time limit of 15 minutes.
4) When the time is up play the song for students to check their answers.
5) Ask students to discuss which line/s they think is/are most romantic, together with a partner. Then
share ideas as a class.
6) To round off the lesson divide the class in two ('As' and 'Bs'), and challenge students to have a 'sing
off'! As you play the song again, all the 'As' should sing the first line; 'Bs' the second, and so on. Explain
that as it's a 'sing off' they should try to out-sing the other team, singing as loudly as they can! T his
really helps the less outgoing members of the class join in with the singing.
