INTRODUCTION:
The weightless environment of space imposes specific physiological
adaptations on healthy Astronauts. On return to Earth, these adaptations
manifest as physical impairment that necessitate a period of rehabilitation.
Major post flight impairments requiring rehabilitation intervention include
Orthostatic intolerance
Bone demineralization
Muscular atrophy
Neuro-vestibular symptoms
The pioneering efforts of intelligent human minds have resulted in the journey
to the moon and are still exploring various other planets in future.
Astronauts are the individuals who have to travel from gravity to microgravity
& back to gravity. Microgravity is an environment in which body experience
less or no gravitational force. Gravity has major influence on musculoskeletal,
neuro-vestibular, cardiovascular and pulmonary systems.
Cardiovascular system:
Orthostatic hypotension
Pulmonary system:
Alimentary system:
Nervous system:
Ataxia
Motion sickness
Reproductive system:
Urinary system:
Renal calculi
Balance loss
Psychological factors:
Alzheimer’s disease
Manic depression
Schizophrenia
Management:
Medical managements:
Sleep cap
Physiotherapy management:
Aim :
To improve endurance
Pre-flight phase:
Motor fitness
Double raises
Cardiovascular fitness
In-flight phase:
Post-flight phase:
Tilt table
Treadmill
Anti-gravity treadmill
CEVIS {cycle ergo meter with vibration isolation &
stabilization system}
Weight lifting
CONCLUSION:
Bone demineralization
Muscle atrophy
Circulatory problems
Respiratory complications
