Bottles
Like other Christian
communities across Indonesia,
the Roman Catholics who
worship at the diocese of the
Holy Spirit at the Cathedral in
Denpasar have erected a
Christmas tree as part of their
yuletide celebration.
But, as reported by

Christmas Tree standing at the
Cathedral this year is truly
unique. The tree is comprised
of 8,000 plastic bottles
salvaged from trash barrels.
Bebiana Marseling, the
coordinator of the Christmas
Decoration Section for
Christmas 2018 at the
Cathedral explains that the idea
for a tree made of discarded
plastic bottles came from a
desire to reduce plastic trash in
Denpasar.
“We know that empty plastic
mineral water bottles are
thrown away and never used
again. After we coordinated
with several artists, we resolved
to collect empty mineral water
bottles in order to become a

collected bottle from members
of the decoration sections. But
once we had a design in hand,
we realized we needed many
more bottles. Eventually we
sought bottles from other
groups and the local community
– everyone chipped in,”

Bebiana said more than 8,000
bottles were used in creating
the tree, all collected by
members of the church parish
who became more aware of the
need to reduce plastic trash in
the process.

cost nothing, some Rp. 13
million was spent on building
the tree, including creating a
metal frame to contain and hold
the 8,000 empty bottles.

Also of importance is the fact the

results of an investigation showing
malfeasance and corruption in the

Rai Toll road.
The Toll road has been in operation for

Karya have been named as suspects
by KPK for acts committed during the
