1. Introduction

1.1 Project Overview:-

 A High Octane Bicycle is a bicycle with an attached engine and transmission used either
to power the vehicle unassisted, or to assist with pedaling. Since it always retains both
pedals and a discrete connected drive for rider-powered propulsion, the motorized bicycle
is in technical terms a true bicycle.
 Our project is based or derived from standard general-purpose bicycle frame designs and
technologies, although exceptions abound. In addition, modifications to a standard
bicycle frame to support motorization may be extensive.

1.2 Aims &Objective:-

 When you ride your bicycle in traffic, one of the biggest sources of anxiety is stopping
and starting again and again – ie, going from a complete stop to the speed of traffic. This
can take a lot of energy. The high octane bicycle could be a great assist, getting you from
0 to the speed of traffic quickly, meaning you don’t need to worry about holding up the
people that are behind you.
 A steep incline, a nightmare that is known to cyclists everywhere. It’s a huge bother to
the cyclists everywhere. I’ll bet at least once you’ve climbed a hill on your bicycle, only
to stop at the top to catch your breath. However, if you were to have a high octane
bicycle, that hill would not be any problem at all. In fact, one of the biggest selling
points for high octane bicycles would be their hill-climbing capabilities.
 Sometimes you just feel so tired, even when usually cycling isn’t a particularly tiresome
activity. There’s just something about it that drains you. Well, fear no more. A motorized
bike definitely makes up for what you lack in physical energy.
 Owning a car, especially for a middle class family is costly. The routine maintenance of
a car can cost a lot. Also, if there’s a problem with your car, it often costs thousands of
rupees to cover the repairs Bicycle repairs, on the other hand, are much cheaper. While
it’s true that the engine repairs can be costly, it’s still cheaper than fixing a car if its
engine fails.
 It’s not just fixing the car that’s costly; it’s getting one in the first place. Bicycles
generally cost a lot less than a car. Hence a high octane bicycle is a way better option
compared to a car.
 The high octane bicycle is fuel efficient. In other words its fuel lasts for a fair bit of time.
 The High Octane Bicycle aims to be economical and one of the popular product in the
market.
1.3 Scope:-
 High octane bicycles would be developed both as complete designs and as add-on motor
kits for use on standard bicycles, either by part-time hobbyists or by commercial
manufacturers.
 In order to having easy modification it could also be used in handicapped motorcycles.
 It has a user friendly design and economical, so middle class man can afford it.
 It is also environment friendly.

1.4 Materials/Tools Required:-

 A bicycle having a V-shape frame

 2 stroke 40cc engine
 Sprocket holder
 44 teeth Sprocket with 9 holes
 Chain drive
 Fuel tank
 Clutch /accelerator wires
 Accelerator handle
 Kill switch (optional)
 Universal clamp
 bolts and nuts screws
 Idler puller for tension on the chain
 Tie strips
 Drilling machine
 Carburetor
 Exhaust muffler system
 Cutters and Spanners
 Springs
 Clutch lever
1.5 Literature Review:-
 Motorized bicycles have utilized different types of engines from internal-combustion (IC
two stroke and four stroke gasoline engines to electric, diesel, or even steam propulsion.
Most of the motorized bicycles are based or derived from standard general-purpose
bicycle frame designs and technologies, although exceptions abound.
 The earliest type of motorized bicycles was ordinary utility bicycles fitted with an add-on
motor as well as transmission to assist normal pedal propulsion, and that principally
distinguishes the motorized bicycle from a moped or motorbike.
 In a day when gasoline engine and transmission designs were in their infancy, and
power-to-weight ratios used to be low, a dual-purpose propulsion system seemed
rightfully advantageous.
 As time passed, pedal propulsion was increasingly replaced by constant use of a two or
four-stroke petrol engine. However, the concept of using motor assisted bicycle has
persisted, and the concept has periodically resurfaced over the past years.
 1868 – The first steam driven two wheeled vehicle is the Michaux-Perreaux steam
velocipede that was created in France. The Michaux-Perreaux steam velocipede was
a velocipede powered by steam made in France during 1867 to 1871, when a small Louis-
Guillaume Perreaux commercial steam engine was connected to a Pierre Michaux
manufactured iron framed pedal bicycle. It is one of three motorbikes claimed to be the
first motorbike, along with the Roper steam velocipede of 1867 or 1868, and the IC
engine Daimler Reitwagen of 1885.
 1919 – Johnson Motor Wheel
 Johnson motor wheel was a kit used to convert a bicycle into a motorized bicycle. It was
manufactured by an American company, Johnson Brothers Motor Company located in
Terre Haute, Indian. The Johnson Motor Wheel had a 2 cycle engine which created 1HP
and had two flywheel magnetos, bronze bearings and a float feed carburettor with it. The
complete kit was provided with a wheel, hub tire, shock-absorbing spring sprocket
holder, wheel sprocket and chain, handlebar controls for choke, throttle and engine
shutoff, three quart gas tank and gas line, and all necessary components to adapt the
engine and rear wheel unit to any 26" bicycle.

CONCLUSION OF LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1Qualities Of A Good Design

A good product design should satisfy the expectations of the customer/user. These can be
summarized in the following conditions. The product must

 Carry out the desired functions reliably.

 Appeal both technologically and psychologically.

 Be economical to acquire and to use.

 Be easy and safe to use.

 Be easy to maintain in working order.

In order to ensure the conditions, not only must the design concept be novel and sound but the
design must be well engineered. This engineering part of design consists of

 Drawing up the main parameters for function and performance.

 Deciding the material, shape and dimensions of the components.

 Ensuring that the component dimensions satisfy the functional and strength requirement.

 Ensuring the feasibility to manufacture or otherwise procure all the necessary

components, assemble them together and test them.

 Preparing the component and assembly drawing for guiding manufacture and inspection.
2.2 Introduction to design

Bicycle Requirements:

This bicycle motor engine fits most Men’s 24" and larger bicycles which includes mountain,
cruiser, chopper and road bikes with a V-frame with at least a 8.5" height clearance for the
engine. Larger frame size requires drilling into bike frame and use of the universal face plate.

Dimensions:

This 40cc bicycle motor engine is about 5.5" height 7" length 5" width and fits on most standard
24” – 26” or 25mm 29mm frame bicycle frame tubes. Larger frame size requires drilling into
bike frame and use the universal face plate. This engine & addons only adds about 12 lbs to your
bike.

2.3 Specification of Design of main body

 First our main concern was the placement of the engine , these includes the placement of
the engine at the back carrier or in the middle of the v frame.

 Both idea looked feasible but the second idea of placing the engine at the Centre of the v-
frame looked more appropriate considering the factors involving Centre of gravity and
stability of the structure.

 Secondly the design involved the chain sprocket structure , now placing the sprocket on
both sides is done clamping through the sprocket holder through nuts and bolts.

 The additional sprocket which was installed has a 44teeth and 9 holes considering the
best efficiency and gear ratio which gives best efficiency and torque.

 Now the accelerator handle can be installed with the help of drilling holes on the handle
and extending wire attached to the engine .

 Also the engine is clamped in the V-frame with the help of Universal clamp.

 Now to adjust tension the tension on the newly installed chain on the other side i.e. which
is connected to the engine; an idler pulley is used.

 Also an additional kill switch can be installed to turn off the engine .

 The mechanism is such that the bicycle can be used through pedaling also as well as with
the aid on engine.

3.Conclusion and Future works

Summary of the works

 In the first half we focused on the literature work , generally we focused on the problems
involving the bicycle and inventions till date.
 Then we read a number of literature reviews and analysed on what is persisting and what
problems are being faces related to the cycle.
 Then we listed out all the possible solution involving the current persisting problems
 Finally we came out with a possible solution and our main topic “High Octane Bicycle”
which involved installing an engine into the bicycle.
 Following that we need to sort out the design part of our project and analyse it in more
detail.
 Finally we came out we a possible design which involved placement of engine and
sprocket design along with it the type of bicycle needed etc.
 Then we focused on the assembly related part i.e. how to assemble the parts and specified
the requirement of the parts as well.
 Moreover we read several patents involving our topic related information and seeked help
of our faculty guide.

Future works
 This will be involving operations related to all the fabrication and physical assembly
parts.
 Main concern would be fitting the engine on the v-frame.
 Also we would be working on all the manufacturing related operations to be included.
 Smooth operation and improving our efficiency would be our main concern.
 Making the vehicle as light as possible also would be our main concern.
 Also we would be working on making the engine detachable from the main frame.
Advantages Related To Our Work
 When you ride your bicycle in traffic, one of the biggest sources of anxiety is stopping
and starting again and again – i.e. going from a complete stop to the speed of traffic.
This can take a lot of energy. The high octane bicycle could be a great assist, getting you

the people that are behind you.
 A steep incline, a nightmare that is known to cyclists everywhere. It’s a huge bother to
the cyclists everywhere. I’ll bet at least once you’ve climbed a hill on your bicycle, only
to stop at the top to catch your breath. However, if you were to have a high octane

bike definitely makes up for what you lack in physical energy.
 Owning a car, especially for a middle class family is costly. The routine maintenance of
a car can cost a lot. Also, if there’s a problem with your car, it often costs thousands of
rupees to cover the repairs Bicycle repairs, on the other hand, are much cheaper. While
it’s true that the engine repairs can be costly, it’s still cheaper than fixing a car if its

compared to a car.
 The high octane bicycle is fuel efficient. In other words its fuel lasts for a fair bit of time.
 The High Octane Bicycle aims to be economical and one of the popular product in the
market.
 Also it can be installed in handicapped bicycle to reduce the strain in moving pedal
through hand.
 Also it can be beneficial for the Rickshaw cycle walas to carry loads.
Conclusions

The octane bicycle uses 40 cc two stroke engine with chain drive transmissions .Two stroke
engines do not consist of valves which simplifies their construction and lowers their weight. Two
stroke engine fires once every revolution, hence it gives the two stroke engine a power boost.
These advantages of the high octane bicycle make them lighter, simpler and less expensive to
manufacture. Also the high octane bicycle has the potential to tank twice the power into the same
space as there are twice as many power strokes per revolution in its engine.
The driving mechanism is installed in a frame manifold node and it mainly comprises of a motor
driving transmission device, a front driving sprocket and a pedal driving transmission device.
The concept of using two stroke engine will successfully replace the concept of pedal
propulsion particularly in times of austerity or fuel shortages. In countries where automobiles and/or
fuels are prohibitively expensive, the high octane bicycle will enjoy popularity as a primary mode of
transportation.
Thus a good alternative to bikes and cars and can be easily available and affordable to common man.
