SUMMARIES:

CHAPTER 1

Marcus is a 12-year-old boy who does not understand why his mother separated from Roger,
one of his boyfriends. Even though his mother told him some reason about his separation, he
could not understand at all. They ordered a pizza and talked about it while she kept thinking in
Roger. She did not know how to explain it to her son, and Marcus did not want to remind her
of her finished relationship.

CHAPTER 2

Start talking about Will, describing him like the coolest person in the world. Will is 36 years old
He could do whatever he wants. He gains a lot of money doing literally anything because of his
father (not saying why). Will begin going out with girls, and one was named Christine. They
maintain their communication but now Christine has a new couple, and two children. Then
Will went out with Jessica, but it was just a short relation because Jessica wanted something
more serious.

CHAPTER 3

In this chapter he did not want to go at school, but he accept it because her mother would
work in a better job, then he feel so rare and he was wondering how to know when people is
angry and he realized how does he express that during the class.

CHAPTER 4

In this part of the story Will freeman knows to Angie in an interesting situation where he get
an appointment and the number of her cell-phone for a future dinner. In the next meeting
Angie told to Will that she had sons in consequence Will wanted to throw all away, but he
realized that having sons is not a really bad decisions and after the meeting Will’s behavior
became more friendly and Angie loved it, she present him her sons and he loved her in spite of
go away, but the last dinner was going on something rare, because she broke the relationship
for other man and he understand that there are a lot of girls like Angie in every street of
London waiting for fun.

CHAPTER 5

Marcus’ mother woke up in a rarely way, she was crying, and it was a bad sign during the day.
Marcus tried to help her guessing what she was saying, and he felt happy. It was a silent
environment when Marcus left their house saying anything. He wondered why his mother was
in that terrible behavior because they have enough money to live regularly.

CHAPTER 6

This chapter begging showing us that Will tries to be a single father, that´s because he wants to
join the SPAT group to meet women like Angie, he was really captivated about her. Then he
knows Suzie who impressed him too, but as he knows that if he don’t have a child he couldn’t
join to the group, he decided to invent “his son”, called Ned.

CHAPTER 7

Marcus likes to pass time at his father’s house in Cambridge, and he goes shopping there. At
that shop Marcus notice that some bad boys from his school are there trying to put sweets and
other things on his pocket. Mr. Patel think that Marcus tried to steal those things and almost
punish him, but luckily Mr. Patel realized the theft and look to the bad boys. Marcus go to his
house out.

CHAPTER 8

Will knows Marcus when he was with Suzie in Regent’s Park. He thinks that Marcus is really
weird and treat him a little bad. While they are in the park Will forgot “his son”, Marcus is
feeding to a duck, but as the animal doesn’t want to eat Marcus kill it. Also in this chapter
appear Megan.

CHAPTER 9

Marcus is shocking because of the duck’s death, and a parkkeeper appears to punish him for
his killing. In that moment arrives Will who defends Marcus. After that they bring Marcus to his
home. There they find Fiona lying in the sofa, she looks really ill. She tried to kill herself. Will
calls the ambulance. Suzie is very angry at Fiona because she has a child, but on the other hand
she is also afraid of a life threatening situation.

CHAPTER 10

Will, Suzie and Marcus are in the hospital where Will try to make Marcus happy. Will changes
his behavior with Marcus in a friendly way because he feels pity of Marcus. Then Suzie wants
to know the name of the Will’s ex-wife but he didn’t have anyone. He invents a name, Paula.

CHAPTER 11

When Marcus gets to his home, he finds a farewell “Abschiedsbrief” written by Fiona. This day
just happened in that way. Suzie comes to bring Marcus’ mom back home. Then Marcus feels
very rare and strange because he knows that his mother has health diseases, and in that way
he decided not to argue with her. She could have a normal evening.

CHAPTER 12

Suzie notices that Marcus looks lonely, and she decided to told it to Will. Will decided to
support Marcus, that’s why he bought a magazine to find out what he can do with Marcus
when he is there. Will calls Marcus in the afternoon. Will asked him for some activities to do,
but Marcus only wants to if he can take his mother with them. Will accepts that.

CHAPTER 13

Marcus wants to go to Planet Hollywood because he has heard that you can meet sometimes
meet celebrities there. But they have to wait a really long time so Fiona and Will decide to go
to another restaurant. At the restaurant which Will has recommended Fiona and Marcus tell
him that they are vegetarians. Will can't understand this. He also can't find anything good at
Fiona so it's a terrible afternoon for them.

CHAPTER 14

Will visits Marcus and Fiona for the first time. But now he really knows that Fiona absolutely is
not his type. At home Marcus and Fiona are singing "Killing me softly" at the piano with eyes
closed what makes Will feeling sick. Later that week Marcus visits Will and they spent an
afternoon together. That's why Marcus knows now that Will doesn't have a child but he
doesn't really care about it.
CHAPTER 15

In this chapter Marcus’ and Will’s relationship starts to grow to almost a friendship. Marcus
starts to visit Will every day for weeks after school and they talk about Marcus’ problems in
school and at home (the suicide attempt).

CHAPTER 16

Will almost like Marcus' visits. One day Marcus ran away from some bad guys from school and
comes to Will's flat to be secured. That day Will recognizes that Marcus is a really poor kid with
no friends and no luck so Will and Marcus go out shopping. Will wants to buy Marcus cool, but
expensive shoes. Marcus doesn't want this but at least Will can convince him. The day after
Marcus visits Will again after school, but without the cool boots. The kids in school had stolen
them.

CHAPTER 17

Fiona is actually mad at Marcus because she does not know about his visits to Will's room. But
she is also angry with Will because he believes he is excessively friendly with Marcus because
he wants to abuse him. That's why they start a real true altercation. Soon Fiona and Marcus
also have a fight. Fiona does not like Marcus to make decisions without first asking him.

CHAPTER 18

Will listens to his father's song first time this year. He hates this song although he earns money
with it. Fiona calls him in the afternoon. She thinks that Will already take part in Marcus' life
because he chooses him as his personal role model. So they decide to have a meeting to talk
about the whole situation about Marcus and Will. Will doesn't really like Fiona, she seems too
weird to him. Fiona doesn't want Marcus at Will's place because she doesn't really like him,
too.

CHAPTER 19

Fiona forbids Marcus to visit Will but he won't obey her. At school Marcus has to talk with the
headmistress Mrs. Morrison about his shoes. At the headmistresses office he meets Ellie
McCrae, a really rebellious girl at his school. They had a real weird conversation and Ellie
makes jokes about Marcus because he doesn't know who Kurt Cobain is. Mrs. Morrison
doesn't really help Marcus; she only gives him finger tips to get out of the way of the shoe
thieves. That makes Marcus really angry so he goes away from school.

CHAPTER 20

Will sees Marcus walking down Upper Street although he should be in school. In the afternoon
Marcus comes to Will's flat again. At first Will doesn't want to answer the door but then he
opens it. Marcus tells Will about the story with Ellie and asks him who "Kirk O'Bane is and Will
explains him everything. Will sees now that he should teach Marcus how to be a real kid.

CHAPTER 21

At school Marcus talks to Ellie again and he sees that she is nice to him. Elli and her friend Zoe
think that Marcus is really funny. That's why Ellie takes Marcus to the older pupils form room.
On the way to get there a teacher stops them because he thinks maybe Ellie wants to hurt
Marcus but she tells him that she has adopted Marcus.
CHAPTER 22

Marcus invites Will to spend Christmas with them, at first Will doesn't want to because he
thinks Suzie is mad about him but then he says yes. He thinks that they have a strange kind of
Christmas and is wondering about why Fiona and Clive can be nice to each other although they
have nothing in common any more than Marcus. Will gives Marcus the "Never mind" LP by
Nirvana, which makes Marcus really happy.

CHAPTER 23

Fiona and Clive have a serious discussion about Clive's joint and that he always takes drugs in
front of their son. Then Suzie and Megan arrive for a drink and a chat. Marcus is angry about
the others behavior towards Will because they aren't really nice to him. Suzie is angry about
him because she always thinks that he's a real single father. But Marcus tells them that they
have to be nice to Will because Will is his friend.

CHAPTER 24

Will meets Rachel first time at the New Year's Eve Party. He really thinks she's nice. Later that
evening they are kissing each other and find out that "both" have a twelve year old son,
because Will doesn't tell her that Marcus isn't his son. Alistair, Rachel's son, is also Nirvana fan.
Rachel and Will want to meet each other again together with their "boys". Will also tells Rachel
that Fiona is his ex, so Rachel thinks she has met the perfect single father to fit.

CHAPTER 25

Marcus is at Suzie's New Year's Party and Ellie is there, too. Marcus now sees that 1993 is not
the best year he ever had. Marcus worries also a little bit about Fiona, because people like her,
that means such unhappy people, often kill themselves at such days. Because of that Marcus
and Ellie have an interesting conversation about parents, suicide attempts and their roles in
society. Marcus wants to dance with Ellie but for her there's nothing more embarrassing than
dancing. Later Ellie and Marcus catch Ellie's mum kissing Tim Porter in the garden.

CHAPTER 26

Marcus and Will go to the mall and Will tells him about Rachel. But Marcus doesn't understand
why Will told her, that he is his son. Furthermore Will had to admit, that he has been in love
with Rachel since New Year's Eve. Marcus is not sure, if he wants Elli as his girlfriend. Will
persuades Marcus to pretend to be his son (they were invited on Saturday to lunch with
Rachel). Will thinks, that he loves Marcus at the moment when Marcus remained in Ali’s room
but after 10 minutes Marcus left Ali’s room.

CHAPTER 27

Will thinks that it is not good that Marcus is defended by Elli. Will is going to eat with Rachel
and he told her, that Marcus isn't his son. Will told Rachel about the relationship with Marcus.
Will says that he didn't say that Marcus was his son. Rachel blames herself. Rachel says the
fact, that he has a son makes him interesting. Will learned to take over responsibility.

CHAPTER 28

Will thinks that it is not good that Marcus is defended by Elli. Will is going to eat with Rachel
and he told her, that Marcus isn't his son. Will told Rachel about the relationship with Marcus.
Will says that he didn't say that Marcus was his son. Rachel blames herself. Rachel says the
fact, that he has a son makes him interesting. Will learned to take over responsibility.

CHAPTER 29

Some weeks passed by and Marcus felt like he was changing in his body and in his head. But
then his mother started crying again. He asked Will to help him, but Will didn't feel able to help
him in any way in such things. At school Ellie is sad because of Kurt Cobain’s suicide attempt.
Marcus cannot understand Ellie’s feelings and behavior, because Ellie didn't even know this
person and in his mind Kurt Cobain isn't a real person. But his mother is a real person with real
problems and these problems are so much more important.

CHAPTER 30

Will showed feelings of remorse and a bad mood because he didn't wanted to help Marcus
although there were so many arguments to get involved, to look after Marcus and to help him.
He thought about his relationship with Rachel. A little later they finally had sex for the first
time. Rachel explained to Will why Fiona is so depressed and she wanted to talk with her about
this problem.

CHAPTER 31

Marcus' dad broke his collarbone. Fiona wanted Marcus to visit his dad but Marcus didn't have
any compassion for his dad. He just didn't want to go and he was angry with him because
before he had this accident he never cared about Marcus. He told Ellie about this and she
promised to come with him. The day they wanted to leave, Kurt Cobain killed himself. Marcus
tried to hide this news from Ellie, but she knew it already.

CHAPTER 32

Will wants to meet Fiona and Rachel, though he is disappointed when he hears that Rachel
won´t be there. Fiona needs somebody to talk to and she´s happy she can tell Will about her
problems. He, however, doesn´t feel like it and thinks he’s not the right person for that. When
they arrive at Fiona’s home, they are told that Marcus and Ellie are at a police station.

CHAPTER 33

Marcus and Ellie are heading towards Marcus´s father, while they are talking about Ellie´s life
and past. When they reach Royston Station, Ellie hops on a still driving train; Marcus follows
her. From there, she destroys shop windows by throwing her shoes because she doesn´t like
how other people are earning money with the death of Kurt Cobain. The police stop them red-
handed and take them to a police station.

CHAPTER 34

Rachel, Fiona, Will and Katrina (who is Ellie’s mother) fetch Ellie and Marcus from the police
station. They talk about Ellie and their behavior and Katrina thinks she has gone out of control.
Ruth, owner of a record shop, overhears the conversation and explains to them that Ellie is a
fan of Kurt Cobain and that she feels the same as Ellie.

CHAPTER 35

Marcus drove it to his father, and he realized that his father doesn’t play a role in his life and
he had missed his chance. At home, Lindsey went to sleep and Marcus stays with his father in
the kitchen. He tries to explain to his son why he has seen since the accident that Marcus
needs him as a father. Marcus thinks he does not need a father, because he has a lot of people
around him and was confident and he also knew how he had to deal with people and their
problems. The next morning Marcus drove back home.

CHAPTER 36

Most Saturdays Will has done something together with Marcus and Ali, first of all in order to
get a chance in Rachel's life and to have a good chance with her. Marcus became even more
adult than Al. He dressed himself better, and went to the barber and had not bothered to sing
out loud and even improved his friendship with Elli and Zoe. He had learned to behave like a
teenager and Will missed this old Marcus. Fiona and Rachel understand each other better now,
they meet regularly and even Will toyed with the idea to marry Rachel. Ali and Marcus don't
like the idea, because they believed that this would not hold long. Fiona feared losing Marcus
because Marcus was doing just what he wanted. It seemed to work well.
