Discussion

Distilled water has the greatest pH value among the three. From the results, there is quite a high

pH value in distilled water because of the presence of CO2 gas in the environment which permits

the alkalinity of the distilled water to increase. By comparison, pH of waste water is the least

followed by that of tap water which is obviously that both samples have been polluted. Tap water

has a higher alkalinity than waste water because of the existence of chloride ions in water

treatment areas.

Additionally, we obtained the alkalinity for the samples. Waste water had alkalinity of 340 mg/L

CaCO3, distilled water had alkalinity of 5 mg/L CaCO3, while tap water had alkalinity of 200

mg/L CaCO3. Alkalinity is higher in waste water and tap water as compared to distilled water

because distilled water has less mineral content or organic content. Waste water has higher

mineral or organic content than tap water.

The value of turbidity of waste water is much higher than in distilled and tap water. There is a

connection between the amount of suspended solids and turbidity because of the fact that the

greater the amount suspended solids in the water, the clearer it appears and the hence the

measured turbidity becomes higher. Therefore, waster water is not clear.

Presence of CaCO3 affect the water hardness. Waste and tap water have the highest hardness

while distilled water is soft. The presence of CaCO3 make hard water to have a high-buffering

capacity to resist pH changes.
