1.The Elephant Rope
As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge
creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was
obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason,
they did not.
He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to
get away. “Well,” trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same
size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are
conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so
they never try to break free.”
The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because
they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.
Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do
something, simply because we failed at it once before?
People visit a wise man complaining about the same problems over and over again.
One day, he decided to tell them a joke and they all roared with laughter.
After a few minutes, he told them the same joke and only a few of them smiled.
Then he told the same joke for a third time, but no one laughed or smiled
anymore.
The wise man smiled and said: “You can’t laugh at the same joke over and over. So
why are you always crying about the same problem?”
Moral of the story: Worrying won’t solve your problems, it’ll just waste your time
and energy.
3. Non-judgment
Once upon the time there was an old farmer who had worked his
crops for many years. One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing
the news, his neighbors came to visit. “Such bad luck,” they said
sympathetically.
There's always tomorrow. And whether the day was good or bad, there are a
million effects which can arise from one event. Good and bad are
interconnected. They are, in fact, two sides of the same coin. If things seem
perfect, they aren't. If it seems like it's Armageddon in your corner of the
world, it's not. Things can change in an instant, at all times. And they will at
some point or another.
This doesn't mean that we can't be happy. On the contrary, it means that we
need to realize this truth and live in a way that we're constantly aware of it in
order to find peace and happiness. Don't let this change the way you live too
much just yet, though. For now, just think on it, observe your life through the
lens of this infinitely co-arising universe. This act in itself can bring you a
great sense of peace.
