GLOSSARY
Hub: The hub of a torque converter is the part that is inserted into the transmission, through the front seal and pump bushing or locates
on the stator support, with the input shaft and stator support being splined into the torque converter through the open center of the hub.
The hub in the pump bushing or the hub bushing on the stator support locates the torque converter to the transmission.
Pilot: The pilot of a torque converter is a centering device on the engine side of the torque converter that fits into an opening in the
crankshaft of the engine to locate and center the torque converter.
Lugs, pads or studs: The mounting devices of the torque converter that attaches it to the flex-plate or flywheel by means of bolts or
nuts. The lugs, pads or studs of the torque converter are not used to center the converter to the engine, they are used to "drive" the
torque converter.
Overall height: Overall height of a torque converter is measured from the area of the mounting lug or stud that makes contact with the
flex-plate or flywheel to the end of the pump-drive hub that goes into the transmission. Sit the converter on its hub on a flat surface.
Measure from the flat surface to the lug or stud area that contacts the flex-plate. This measurement is overall height.
Stall speed: The stall speed of a torque converter is usually determined, in a particular vehicle, by placing the transmission in a forward
gear range, apply the brakes, depress the throttle until the engine can no longer increase RPM or the brakes can no longer hold the
vehicle. This test should not be continued for more than 5 to 10 seconds. Over-heating can occur. The RPM developed by the
engine is considered the stall of the torque converter in the application. If the brakes cannot hold the vehicle from moving, the test is
not valid. Many factors play a part in this test including the torque and condition of the engine.
K-Factor: The K-factor of a torque converter is derived by dividing the square root of the engine torque by the stall speed. The known
K-factor of a specific torque converter can be used with engine torque to determine the stall speed of the torque converter in an
application.
Stall Torque Ratio: STR is the ability of the torque converter to multiply the torque of the engine in a vehicle. STR's are normally 1.68:1
to 2.1:1. The multiplication is at its greatest at the instant throttle is applied, before the vehicle wheels begin movement. The STR is
a ratio that decreases as vehicle speed increases and becomes 1:1 at or about the application of 3rd gear (direct drive) in most
transmissions. Many vehicles with converter clutch systems are very sensitive to changes in the STR of the torque converter.
Torque Converter Efficiency: Torque converters are normally 90 to 96 percent efficient. If the engine of the vehicle develops 2000
RPM, the torque converter will loose approximately 100-200 RPM. Torque converter clutch systems are designed to regain all or most of
this efficiency loss. Fluid couplings, not known as torque converters, did not multiply the torque of the engine to assist in take-off power
and were usually about 80 percent efficient.

"OVERALL HEIGHT"
“Overall Height” is the measurement from the area of the mounting pad, mounting ring or
mounting stud pad that rests against the flex-plate to the top of the converter pump.
Turn the converter hub down on a flat surface and measure from the flat surface to the
top of the mounting pad. Do not measure to the end of the pilot. The pilot length is not
considered part of the “Overall Height”.
"STATOR SPLINES" The “Stator Splines” are the first set of splines in the torque converter. Many converters in
the “Foreign” category will look the same externally but will have different stators.
"TURBINE SPLINES" The “Turbine Splines” are the second set of splines in most torque converters. Many convert-
ers will look the same externally but will have different turbines. The vehicle will not move if
the wrong turbine spline count is used. In some situations, if the wrong turbine spline count
is used, severe transmission damage will occur.
Always install 4 to 6 ounces of fluid in the torque converter before installation. Dry start-up can
damage bearings, bushings, thrust washers, clutches and other internal components of the converter.
Always inspect the dowel pins in the engine and the dowel pin holes in the transmission case.
Push the converter into the transmission and measure the distance between the flex-plate and the
mounting pad of the converter. This distance should be at least 1/8” and not more than 1/4”.
Install shims between the mounting pads and flex-plate if necessary to achieve the correct
measurement.
Caution: Make sure that the converter pilot has not been pulled out of the crankshaft with
excessive shims.

The following pages are devoted to the introduction of clutch type torque converters as
used by General Motors in passenger cars and trucks since 1980.
Certain criteria must be dealt with to insure proper identification of the clutch type
converters other than simple "looks like" identification. Stall speed, clutch type, stall
torque ratio, dampening spring rate, and mounting lug type and style must be
considered as well as the transmission that will receive the converter. Do not forget the
axle ratio or final-drive. Read the code from the converter I.D. tag and match to that
code from the charts and replace the torque converter with the same code.
YEAR YEAR MAKE MODEL ENGINE CODES TRANSMISSION CONVERTER DACCO PART NUMBER
K-Factor and determined stall are calculated with an input torque of 135.58NM. A change of input torque
will increase or decrease determined stall speed. For example, the FM8C coded converter will stall at
approximately 1525 RPM with the 4.1L V-8 and at approximately 1825 RPM with the 4.5L.
Another factor in this particular type of torque converter from General Motors that is just as important to the
drive-ability of the vehicle is the STALL TORQUE RATIO or STR of the torque converter. The STR is the
ability of the converter to multiply the torque of the engine as delivered to the converter.
Therefore: DO NOT INTERCHANGE ANY CONVERTER WITH A DIFFERENT 2nd DIGIT CODE. THE STR IS
MATCHED TO ENGINE TORQUE, VEHICLE SIZE, FINAL DRIVE, SPROCKET RATIOS AND DRIVE-ABILITY
CHARACTERISTICS NOT JUST TO COMPUTER SIGNALS AND "READS".
Identification: Read the original code tag on the torque converter or the metal stamp on the converter
body to establish stall speed.
Codes: The code sticker will identify the transmission type that the converter fits, the stall speed, the type
of clutch and damper assembly as well as spring rate, and the type of mounting lugs on the cover.
The metal stamp found between two of the "dimples" on the converter body was the early system
used to identify the angle of the impeller blades. Some early units do not have this metal stamp
and identification by "dimple" angle and engine application must be used for correct application.

This is the standard identification code system as used by General Motors. DACCO Converters will continue to use a simplified
version of this code system. Converters with poppet valves for Diesel Engines will be numbered :

Vehicles that require a specific stall speed or damper plate such as CADILLAC with static-open poppet valves and 1996-up
vehicles with Carbon Filled or Woven Graphite clutch material will be identified with the entire 4-digit code, CF9C etc...
(Note: Units with Carbon Filled or Woven Graphite clutch material should be replaced with the same code.)
1st Digit will be the same as the 2nd Digit tells the stall speed of the converter

The TC-6 and TC-8 torque converters followed the Chrysler torque converters as lock-up units
and have now followed as A-500 and A-518 units in 1989.
The 1989 through 1991 A-500 and A-518 lock-up and non-lock-up torque converters are
the same as used in A-904 and A-727 non-lock-up and lock-up transmissions. To begin your
identification, follow these simple guidelines.
B. Identify the stall of the converter by the color of the label that is attached to the top of the
converter. Most 1992 and later converters are of the high stall variation.
C. Check the mounting pads and look at all 1996 units for the 90 degree symbol on the cover.
These torque converters will not inter-change with or be inter-changed by earlier units. The
bolt pattern is different and does not have an "off-set" mounting pad.
D. 1992-1995 torque converters for the 5.9 Liter engine (360) use a square un-balance weight.
The earlier butterfly weight will not fit the flex-plate.
E. 1996-up torque converters for the 5.9Liter engine (360) use no un-balance weight and have
the 90 degree bolt pattern. The un-balance weight is on the flex-plate.
F. In 1992 Chrysler starts the use of a thrust bearing under the impeller hub and on top of the
converter stator . This location had previously used a hardened thrust washer. Stall speed
and K-factors will change along with the use of stamped numbers on the torque converter
as a means of identification.
G. Look for the three digit number stamped on the transmission side of the torque converter
as an identification number. Dacco part numbers will be the same as this number.
Some of these variations of torque converters will be used for one year only. Others will
be used for three or more years.
*** Note: After the torque converter has been rebuilt, the stamped number is no longer valid. ***
Application and part number identification will not be easy and may be confusing. For additional
information contact your DACCO sales representative or parts supplier.

LIMITED WARRANTY
DACCO, Incorporated ("DACCO") warrants to its direct customers only that each torque converter ("Product") remanufactured or sold by DACCO
will be free from defects in material and workmanship under normal and proper use and service for a period of three years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs
first, but shall not exceed the warranty period of the rebuilder or remanufacturer of the complete transmission. DACCO's sole obligation under this Warranty
shall be to repair or replace, at its option, the defective Product at no charge to the customer. Under no circumstances shall DACCO be liable for any oil,
towing, labor or rental vehicle charges. As a condition to this Warranty, the customer must return any allegedly defective Product, freight prepaid, to DACCO
at 741 DACCO Drive, Cookeville, TN 38506, accompanied by a packing slip indicating the shipper and the invoice number when originally invoiced.
This Limited Warranty does not apply to unsatisfactory Product performance which is attributable, in whole or in part, to any factor, condition or circumstance
other than defects in material or workmanship of the Product. Because DACCO provides a component product only and does not rebuild or remanufacture
complete transmissions, this warranty coverage is not extended to any party other than DACCO's direct customers ("DACCO customers"). Accordingly,
no claims may be made hereunder by any parties who purchase items from DACCO customers even if such items purchased include a "Product",
produced by DACCO. Without limiting the foregoing, this Limited Warranty shall be null and void if repair or replacement is required because of improper
installation, accident, physical or electrical stress, neglect, misuse or any other cause other than the ordinary and intended use for which the Product was designed,
or if the Product has been dismantled, altered or repaired by the customer or any third party.
EXCEPT FOR THE EXPRESS LIMITED WARRANTY SET FORTH ABOVE, DACCO MAKES NO OTHER REPRESENTATION OR
