Control Programs that Run at startup

Control Programs That Run at Startup

The best way to prevent a program from running at Startup, is to

check the program's own options for a way to prevent this. Most
good quality programs will provide an option for this.

If you can't find the option there, click Start, Run and enter
MSCONFIG. Go to the Startup tab, and uncheck the item there.
This method is not always 100% successful. An example is a
program that you do use, but you don't want running
automatically. Some programs will check to see if the program's
own options say it should run at Startup. If the program thinks
its supposed to load at startup, it will re-create the autorun entry.

Remove the Shared Documents folders from My Computer

One of the most annoying things about the new Windows XP user
interface is that Microsoft saw fit to provide links to all of the
Shared Documents folders on your system, right at the top of the
My Computer window.

Simply go to run type 'regedit' and navigate to the following

key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \
Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ My Computer \
NameSpace \ DelegateFolders

You'll see a sub-key named {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-

5595fe6b30ee}.

If you delete this, all of the Shared Documents folders (which are
normally under the group called "Other Files Stored on This
Computer") will be gone.
You do not need to reboot your system to see the change.

What is a cookie?

A cookie is a very small text file placed on your hard drive by a

Web Page server. It is essentially your identification card, and
cannot be executed as code or deliver viruses. It is uniquely yours
and can only be read by the server that gave it to you.A Cookie's
Purpose is to tell the server that you've returned to that Web
page. It can save you time. If you personalize pages, or register
for products or services, a cookie helps that company remember
who you are. So, the next time that you visit, they will have a
good idea of what to show you. Or, for your convenience, you
would not have to re-register as the cookies would provide this
information from your previous visit.

WARNING: You are always in control of what information that

you provide to anyone while online. You need to be cautious of
some web sites that request too much information about you.
If You Want to Control Which Cookies You Accept:You can
order your browser to accept all cookies or to alert you every
time a cookie is offered. Then you can decide whether to accept
one or not.

If you're using Internet Explorer 6.0:

1. Choose Tools, then

2. Internet Options.

3. Click the Privacy tab

4. Default setting is medium.

Move the slider to determine which setting you prefer.

5. You can also click on Advanced for specialized cookie

treatment.

Change Drive Letters in windows Xp

When you add drives to your computer, such as an extra hard

drive, a CD drive, or a storage device that corresponds to a drive,
Windows automatically assigns letters to the drives. However,
this assignment might not suit your system; for example, you
might have mapped a network drive to the same letter that
Windows assigns to a new drive. When you want to change drive
letters, follow these steps:

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.

2. Under Computer Management, click Disk Management. In the

right pane, you’ll see your drives listed. CD-ROM drives are
listed at the bottom of the pane.

3. Right-click the drive or device you want to change, and then

click Change Drive Letter and Paths.

4. Click Change, click Assign the following drive letter, click the
drive letter you want to assign, and then click OK.

You will not be able to change the boot or system drive letter in
this manner. Many MS-DOS-based and Windows-based
programs make references to a specific drive letter (for example,
environment variables). If you modify the drive letter, these
programs may not function correctly.

Hibernate computer to save time

Hibernate for faster start

If you turn-down computer when you're not working on it, you

will save the energy, but not the time. If you don't want to wait
until computer turns on, log on, ... than you can use Hibernate
function. However, you can't "sleep" all computer like that.
Windows 9x with Fat32, for example, can't hibernate.

How you can tell if your system can hibernate?

In Windows 2000 or Windows XP, login like administrator.Go to

control panel >>power options and then to hibernate tab. Open
that tab and see "Disk space for hibernation". See if your
computer fits that condicions. Check "Enable hibernation" and
be shore there is no error message.
Next time when you chose "Start-Shutdown" (Windows 98, ME
and 2000), chose Hibernate option and go OK. In WindowsXP,
chose "Start-Turn Off Computer" and click Shift button to turn
"Stand By" button to "Hibernate" button.

Change the icons of Drives

All the Xp users would have been bored by the boring icons in
their My Computer panel which are adjacent to the Hard disk
drives(C:,D: or whatever drive letter you have).

Here is a simple tweak by which you will be able to change this

monotonous icon to anything you like, even your own Picture if
you wish

You can put any image in place of one which I have shown, even
the picture of your favourite celebrity or your dream caror your
own Picture.

Here are the steps you need to follow:

1.First of all the picture you want to use should have .ico
extension(if you already have a pic with .ico extension proceed to
step 2).Most of the pictures we normally use have extensions
like .jpg,.bmp,.png..gif etc, so you first need to convert them to
one with .ico extension. This is simple.Just go here and put your
original image in the 'Source Image 'section, then click on
'Generate Favicon.ico ' button to get your image with .ico
extension.

2.Now go to My Computer.Suppose you want to put this icon in

place of your original C: image.
Double click and enter C: .Paste your .ico image file in it.Also
create a new text file and in it type the following lines:
[autorun]
ICON=favicon.ico

Remember that 'favicon.ico' in the second line is the name of

your image file.If you have an image file with .ico extension by
the name of 'abc.ico',then use that in the second line in place of
'favicon.ico'.

3.Now rename this text file as ' autorun.inf ' (without the quotes).

Important Note:How do I rename my text file as autorun.inf ?

Ans.Go to Tools->Folder options.Under the View tab uncheck the
'Hide extensions for known file types'.Press apply. Now rename
your text file as 'autorun.inf'.

4.Now restart your Pc.You are done.Check out the cool new
picture you have just added in your My computer panel.

How to find the IP address of sender in YAHOO

When you receive an email, you receive more than just the message.
The email comes with headers that carry important information that can tell where
the email was sent from and possibly who sent it. For that, you would need to find
the IP address of the sender. The tutorial below can help you find the IP address of
the sender. Note that this will not work if the sender uses anonymous proxy servers.

Finding IP address in Yahoo! Mail

1. Log into your Yahoo! mail with your username and password.
2. Click on Inbox or whichever folder you have stored your mail.
3. Open the mail.
4. If you do not see the headers above the mail message, your headers are not
displayed. To display the headers,* Click on Options on the top-right corner* In the
Mail Options page, click on General Preferences* Scroll down to Messages where
you have the Headers option* Make sure that Show all headers on incoming
messages is selected* Click on the Save button* Go back to the mails and open that
mail.
5. You should see similar headers like this:Yahoo! headers : nameLook for Received:
from followed by the IP address between square brackets [ ]. Here, it is
202.65.138.109.That is be the IP address of the sender!
6. Track the IP address of the sender

NEW APPLE SAFARI BROWSER

I was excited when I got to know that Apple Safari browser is

available for Windows. It's in Public Beta, meaning anyone can
download and test it but it's not 100% stable. Apple claims that
Safari is the fastest web browser on any platform. Safari loads
pages up to 2 times faster than Internet Explorer 7 and up to 1.6
times faster than Firefox 2. On the comparison chart, Safari 3 is
the fastest in terms of HTML Performance, Javascript
Performance and Application Launch compared to Firefox 2,
Internet Explorer 7 and Opera 9. I've tested it and I liked the
way Safari loads the website while it's still downloading the site.
It makes you feel that it's already loaded and it's fast.

TABS IN YAHOO MESSENGER

As you may have seen in the preview of Yahoo! Messenger for
Windows Vista, tabbed IM windows are coming soon. This
feature lets you group multiple conversations into one IM
window and use tabs to navigate among them.

As it turns out, there are several hidden features that are built
into Yahoo! Messenger, which can be turned on with changes to
the Windows registry settings. One of our Messenger engineers,
Hung Nguyen, developed some code that when installed, adds
tabs to Yahoo! Messenger 8.1 (on Windows XP).

To try it out, first close all the IM windows you have open. Then
click the “Turn ON tabs in Yahoo! Messenger” link below. When
the download window appears, click the “Run” button and
follow the on-screen instructions to install it. The next time
you’re in two or more IM conversations at the same time, you’ll
see the tabs in action. To close a tab, just right click on it.

GET THE SERIAL NUMBER WITH GOOGLE

Get the serial number you need ! (For Certain Things)*

Go to Google.*

In the search field type: "Product name" 94FBR

* Where, "Product Name" is the name of the item you want to

find the serial number for.
* And voila - there you go - the serial number you needed.

HOW DOES THIS WORK?

Quite simple really. 94FBR is part of a Office 2000 Pro cd key

that is widely distributed as it bypasses the activation
requirements of Office 2K Pro. By searching for the product
name and 94fbr, you guarantee two things. 1) The pages that are
returned are pages dealing specifically with the product you're
wanting a serial for. 2) Because 94FBR is part of a serial number,
and only part of a serial number, you guarantee that any page
being returned is a serial number list page.

See these example searches:

"Photoshop 7" 94FBR

"Age of Mythology" 94FBR
"Nero Burning Rom 5.5" 94FBR

HOW TO LOAD GMAIL FASTER

Hi guys, of late, gmail has been loading very slowly for me. This
means that, when ever I give my username and password at the
login screen, after successful login, the screenshot shown below
displays.
When that happens we hate to wait for infinitely long times. So, I
discovered a simple hack through which you can eliminate that
screen.

Notice that the address bar contains the URL of the format
http://mail.google.com/mail?auth=DQAA etc.

Now, all you have to do is, change the “http://” in your browser’s
address bar to “https://”, which means the URL will now look
like https://mail.google.com/mail?auth=DQAA etc. Press Enter.

HACK PASSWORDS USING FIREFOX

Whenever you log in to a website using your username and

password, you'll be prompted by Firefox whether you'd like
Firefox to remember this password.
If you click on Remember, the next time you visit the website, it'll
automatically enter the username and password for your
convenience.

Now, back to the topic. Let's say you saved your GMail password
in Firefox. After months or years gone by and you don't
remember the password you set for my GMail. You started to
panic and desperately need to get back your GMail password.

Don't worry, here's how you can find the hidden GMail
password in Firefox.

Firefox is much better than Internet Explorer in terms of

managing "remembered" logins. In Internet Explorer, there is no
built-in feature where you can manage or view your saved login
information. That's why you need third party tools to reveal the
passwords hidden under asterisks. As for Firefox, you can access
remembered passwords with a few clicks.
To view your remembered passwords in Firefox browser, go to
Tools, and click on Options. Go to Security tab and click on the
Show Passwords button. A remember password dialog box will
appear. Click on the Show Passwords button again and a new
column with password will appear.
