CE 20 – Structural Design 1 (Reinforced Concrete)

Plate No. 1
DESIGN OF SINGLY REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS

I. Answer accordingly:
1. Why is it important that a singly reinforced concrete beam be tension-controlled?
2. Why does the code specify that a certain percentage of reinforcing to be used in beams?
3. Aside from the overall safety provision in the design of reinforced concrete structures, the code
also provides that the capacity be reduced by multiplying its theoretical capacity by a strength
reduction factor, ϕ. Why?
II. Problem :
A reinforced concrete slab system is supported by beams as shown in the figure. Design edge &
interior, continuous, 6-bay beam, built integrally with 175 mm slab. Material strength will be f’c =
35 MPa and fy = 415 MPa. Use NSCP 2010.
Design considerations:
1. Service Dead Loads
a. Ceiling = 0.48 kPa
b. Flooring & floor finishes = 1.1 kPa
c. Façade = 1.68 kPa (Edge beam)
2. Service Live Load
a. Lobbies and ground floor corridors = 4.8 kPa
