The Sonata in A minor for Arpeggione and Fortepiano, D. 821, was written by
Franz Schubert in his last years, in November 1824. The sonata is the only substantial
composition for the arpeggione. The instrument was invented by Viennese guitar maker
Johann George Stauffner, who was Schubert’s friend around 1823.
