BRIEF HISTORY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE PHILIPPINES

A. Before the Spanish Time
The science and technology during the pre-colonial period or before the colonization of Spaniards was seen in the
native’s way of living. It is observed in the way they are planting their crops for them to consume, the way they are
taking care of the animals that they are using to accomplish their daily tasks and also for food production. In early
times, people are also using astrology and astronomy to predict the important seasons in their lives. They are observing
the movement of the heavenly bodies to predict the seasons and climate. People before also learned to use science
in cultivating the soil that will be used for the agricultural purposes and later on discovered medicine to cure the diseases
that occur during this time. Technology also flourished during this time, but it is not that advanced before. People used
their knowledge in building their houses and making tools that they used in their everyday life. Tools that are invented
during this time are also used for planting purposes, hunting, cooking, and fishing. Native people used this tools in
fighting and protecting their tribes. Entertainment are also seen during pre-colonial era, they invent instruments from a
simple craft to be used for their rituals and for entertainment. The discoveries and inventions of the early people are
materialized through the use of science and technology, these inventions were developed and innovated and became
beneficial to the people nowadays. These inventions made our life easier and more convenient.

According to Pittioni, et.al. (2018) Stone Age refers to the pre-historic cultural era that distinguished the use of
stone as the main object in making of their tools. It is where the oldest known tools made from stone were discovered.
