CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

As one of the 4th year students that have undertaken the course in Civil Engineering, it

was a very special opportunity for me to put my academic experience into a real world

application. The course has provided me the venue to further enhance and broaden my

knowledge and competency as a civil engineering student and for future career objectives after

graduation. As a student trainee, I have been able to take advantage of the tools and skills I have

been equipped by my intensive academic formation in the university, to be competent enough

in pursuing different opportunities available in the outside world.

Our first week on the internship was personally motivating and enhancing. Sir Dominique,

Site Engineer gave us a brief orientation regarding the project, safety on workplace and stood as

our Immediate Supervisor for the whole training. Of course, he briefed us of our duties and

responsibilities we have been tasked as a student trainee. We were exposed to the actual

processes of construction “Proposed Fence and Warehouse” owned by Tarlac Electric Inc. in San

Vicente Tarlac City. These include masonry works, electrical works, scaffolding and form works,

steel works, and other construction processes. After the orientation, he taught us how to

estimate materials. Our first task is to estimate the materials to be used in pouring one of the

footing. After that, we make an inspection of the material used. Before the end of the week we

also taught paper works like daily progress of the project and man power.

For our second week, just like the first week we make an inspection of the material used

and paper works. In addition, we made inspection of workers of what they started and finished

in a day and we also helped to went to the testing center to test the strength design of jobmix on

the site. We also estimate the materials needed for the beam added that was not in plan of the
project to find out the additional cost. Also we started monitoring for inventory and before the

end of the day we list all the used materials as well as the stocks to simply find out if it is need to

order for delivery. And I was able to gather important and significant information which helped

me to learn more and understand the fundamentals of the work. Of course, my academic training

experience was a great help in doing my knowledgeable task. In the middle of the week the

weather is unexpectedly became cloudy and rainy so the operation stops thus causing delays on

the project.

For the third week, It was different from previous week because in this week we did a lot

on office works specially in editing of programs like Excel and Autocad based on the structure as

built. For the second time they taught us how to estimate, in this time steelworks in turn. For our

second task we compute the cutting list of bars to be used of one part of the warehouse. Then

we did filing of papers in alphabetical and by date to easily figure out what they wanted in case

it is needed. We were also able to contribute our little knowledge for the accomplishment of particular

tasks. Most importantly, we had the opportunity to interact with a group of people whom we shared our

interests as an individual. We were able to improve our leadership skills, communication, and social for

career growth while working with other people.

REACTION

The on-the-job training I had under the ESE Architectural Services and Supply served as a

motivation for me to improve myself and be better as a civil engineering student and an aspiring

professional engineer of the country in the near future. It contributed to my realization of the significant

role of the field of my career in the national development and improvement of the country. The practicum

experience is worth the time, effort, and hard work. The short period of time that I have spent in the site
contributed a lot in increasing my awareness and understanding the practical application of my course. It

has led me to the realization to be more eager in pursuing the bright and strong outlook of my future. My

limited and ideological grounding was enriched by my practical experience from a more realistic

foundation of social conditions. The experience influenced my commitment, competence and compassion

as a BS Civil Engineering student who is soon to be a part of the society outside as a working professional.
