7.2 MEASURES OF DISPERSION

7.2.8 Effects on Range, Interquartile Range, Sariance and Standard Deviation.
1. A set of data has a range of 12 , an interquartile range of 8 and a standard deviation of 1.4.
Each value in the set is divided by 2 and then 3 is subtracted from it. Find
a) the new range
b) the new interquartile range
c) the new standard deviation.

2. A set of data has a range of 20 and a variance 36. Each value in the set is multiplied by 3 and
then 2 is added to it. Find
a) the new range
b) the new variance

3. A set of data has an interquartile range of 8 and a standard deviation 10. Each value in the set is
divided by 2 and then then 3 is subtracted from it. Find
a) the new interquartile range
b) the new standard deviation.

4. Given that the mean, median and standard deviation for the set of data x 1 , x2 , x3 , ……x10,
are 6, 5 and 4 respectively. For the set of data 2x 1 – 1, 2x2 – 1 ., 2x3 – 1 , ….., 2x10 – 1. State
a) the mean
b) the median
c) the standard deviation.

5. a) Find the standard deviation for the data 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8

b) By using your answer in (a), find the standard deviation for the following set of data
i) 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40
ii) -1, 0, 1, 2, 4, 5
iii) 14, 21, 28, 35, 49, 56

6. A set of six numbers 4 , a , 6, 10, b, and 18 has a mean 9 and a standard deviation 6.
Given a + b = 16, find the value of a and b.

7.2.9 Comparison Between Central of Tendency and Dispersion Between Two Sets of Data.
1. Table shows the performance of 2 runners in a speed test.
Runner Time taken (minutes)
Runner 1 3.6, 4.5, 5.2, 6.7, 7.5
Runner 2 4.6, 4.8, 5.3, 6.0, 6.8
a) Find mean and standard deviation of time taken for both runners.
b) Determine the runner who is more consistent. Explain.

2. Table shows the marks for 2 students in five tests.

Student Marks
Student A 51, 46, 39, 64, 70
Student B 48, 34, 56, 75, 57

a) Find the mean and standard deviation of the marks for students A and B.
b) Compare and comment on the performance of these 2 students.
