c. Looking at all scores, winning or losing, is there a mode of the data set? If so, what is it? Knowing
what you know about football, does it make sense that this score would be the mode?
d.Another statistic that we have not talked about is the range. Find the range for each: a. Which of the
twelve Super Bowls had the greatest range? Which Super Bowl was that and what was the range?

4. A medical study was conducted to learn the effect of caffeine on heart rate. Participants were asked
to drink one 250-mL cup of coffee and record their number of heartbeats over a 15-second interval.
The following data were collected. Heartbeats in 15 seconds:

a) What is the range?
b) What are the median and the mean?
c) Identify any possible outlier(s). Should the outlier(s) be removed from the data set? Explain why or
why not.
d) How would removing the outlier(s) affect the median and the mean?
5.Steven scored 338 points in 26 basketball games this fall. Micha played in 8 fewer games than
Steven. Her mean score per game was 0.5 points higher than Steven’s. How many total points did
Micha score in her basketball season?

b. Identify the outlier in this data set. Drop the outlier and recalculate the mean and median. Which of
these two summary measures changes by a larger amount when you drop the outlier?

12. The following data set lists the number of women from each of 12 countries who were on the
Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings Top 50 list as of July 18, 2011. The data, listed in that order,
are for the following countries: Australia, Chinese Taipei, England, Germany, Japan, Netherlands,
Norway, Scotland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, and the United States.

a. Calculate the mean and median for these data.
b. Identify the outlier in this data set. Drop the outlier and recalculate the mean and median. Which of

13. Twenty business majors and 15 economics majors go bowling. Each student bowls one game. The
scorekeeper announces that the mean score for the 15 economics majors is 138 and the mean score for
the entire group of 35 students is 150. Find the mean score for the 20 business majors.

14. Seven airline passengers in economy class on the same flight paid an average of $418 per ticket.
Because the tickets were purchased at different times and from different sources, the prices varied.
The first five passengers paid $420, $210, $415, $695, and $496. The sixth and seventh tickets were
purchased by a couple who paid identical fares. What price did each of them pay?

Notice that each value of the second data set is obtained by adding 7 to the corresponding value of the
first data set. Calculate the mean for each of these two data sets. Comment on the relationship
