Which parts of the story changed your perspective on life ?

Explain .

In the novel Dear Mr. Kilmer written by Anne Schraff , there are multiple
events that changed my view on life . The first event was the first time
Richard encountered Hannah Schermer in the story . Someone wrote “Dirty
Hun” all over her book cover making her cry . When Richard spoke to his
classmates , Abner , Harry and Blanche , they simply said that she IS a
Hun . They said that Germans are Huns , showing how easy it is for people
at a young age to be racist . Richard totally did not agree with their doings ,
he defended Hannah .

The second event was where Richard signed the sympathy card for the
Schermers alone . He knew by doing so , others would not approve of his
action but he signed the card anyway because he knew it was the right
thing to do considering the Schermers’ tavern had just been vandalised .
Richard did not really care to be the black sheep in that situation and even
when Mrs. Hansen felt like it was useless , Richard wanted to deliver the
card himself . Richard shows the act of kindness even though he knew
what the aftermath would be like .

The third event was where Hannah turned down the role of Lady Liberty .
Though she deserved it , she knew that others disagree with her having the
role so she turned it down . She wrote an essay about making peace and
she did just that . Sometimes you must sacrifice something valuable to you
for the greater good . Hannah showed that the “role” was not that important
in comparison to the “peace” she wanted .
