DEAR MR KILMER - PLOT (PENTAGON)
Write Synopsis of Chapter 1-10

CHAPTER 1
Chapter 1
The Knight family live on a farm near Turtle Lake in Iowa,
America. One day in 1917 Richard, Pa and Richard's brother, Gus,
hike 5 mile to their small hunting cabin in the woods. Richard is
going to shoot his rst deer the next day.
Their father tells Richard not to go hunting anymore if he
dislikes it. He then asks Richard to help Gus in the cabin. In the
hunting cabin, Gus advises Richard to t in with other people
and be active in sports to be popular. He also tells him to try out
for baseball and get over his dislike for hunting to make their
father proud of him.
Richard cannot understand why his father thinks that hunting is
important and his father is sad that he cannot kill animals.
Richard recalls the day when his grandfather shot and killed a
deer. He was only eight years old then, but he has felt sad about
it all these years. He writes a poem about it and feels a little
better.
Richard locks up the poem with all the other poem he has return
in his drawer. Nobody knows he writes poetry. He keeps it a
secret because as it is, people think he is strange.
At dawn, the next day, they follow the creek to a large pool and
wait in the bushes. Richard prays silently that no deer will come.
Soon a large buck (male deer) comes to drink water. It is less
than 50 feet away. Richard can shoot it but he purposely.
Their father tells Gus to unload his gun and go back to the
hunting cabin to pack all the things. He wants to talk to Richard.
Richard's father ask Richard why he deliberately missed shooting
the deer. Richard tells him that he has no right to kill it. It's
painful and he feels sad to kill an animal.
CHAPTER 2
t was already April and the news the US joining the war against
Germany came.It was also spiring and Richard and Gus could go
to school freely.At school,Gus did more sports than studying
while Richard excelled very well at studying.He enjoyed History
and English classes.One morning,her English teacher,Mrs
Hansen decided to read out a poem to the whole class but while
doing so,some troublemakers such as Abner Lewis and Harry
Carver interrupted he.Abner said that poetry was not manly but
Mrs.Hansen proved him by telling him that a lot of poets were
very brave and patriotic.Even some of them were troublemakers
too.
   After class,Richard met Mrs Hansen and she lent him the book
by Mr.Kilmer.Richard secretly took the address of where
Mr.Kilmer worked and went out the class.Outside,he found
Hannah Schemer crying while holding her scrawled book.She
was called " Dirty Hun" on the book .Richard tried to console her
but she just left him.
  Then,Richard caught up with Blanche Freebold,Abner Lewis
and Henry Carver.All three of them were talking bad things
about Hannah and her family.Richard was not happy so he went
home alone.After doing his chores,he went up to his room and
read Trees and other poems.Halfway through the book,he
decided to write to Mr.Kilmer .In the letter, he praised Mr.Kilmer
for his bravery and asked his opinion on what he should do
about his own poetry interest.Expecting no reply,he still mailed
out the letters.
Chapter 3
The tavern owned by Hannah Schermer’s parents was
vandalized, so to show some concern-sympathy, Mrs. Hansen
handed over a card to the students to sign. All except Richard
didn’t sign the card. Feeling responsible, Richard took the card
from Mrs. Hansen and went over to Hannah’s to give the card.
Before he could get there, he had to ght over with Abner and
Harry because they were bullying him and Hannah. Upon
reaching, Richard was treated badly by Hannah and he was being
understandable of her situation and left the place after giving
the card to her. When he got home, Angie surprised him by
handing over to him a letter from New York, from Joyce Kilmer
himself. 
synopsis chapter 5
it was the end of school and richard shared mr kilmer's letters to
the class.After a mixed response from the students,richard read
the second letter from mr kilmer which he shares about his
family,his training and his posting to france.He also praises
richard poetic talents.This time the class hushed and some nd
new respect for richard .Richard is relieved that his secret is
out.Mrs Hansen wants richard to read the poem his going to
send to Mr Kilmer which is about soldiers going to war.Hannah
suggest idea for the last line and rischard gladly adopt it.In
history class,Mr Higby described about the current battle.He
also reminded the class to keep abreast of war during
summer.During the summer,richard works at the family
farm.One night he write a poem about his pa and very pleased
with his work.Richard receive a reply from Mr Kilmer.He praised
his work on the soldiers and he also comments on Presidents
Wilson dreams that this war will end all war
Synopsis of chapter 7
Richard kept his applause for Hannah despite the fact he knew
what was the consequences. Then, everyone in the whole school
started to talk about the Mrs. Hansen choice of Lady Liberty. To
everyone relief, Hannah eventually resigns her role as Lady
Liberty because of issues that were rising. To everyone shocking
revelation, Richard turned down the offer to be Doughboy,
instead the roles were given to the runner ups of the best
essays- Herbie ad Millie. Rumours spread like wild re across the
whole school. When Richard went home to inform his that he is
having supper at Hannah`s place, his was confronted about the
Doughboy issue and was said that he is not being patriotic and
that he was traitor. Richard met Mr and Mrs Schermer and
realized they had quite a number of similarities – they enjoyed
poetry and music as much as Richard did. He enjoyed his time at
Hannah`s household and her parents and he was always
welcomed into their home. 
CHAPTER 10
Richard reads the news on how Mr Kilmer was killed.He startled
when he sees Mr Kilmer's picture in the newspaper.He runs
through  the streets of Turtle Lake and climbs the highest  had nally arrived in franc,Richard was hoping that the war will
branches of the oak tree.Richard is deeply dissapointed and
decides to stop writing another new poem.Anywah he goes back
home and writes another poem entitiled "In Memory of Sergeant
Joyce Kilmer."After writing  it,he wants to share  it to
somebody.He shares it with the Schermers  because only they
will understand.Hannah cries and Mr Schermers shed his
tears.Richars feels guilty because his poem makes them think
about Otto.Mr Schermers suggests Richard to send it to
TurtleLake Weekly because they were many felt the same way as
them.
Hannah accompanies  him to the newspaper of ce.When Mr
Garrison begins to read the poem,Richard gets nervous and
leaves because  he scared his father will be angry.A few days
later,the poem  published in the newspaper.After the farm
works,Pa ask Richard if he knows that Mr Kilmer has
died.Richard says he does.Pa  comes with the newspaper  and
talk about his brother Roland.Pa sobs and tells Richard about his
brother Roland.Pa is amazed how Richard could use those word
in his poem.
          In mid November 1918,The allies win.Pa ,Angie and Richard
laughed because Gus still training hard for the war that is over.In
the end,Pa always  listen to Richard's poem and makes
correction and give suggestion.He also gives compliment to his
son.
Chapter 4

Getting a reply from Mr. Joyce Kilmer was too good to be true as
he read the letter. He wants Richard to overcome his fears and
do what he must do. He decided to tell his family while they
were having their desserts. He confessed that he’s into poetry
and has been writing to Joyce Kilmer who is a soldier and a
writer who was introduced by his English class teacher. Gus
advised Richard not to tell anyone in school as what he did
earlier caused him a bad reputation. He asked Mrs. Hansen to
help him in choosing the right poem to send to Mr. Joyce Kilmer
and it was the one written during a thunderstorm. Hannah
apologized for misbehaving to him and tells Richard how she
dislikes moving to Milwaukee. She also tells that her brother,
Otto has joined the army as well. On his way home, Richard saw
the train lled with soldiers who were laughing and smiling
while some were waving at him. Reality hits and Richard is
worried about Otto and Joyce Kilmer.
Synopsis chapter 6
Richard and Mr Kilmer exchanged a number of letter throughout
the summer,Richard sent a poem with each letter and always
delighted to receive encouragement and suggestion for
improvement.In early september,Mr Kilmer told richard that he
end before Mr Kilmer went to europe.School started again
Synopsis of chapter 8
When Richard arrived home after having a wonderful time at the
Schermer's household, what he didn't expect to see Pa waiting
for him. He was shocked to hear that his father found out about
the Doughboy incident. Richard admitted that he turned down
the part because everyone targeted Hannah because she got the
part as Lady Liberty. Pa advised Richard that he shouldn't be too
nice with everyone and he should be taking care of "our people"
and the Schermer's were not "our people." Rumours were still
going on about Richard was a traitor and was siding with the
Germans; but it didn't seem to affect his mood. Hannah and
Richard's relationship bond grew stronger as the days go by. He
would share his poetry and letters from Mr. Kilmer to them and
they share his happiness and anxiety. They would all pray for the
safe return of Otto, Hannah's brother and Mr. Kimer. The
Schermer's household was his oasis in a desert of loneliness. In
January, Mr. Kilmer writes a letter to Richard about he misses his
family and how dif cult Christmas was without him by their sid.
To cheer him up Hannah made him some cookies and her
mother made him a scarf to keep him warm during the winter
war.
