World Olympic Day is observed on 23rd June all around the world.
• Olympic Day was introduced in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games on 23
June 1894 at the Sorbonne in Paris.
• So first Olympic Day was celebrated on 23 June 1948 by 9 National Olympic Committees (NOC).
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) formally opened its new headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
• It has been opened exactly 125 years after the Olympic Games were revived.
• The Olympic House has been built on the site of the former headquarters, and 95 per cent of the old
materials were reused and recycled.
• Designed by architecture firm 3XN of Denmark, the energy-efficient building has won international
awards for sustainability.
3. Govt develops a National Strategic Plan to end TB by 2025
The government has developed a National Strategic Plan with the goal of ending Tuberculosis (TB) by 2025.
• Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Ashwini Kumar Choubey said India accounts for 27.4
lakh estimated new TB cases annually, which is the highest in terms of absolute numbers.
• He said the estimated cases of TB in the country is 204 per lakh population for the year 2017 as per last
year's Global TB report.
• However, India ranks 35th in the world in terms of TB cases per lakh population.
4. Civil Aviation Minister inaugurates Air Traffic Flow Management - Central Command Centre
Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri inaugurated Air Traffic Flow Management, ATFM - Central
Command Centre at Vasant Kunj in New Delhi.
• The system is primarily meant to address the balancing of capacity against the demand to achieve optimum
utilization of the major resources like airport, airspace and aircraft at every Indian airport where there is a
capacity constraint.
• It integrates flight data from various subsystems like Air Traffic Control ATC Automation System, flight
s and flight messages.
• The system also displays weather information along with static information about airports, airspaces and
air routes.
The Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks has granted the iconic Kolhapuri chappals a
Geographic Indication (GI) tag.
6. Indian women's rugby team claims 1st-ever international Rugby 15s victory
The Indian women's rugby team claimed a historic first-ever international Rugby 15s victory with a 21-19 win
over Singapore to finish third in the Asia Women's - Division 1 Rugby XVs Championship in Manila.
• The tournament was one of the qualifying rounds for the 2021 Women's Rugby World Cup to be held in
New Zealand.
• China won the tournament with a 68-0 victory over hosts Philippines in a one-sided final.
• The Asian tournament was being held from June 19 to 22.
India's ace Pankaj Advani has clinched the 35th men's Asian Snooker Championship in Doha to complete a career
grand slam in cue sports.
• Advani defeated Thanawat Tirapongpaiboon 6-3 in the final to become the only one to win the Asian and
World championships in all formats.
• He conquered the ACBS Asian Snooker events - 6-red (short format) and 15-red (long format) - along
with the IBSF World Championships in both formats too.
• Having already accomplished it in Billiards, Pankaj had this elusive 15-red Asian Snooker title missing
from his silverware collection.
Former Liverpool and Chelsea football striker Fernando Torres has announced his retirement from football.
• The 35-year-old Spaniard scored 81 goals across four seasons with Liverpool and won the Champions
League, Europa League and FA Cup with Chelsea.
• A World Cup winner with Spain in 2010, Torres announced his retirement through social media.
