• Commonwealth Games medalist Babita Phogat and Kabaddi player Kavita Devi have been appointed as
deputy directors in the Sports and Youth Affairs Department of Haryana.
• Babita Phogat and Kavita Devi will have to join their department within a month. They had applied for
these posts under the state government.
• The two sportpersons have been appointed as deputy director (Sports) under the Haryana Outstanding
Sportspersons (Recruitment and Conditions of Service) rules, 2018.

Harikrishna ranked 2nd at Biel Chess Festival
• Indian Grandmaster, P Harikrishna has finished second in the rapid section of the 53rd Biel International
Chess Festival in Switzerland.
• The World No. 26 scored 10 points, two less than Radoslaw Wojtaszek of Poland, who finished on top.
• Earlier, the Indian GM had finished on top in the ACCENTUS Chess960 tournament, with 5.5 points.

• Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes-Great Britain) has won the Formula One British Grand Prix 2020 held on
August 02, 2020. He came first, despite a puncture during the last lap.
• Max Verstappen ended up second in this F1 race while Charles Leclerc came third.
• This is the third win for Hamilton in this season of F1 races.
India withdraws from women’s world team Squash championship
• India has withdrawn from the women’s world team Squash championship scheduled in Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia from 15th to 20th December, due to lack of preparation, time and match-readiness of its players.
• Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI) has decided to withdraw from the championship.

IPL Cricket - 2020 to begin from Sept 19 in UAE
• PL 2020 will be played from September 19 to November 10 in the UAE this year.
• The decision to this effect was taken at a virtual meeting of IPL Governing Council last night.
• The matches will be played in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi subject to necessary clearances from the
Government of India.
• The final will be played on 10th November this year.
• The 53-day tournament will witness 10-afternoon matches starting at 3:30 PM Indian time while the
evening matches will start at 7:30 PM

• The legendary Spanish footballer Iker Casillas, who played as goalkeeper for Real Madrid, has announced
his retirement from professional football.

• The 39-year-old Casillas made 725 appearances for Real Madrid, during which he won three Champions
League titles and five La Liga titles.
• He also helped Spain to win the 2010 World Cup and two successive European Championships in 2008
and 2012.
Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju chaired 1st General Council meeting of Khelo India Scheme
• Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju chaired the first General Council meeting of the Khelo India Scheme on 4th
July.
• The annual competitions like the Khelo India Youth Games and University Games, are being organized at
the national level under the Khelo India Scheme.
• This has helped to identify sporting talent from all states.
Highlights:
• The meeting urged the states to organize State-level Khelo India Games annually with an effort to identify
a larger number of grassroots-level talents.
• The States that already conduct annual sporting competitions are directed to align with the Khelo India
Scheme.
• The Government of India reaffirmed to support them in conducting these events.
• It was decided to identify talent as young as 5 to 10 years old and groom them to be future champions as
it takes at least eight years to groom an athlete for the Olympics.
• Also, the states have been directed to organize competitions at the district, block, and panchayat-level to
identify young talent.
• The Sports Ministry announced its plan for the 5 zonal talent scouting committees for east, west, north,
south, and northeast India.

• Members of the Indian men's and women's hockey teams bound for Tokyo Olympics will join the National
Camp at National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) in Bengaluru t.

State Government to begin training in Bengaluru.

mobile phone company Vivo for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League.

rupees.

• FIFA and the Asian Confederation (AFC) jointly decided to reschedule the upcoming qualifying matches

Sports Ministry to organise “Fit India Freedom Run”
• “Fit India Freedom Run” would be organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports from 15th August
to 02nd October 2020.
• The ministry is organising “Fit India Freedom Run” to mark the 74th Independence Day of India on August
15 to 151st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2.
• This would be the largest country-wide run, targeted to encourage fitness among the masses while
following the COVID-19 protocols.
• The participants can track the total distance covered by using a Global Positioning System (GPS) watch
or manually.
Cricketer M.S. Dhoni announces retirement from all forms of international cricket
• Indian Cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni has announced retirement from all forms of international cricket.
• Dhoni shared this information on Instagram on August 15, 2020 as- “Thanks. Thanks for ur love and
support throughout. from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired”
• Dhoni is the only Captain to win all three major International Cricket Council (ICC) trophies — the World
Cup, the World Twenty20 and the Champions Trophy.
• Since he has announced retirement from International cricket, he will continue to play for Indian Premier
League (IPL).

• After M.S. Dhoni, Indian cricketer Suresh Raina has also announced retirement from Cricket on August
15, 2020.
• He shared a photo on Instagram with other fellow cricketers including MS Dhoni with a caption, “It was
nothing but lovely playing with you, @mahi7781 . With my heart full of pride, I choose to join you in this

Kevin de Bruyne named Premier League Player of the Season 2019-20
• In Football, the Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has been named as the Premier League
Player of the Season 2019-20.
• He is the only third Belgian footballer to win the award for the league’s top performer, after Eden Hazard
(2014-15) and Vincent Kompany (2011-12).

• England off-spinner Laura Marsh has announced her retirement from all forms of cricket. Marsh had
decided to retire from international cricket last December.
• Marsh had made her debut in 2006 in Tests as a fast bowler but switched to spin bowling later in her
career.
• She was part of the England squad that won the Women’s World Cup in 2009 and in 2017.
• She was also part of the T20 World Cup title-winning side in 2009.
• The 33-year-old played nine Tests, 103 ODIs and 67 T20Is for England, picking up 217 wickets across
formats.
Dream11 wins IPL 2020 title sponsorship rights for Rs 222 crore
• Dream11, a fantasy sports platform, has won the title sponsorship rights for Indian Premier League (IPL)
2020. Dream11 has signed a Rs 222-crore deal with BCCI for this.

• Australian all-rounder Cameron White has announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket.
• The 37-year-old Australian player will however, continue to play at the Premier Cricket level as the captain
of the Melbourne Cricket Club.
• During his international career spanning nearly a decade, White played 91 ODIs scoring 2,072 runs.
• In T20 Internationals, he scored 984 runs from 47 matches, while he played four Tests for Australia, scoring

Sports Ministry restores recognition of Archery Association of India
• Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry has restored the government recognition to Archery Association of India

• Government recognition of AAI was withdrawn eight years back on account of failure to conduct its
elections in accordance with the National Sports Development Code of India. Government recognition of
AAI will be valid for one year.

• Former India pacer Sudeep Tyagi on Tuesday announced retirement from all formats of the game.

• He featured in 14 Indian Premier League matches for Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

• India has been appointed host of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup 2022, the Bureau of the FIFA Council

the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.

Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had sanctioned 5 lakh rupees to the family of deceased Manipuri Footballer
Manitombi Singh in an effort to ease the financial crisis of the family.
• Manitombi, who died in August, 2020 at the age of 39, was the only earning member of his family and is
survived by his wife and a son.
• Manitombi has contributed significantly to Indian football and also contributed as a coach in Manipur.
• The grant of 5 lakh rupees was sanctioned under the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund
for sportspersons.

• His goal helped Senegal secure historic 1–0 win over the then-world champions France in the opening
match of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and Senegal’s first ever match at the FIFA World Cup.

an 18-years-long cricket career.
• The 35-year-old left-hander, who made his international debut in 2002, played 25 Tests, 38 ODIS and two

• While the Gujarat cricketer represented his state in 194 first-class matches.
• Parthiv, made his Test debut under Sourav Ganguly, at the age of 17 years and 153 days, played 65

Russia banned from using its name, flag at Olympics
Russia was banned from using its name, flag and anthem at the next two Olympics or any world championships
for the next two years by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
• The Court of Arbitration for Sport's ruling has also blocked Russia from bidding to host any major sporting
events for two years.
• Despite the ban on Russia, the Russian athletes and teams will be allowed to compete at all International
events in the next two years as neutral athletes including the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, the 2022 Winter
Games in Beijing, the world championships and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
• The three judges of the Court of Arbitration for Sport imposed the most severe penalties on Russia after
allegations of state-backed doping and cover-ups emerged after the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
Breakdancing gets Olympic status to debut at Paris in 2024
• The International Olympic Committee has registered Breakdancing as the newest entry into
Olympics, with the aim to attract a new and younger audience.
• Breakdancing will be known as ‘Breaking’ in the Olympics event.
• The IOC executive board also confirmed skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing for Paris.
• Those three sports will make their Olympic debuts at the Tokyo Games which were postponed

• Madagascar has replaced the Maldives as the host of the 2023 Indian Ocean Island Games due to

Doha to host 2030 Asian Games, Saudi Arabia in 2034
• Doha will host the 2030 Asian Games and rival Riyadh will stage the event in 2034 following a vote by the
Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) General Assembly in Muscat.
• The second hosting city, for 2034, is Riyadh.
• The double award comes after OCA President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah arranged a "win win"
situation which saw the city with the most votes awarded the 2030 Games and the runner-up given 2034.
• 2030 Asian Games will be the 21st edition of the multi-sports event, held after every four years. It is also
known as Asiad.

BCCI Clears 10-Team IPL From 2022
• The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that 10 teams will take part in the Indian
Premier League from 2022. The decision was taken in the BCCI AGM meeting in Ahmedabad.
• Two new teams will be added to the Indian Premier League (IPL) from the 2022 edition, making it a 10-
team league

of offences relating to betting, wagering and irregular match results, the Badminton World Federation

• The BWF opened an investigation against Khakimov after obtaining a statement from a whistleblower,
who claimed the shuttler had approached him to manipulate match results at the European Teams
Championships held in Feb. 2018.

Leon Mendonca becomes India's 67th chess Grandmaster
• Goa’s 14-year-old Leon Mendonca has become India’s 67th chess GrandMaster (GM) by winning the
third and final norm at a tournament in Italy.
• Mendonca, who achieved the feat at 14 years, 9 months and 17 days, is the second GM from the Coastal
State.
• The All India Chess Federation (AICF) acknowledged the development. Leon is the second Indian to
become GM this year after G. Akash.
• He achieved his first GM norm at the Rigo Chess GM Round Robin in October while the second came at
the first Saturday in Budapest in November. His final GM norm came at the Vergani Cup in Italy that ended
on December 30.
• GM is a title awarded by FIDE ( International Chess Federation ). It is the highest title a chess player can
obtain apart from World Champion.

Claire Polosak set to become first female match official in men’s Test match
• Australia’s Claire Polosak is set to become the first female match official in a men’s Test match when
she takes up the fourth umpire’s role in the third Test between India and Australia.
• The 32-year-old from New South Wales has already earned the distinction of being the first woman on-
field umpire in a men’s ODI match in ICC’s Division 2 league between Namibia and Oman played at the
Windhoek in 2019.

Khelo India Ice Hockey tournament begins in Chiktan, Kargil
• In Kargil Ladakh, Khelo India Ice Hockey Tournament is being organised at Chiktan by Zonal Physical
Education Officer Chiktan.
• For the first time the women team of Chiktan also participated in the Khelo India Games in Kargil district.
There are 13 teams from different villages of Chiktan participating in the tournament, which include 11

2022 AFC Women's Asia Cup in India
• 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup, set to be held in India, has been confirmed by the continental governing
body.
• The marquee women's football event will start on January 20, 2022, and will finish on February 6, 2022.
• The tournament has also been expanded to feature 12 of the best teams on the continent. It must be
noted that the previous edition of the Women's Asian Cup, which was held in Jordan, had featured only
eight teams.

• A total of 25 matches will be played across 18 days during the tournament.
