Sessions in classroom
More Related Questions
A classroom session is one of a kind. If someone is not from an IIT/NIT/BITS
campus, then the worst session you would experience inside the campus is at
least 5 times better than the best one you had in your undergrad.
Nearly 35-40% of the professors are GOD-like, while others try their best to be
one. You will be humbled by their knowledge and attitude towards life. I wish I
am .0001% of what they are.
Some numbers and math to ponder
IIM-B has a trimester pattern ( 3 terms per academic year)
1 Term = 10 weeks . You will have to complete 6 courses. Each course has 3 hrs of
classroom sessions (and ideally would require same hours of pre-class
preparation, which never happens!) per week.
Saturday and Sunday are holidays, but most surely be ruined by a quiz over the
weekend (if you care, of course).

The Girls
There is a question floating around in Quora on examples of beauty with brains.
Almost all the girls (Approximately 25% of the 400 sized batch) will make a
strong claim be in that thread. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, perhaps.
They are friendly and ruthlessly shatter stereotypes one might have about girls.
They go and contribute to some of the top companies shaping the world (From
the Mckinseys to the paytms, urbanladders.. ).

Hostel Life and facilities

The food is really good and the cheapest (Rs 76 for the entire day). I have
interacted with friends from all other IIMs who have visited our campus. Almost
all have selflessly claim our campus to be the most beautiful with the best
facilities. There is a great ground with lush green lawn and will convert any non-
sport enthusiast into a decent athlete over the 2 years (there are exceptions).

The greatest takeaway are the moments (I will carry them to my deathbed) I
spent with the great friends / people I met inside the campus. I had to write CAT
5 times to get into an IIM. It was worth it.

Management Kozhikode (2018)
Answered Jan 1, 2018 · Upvoted by Amit, M. B. A from Indian Institutes of Management

I don’t know about IIM Bangalore in Particular, but life will be more or less same
with Kozhikode.

Start of Journey: Somewhere in End of April or Start of May, an Email Arrives in

your mailbox, your hand starts shaking before you open it. Because you know
life will never be the same again.

You tell one of your close friend, and calls messages start pouring.

A week later, you have resigned, scepticism about arranging the big fee amount
new campus, travel arrangement comes in. You are added to a Whatsapp Group:

Every day you wake up this group has at-least 1000 messages till the date of
joining campus arrives. Fast forward 10s of parties, and farewells from office.
The day arrives when you reach Kozhikode after completing 35 hour train
journey.

And you arrive in Gods Own Campus :)

5 hours after you arrive in campus: THE GAME BEGINS

Term 1:
Week One: You dont know the map of campus but by this time you have given at-
least 3–4 quizzes, formed a support system in form of friends because you are
squeezed from all sides. Suddenly sleep time drops to 3–4 hours every day.

Week 2–4: Pressure increases even more, You get to know some seniors who
guide you about sailing term on with there so called “GYAN”. Committee
selection, IG selection process is about to begin. You hardly are able to manage
your academic stress when these things are happening around the Placecom

prepare in your life.

Week 4–8: You only have 24 hours in life, you are juggling between

8 Hours of Compulsory classes from 9am to 4.15 PM, you cant skip them because
if your attendance drops below 80% you will face a grade drop.

CV Preparation Sessions: As summer internship interviews are approaching very

fast you are supposed to finish, you are busy with getting proofs from your past
professors, office. Getting your CV reviewed from numerous seniors. Every time
you go for a formal verification to placecom they will point 10 flaws for which
you will work another 5–6 hours.

IG / Committee Selection: All IGs will flood you with numerous tasks, only a luck
few will know where to apply all others will be applying to numerous IGs and
Committees to collect the so called “CV Points”.

Week 9–10: Committee IG pages will select there candidates, and the first CV
point will be grabbed. But for most of them this will be a group of friends and
moments which they will cherish for a lifetime.

Week 10–12
First End Term Exam: Four Days 8*3=24 exams. With books twice the size of
engineering to be read in one night. Thats how term 1 exam is. Most of the
people will not sleep more than 2 hours in this week. But those who sleep will
end up being the toppers :P

Week 13–15: You will be preparing day and night for the summer placements.
Because now the competition is amongst the best of the best in country. By this
time you know how tough is clearing the best company coming on campus, and
you dont want to keep any stone unturned.

1. So now its the time for party and celebration, but obviously PGP office will
ensure that you have enough of academic load to disturb.

“By this time either you have found your “Best Friend” or best luck till the
juniors come on campus”

May Next Year: Internship, people start flying to all parts of country. Few lucky
ones will go abroad and bring up plethora of experiences to be discussed in
second year. I was lucky to get an opportunity to go Kenya for my Internship.

Term 4–5: Few lucky ones have there Pre Placement Offers in hand by this time,
others are busy in preparing for case study competitions to get at-least a Pre
Placement Interview. Life is relatively slow, most of us have a group of close
friends. With whom we spend most of the time on hostels.

Term 6: Final placements, and parties. Life about to get finished, the feeling of
last few days on campus. Sudden realisation that all these moments passed so
fast and will be over very soon.

Can’t write beyond this……

Life at IIM has to be experienced, no one can describe it in words……..

Let me divide the answer into segments and try to cover each of them in detail:

1. Campus and Infrastructure

As it is said, that a picture says a thousand words so I will let pictures do all the
talking in this section:

2. Hostels/Rooms/Washrooms

The rooms and hostels at are as best as you can get at an academic institution in
India. The rooms are spacious, have a study table, rotating chair, notice board,
white board, a big almirah, bookshelf, mirror and of course a bed. The flooring is
new and has cream coloured tiles. The walls of the room are also clean and you
don’t find random things written on them. :p

All the rooms get good WiFi connectivity (in fact, the whole campus is WiFi) and
have an additional LAN port for people still carrying old chunky laptops that
have LAN ports.

You can get your room cleaned for free just by making a request on the online
portal.

Coming to the washrooms, they are really nice and get cleaned every day. The
cleanliness is as good as one gets in hotels, so you can imagine. Below are some

3. Mess food

The mess food is served 4 times in a day, breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner.
The menu has got a great variety and there will be hardly any day where you will
have an urge to order from outside due to bad taste/quality. Of course, once in a
while, you get bored and want to try out something different from the outside.
But the food quality is really premium as compared to most other engineering
and management colleges in India.

4. Academics, projects and summer placements

Academically, the course is quite rigorous and one needs to learn how to manage
time. The first semester is fully loaded with projects, submissions and exams.
Also, a lot of extra-curricular sports and cultural activities take place in the first
semester. Hence, it gets difficult to cope up as one is not used to such an
environment. Now, if you somehow manage to get decent grades in the first
semester, then a monster in the form of summer placements awaits you in the
second semester. The subjects in the second semester are much more
demanding in terms of beforehand class preparation required and active
participation in the class. This coupled with the fact that one has to attend
company presentations almost every other day and also prepare for the
placements makes the first half of the semester as worst as hell.

If this torture is not enough, then the consult and finance shortlists begin to
come. It really gets depressing when you don’t see your name in list after list.
Your self-confidence takes a hit and you start to doubt your abilities and if you
really deserved to get selected in IIMB. The phase from the starting of the
second semester till the summer placements is the toughest one in the first year.

Now with the end of hectic three days of summer placements, you feel liberated
as if you have successfully won a major war and conquered the enemy. The

second half of the semester gets really chill and sometimes you wonder where to

invest all the free time you have. All in all, the second semester is a roller coaster
ride of emotions with many ups and downs.

5. Culture, tradition and parties

IIMB has a strong culture and the PGP2s are really helpful in making sure that
you face minimum difficulties. From arranging sector talks for placements to
resume guidance to academic mentorship to interview preparation, PGP2s get
your back covered in every possible way. You get genuine advice which is very
helpful, unlike some random advice which you get during your undergraduate.

The late-night block parties, birthday celebrations, regional lunches and dinner,
festival celebrations all ensure that you feel like living in a joint family of 800
odd people.

To sum up, the experience of IIMB is a very enriching one. It makes you better as
a person, enhances your knowledge and gives you an opportunity to make some
lifelong friendships.

P.S. This is only about the first year. I hope to edit once I experience the highs
and lows of second year

Skip this part for insider info in the below section :)

IIMB has one of the most beautiful college campuses in India. Few of the
facilities worth mentioning are single room accommodation, almost 24 hour
eating points, ac eating point like au bon pain, best sports facilities in any of
IIMs.
Average lecture hours per day in first year are 6 which may reduce to 4 to 5 in
second year depending upon the electives chosen in each term.
Typically 5-day working week, with quizzes and exams scheduled on weekends
as well. Sometimes extra classes are scheduled on weekends in case of mid-week
offs (rare).
There are more than 25 clubs including academic - approx one for each
specialization, music, dramatics, sports, etc. which serve as a good forum for
networking and relaxation as well. There are ample sports facilities, both indoor
and outdoor, like badminton (indoor court), basketball, volleyball, football,
cricket, tennis, pool table, etc. to mention few.
Hostel accommodation is provided in a way which further promotes juniors-
seniors interaction, with students from each batch staying within same blocks.

Notable info:
Home Answer Spaces Notifications Search Quora Add Question or Link
1. First year does seem a bit tough, but that's what you signed up for in the first
place.
2. Don't worry about the facilities, I can assure you it will be best 2 years of your
life and you will realize it mostly after 1st year.
3. It will not take long for a person with average social skills (I am one of it) to
socialize within batch as well as with seniors. Everyone's pretty chilled out.
4. There are occasional parties, 2-3 per term called 'L-square'.
5. Girls ratio is not the best, approx 25%-27% in our batch, but I have seen people
finding their life partners within campus. We had a Miss India finalist in our
senior batch, so you never know. :)
6. Hostel food is very good for most meals, specially the breakfast is awesome.
This is a personal opinion. I have seen people complaining as well about food.
7. There are playing fields in between hostel blocks for night cricket, futsal,
volleyball. Badminton court, pool table and other indoor sports are open 24
hours. Feel free to play whenever you want.
8. Best place to eat maggie at 4 in the morning - Park-n-eat.

I may not have covered many things here, hope it helps in someway.

Peace!

assorted readings and assignments to do at night. In the second year, it is
probably an average of 4 hours per day.
2. 5 days of classes, and quizzes are scheduled on weekends.
3. If you play any sport, you can rest assured you will find facilities for that. If
you're inclined towards the arts, there are a bunch of societies on campus that
might interest you.

4. About the hostel: There are two blocks, aptly called Old Blocks and New
blocks. The old blocks (ordered from A to J) are rectangular buildings, with all
the rooms facing a central open area. The new blocks (K to N) are laid out more
like apartments, with long corridors with rooms on either side. One side of the
new blocks faces the Football/Cricket grounds and is generally preferred over
the other side. (Settle down with the drink/book of your choice and watching
people play in the evenings while enjoying the breeze is a good pastime, IF you
get the time to do it).

5. About the food: Again something you wouldn't expect if you are coming from
an engineering college. Meals almost always have 3-4 varieties of curries, with
non vegetarian addons as extra. You won't be disappointed. Although I have
seen people with higher standards scoff at the food, I was pretty happy. (My
erstwhile hostel experience was at Patel Hall of Residence Indian Institute of
Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP), and this was a 200% improvement)

About the girls: The ratio was pretty good. In our batch of 400, there were
around a 100 girls.

Sports infrastructure is good. Individual hostel rooms with no

Girls ratio ~ 25% - second highest after IIM K, if I’m not wrong.
