Philips 6-IE550/**V Interstage Slope Equalizers

Philips 6-IE550/**V interstage slope equalizers have two controls you can adjust, allowing you
more control in maintaining cascade flatness of 550 MHz systems.

• Control R7 lets you adjust the low frequency (50-75 MHz) response up by 0.25 dB, as Figure
2 illustrates.

• Bowing control C5 provides for a broad adjustment of the broadband signature by letting you
adjust the midband frequencies down by 0.0-1.0 dB, as shown in Figure 3.

Figure 1. On 6-IE550//**V equalizers, you can adjust controls R7 and C5.

Figure 2. Using control R7, you can adjust the low frequency response.

Figure 3. Using control C5, you can make broad corrections to the center of the band.

Selecting the Value
Network amplifiers are shipped with a factory-selected 6-IE550/**V interstage slope equalizer
already installed. The value of the 6-IE550/**V is selected so that the network amplifier operates
with the proper carrier-to-noise (C/N) performance for 8 dB of system tilt. The 6-IE550/**V
equalizer selected and installed at the factory could have an 8, 9.5, 11, 12.5 or 14 dB value,
depending on the hybrid signatures.

If you require a system tilt of other than 8 dB, you'll need to change both the 6-IE550/**V
interstage slope equalizer shipped with the network amplifier <BI>and<D> the 6-2E series input
equalizer currently in place.

To find the proper dB value for the interstage slope equalizer and input equalizer, use the table
below.

For this Use this Formula to Find Interstage Use this Formula to Find Input
System Tilt Equalizer Value Equalizer Value
6 decrease factory-installed value of cable span
value by 3.0 dB preceding amp - 8 dB
7 decrease factory-installed value of cable span
value by 1.5 dB preceding amp - 9.5 dB
8 propoer value installed at the factory value of cable span
preceding amp - 11 dB
9 decrease factory-installed value of cable span
value by 1.5 dB preceding amp - 12.5 dB
10 decrease factory-installed value of cable span
value by 3.0 dB preceding amp - 14 dB

For example, you require 6 dB of output system tilt, and your network amplifier is preceded by
21 dB of cable and has a factory-installed 12.5 dB interstage slope equalizer.

• You can find the value of the interstage slope equalizer you require by decreasing the value
of the factory-installed equalizer by 3 dB to get 9.5 dB; thus, you need a 9.5 dB equalizer
from the 6-IE550/**V series.

• You can find the value of the input equalizer you require by subtracting 8 dB from the value
of the cable preceding the amplifier (21 dB) to get 13 dB. Since there is no 13 dB equalizer
available in the 6-2E series, use the next highest value, a 14 dB equalizer.

To install the 6-IE550/**V equalizer in a 6-GNA*95 series global network amplifier or a 6-TNA*95
series trunk network amplifier, follow the instructions below.

1. If the housing is closed, open it by loosening the housing screws in two rounds; partially
loosen each screw (in any order), then loosen the screws fully.

2. If the ALSC is installed, make sure the switch is in the OFF position.

3. Install the desired 6-IE550/**V series equalizer in the interstage slope locations, as shown in
Figures 4 and 5.

4. If applicable, switch the ALSC back ON, and adjust the control to match the previous pilot
level.

5. Once you've installed the equalizer in the correct

6. location, close the housing as follows:

a. Make sure the housing is free of moisture and dirt.

b. In the sequence illustrated below, tighten the screws just enough to make contact with
the cover.

c. In the same sequence, tighten screws to 20-25 in-lb.

d. In the same sequence, tighten the screws to 40-50 in-lb.
