for Youth Mental Health
(Workshop for Integrating Faith-based Ministry
and Intervention)
Yes, this W.I.F.I. has no connection to the internet. But,
in the truest sense, it is a noble move to promote Youth
mental health. Last 5 June 2019, more than fifty
individuals gathered to discuss various concerns
surrounding Youth mental health and how to address
depression, burn-out, and defeating suicidal tendencies.

Thus, the workshop was named “W.I.F.I” or “Workshop
for Integrating Faith-based Ministry and Intervention for
Youth Mental Health ” held at the multi-function rooms
of the New College of Arts and Sciences (NCAS) Building
of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).
The organizers and the facilitators, the resource persons,
and the participants came from: the UP-PGH Department
of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, Section of Child
and Adolescent Psychiatry; the Healing and Counseling
Ministry of the Bukas Loob sa Diyos (BLD) Catholic
Charismatic Covenant Community, San Pablo District; the
Office of the Student Affairs (OSA), UP Los Baños; the
Diocesan Shrine of St. Therese of the Child Jesus Parish
(DSSTCJP); and the Pastoral Office of the Diocese of San
Pablo. Invitees from other units of the UPLB also
attended. (Participating agencies in page 3).
The seminar topics and workshop exercises aimed to gain
better grasp and learn how to deal with the increasing
incidence of depression and suicide in the youth and
young adults in UP Los Baños. Plans for the workshop
emanated from 2018 weekly Word Sharing Circle
meetings of the Counseling and Healing Ministry (CHM)
of the BLD San Pablo District, meetings with DSSTCJ
priests, and later on, several small group meetings of the
CHM leaders with the UP-PGH doctors. The result was
the decision and commitment to conduct the first W.I.F.I.
It was a day full of sharing knowledge, seeing hope and
gaining more understanding, and drawing inspiration,
through the lectures of resource persons and facilitators.
There were eight (8) resource persons from the UP-PGH,
Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine: four of them
discussed specific topics on mental health prior to the
workshop and sharing of experiences among
participants. The eight of them served as facilitators and
resource persons of the six breakout groups. For starters,

personnel from the UPLB Office of Student Affairs
gave a general discussion of the guidance,
counseling and student activities to promote social
interaction, help students in coping with problems,
and how to make their stay in the university fruitful.
Four priests participated in the activities, led by the
BLD SPD Spiritual Director, Rev. Fr. Philip Atienza. He
was joined by Fr. Reynald Atienza, Parochial Vicar of
the DSSTCJ, Fr. Anthony Raymund Apostol of the St. Need for mental health initiatives;

Representing the BLD community were the Stewards of
the San Pablo District, the coordinators and members of
the Healing and Counseling Ministry, members of the
District Leaders Conference and elder BLD members
who also served or are active professors and instructors
of the UP Los Baños, the Youth Ministry coordinators,
and representatives from the Singles Ministry. BLD
members who are active in the medical profession were
also in attendance.

Concept Notes on the
WORKSHOP for INTEGRATING FAITH-based
Ministry and INTERVENTIONS (WIFI) for YOUTH
MENTAL HEALTH
Introduction
Cases of depression and burn-out have risen at an
alarming rate among young students and millennials in
general at the University of the Philippines Los Baños
(UPLB), that sometimes, when “triggered” by negative
incidents in their young lives, lead to attempts of
suicide. Unfortunately, some of these are tragically
completed. The UPLB as well as the UP System have
therefore initiated a series of seminars to make the
UPLB community aware of this phenomenon and
heighten awareness to create interest and educate the
community on how to recognize the warning signs, and
what actions to take to prevent this from occurring.
The University thus initiated the HOPE (Health
Orientation on Problems from Emotional Stress) series
of seminars from 2018 to 2019.
The Diocesan Shrine of St. Therese of the Child Jesus
(DSSTCJ) in the UPLB Campus has been planning since
late 2018, together with the Bukas-Loob Sa Diyos
Catholic Charismatic Covenant Community San Pablo
District (BLD SP) as organizer and convenor, a faith-
based approach to integrate interventions for youth
mental health. The BLD SP has requested technical
assistance and manpower resources from the PGH
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine
(PGH-DPBM) to guide the BLD’s Healing and
Counseling Ministry in the planning and execution of
the proposed program.
The Problems to be Addressed
The proposed series of seminars to be conducted by
the PGH Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral
Medicine aims to address the following challenges
encountered in dealing with depression and burn-out:
•Lack of knowledge about depression (“nag i-inarte
lang,” “nagpapapansin,” “lack of faith,” “kaya mo
yan,” “nababaliw ka na yata,” “walang gamot yan,”
etc.);
• The stigma attached to this problem (families and
persons affected are ashamed to admit the problem or
are unaware of it);
• Absence of support system for those who need help;
• The high cost of medicines and psychotherapy for
those undergoing these symptoms; and

• Lack of institutional recognition of the problem and
support from HMOs, and government institutions and
agencies.
Intended Outcome
The aim is to ultimately form an action program to
organize a community of trained volunteers from
DSSTCJ, BLD SP, and UPLB that will operate proactive
monitoring and assistance, a helpline network, to assist
persons undergoing depression and contemplating
suicide. It aims to employ evidence-based protocols for
monitoring, reporting and preventing suicidal
attempts.
Strategic Plan
The Program shall adopt the classic communication
model of Awareness, Interest, Desire, and Action
(AIDA); since ultimately, the program needs to come
up with an action program and not stop at awareness
and interest stage only. The program’s approach shall
also be guided by a four-pronged approach to long-
term healing and post-vention cases: biologic
(medications); psychologic (counseling/psychiatric
help); social and spiritual (faith community).
The program through the PGH-DPBM resource persons
shall hold a series of Awareness Seminars at the UPLB
campus to be given to groups of 45-50 participants
representing different sectors, homogenous in
composition, to tailor the topics specific to the needs
and roles of participants:
1. Volunteers as program facilitators from the DSSTCJ,
BLD SP, and UPLB (OSA, UPLB Health Service, UPLB
Colleges of Art and Sciences and of Human Ecology);
2. Students’ parents and faculty at UPLB;
3. Student volunteers as peer monitors and help-line
counselors;
4. Government and non-government institutions.
Each topic tackled in the lectures shall be followed by
break-out groups of 10 participants for case discussions
with a facilitator from the PGH-DPBM. The seminar
workshop shall end with a plenary to draft the
resolutions drawn from the discussions leading to an
action plan/program.
The program shall also launch a communication
campaign (perhaps as a project of UPLB Development
Communication and Communication Arts students or
volunteer student organizations) using the social media
on debunking myths about depression and
encouraging persons to seek help as well as to solicit
support from the general public and potential sponsors
(alumni organizations who may want to subsidize the

For five weeks, a total of 55 young people from Los
Baños and Cabuyao with ages from 15 to 21 years old,
answered God’s calling to be lambs of the Bukas Loob sa
Diyos Youth Ministry’s annual Youth Life in the Spirit
Seminar #17. Heart-felt worship services and interactive
shepherding sessions were some of the activities that
helped the youth come closer to God as they opened
their minds and hearts through their whole YLSS journey.
There were also class shepherds who wholeheartedly
said yes to be in charge of the whole event namely,
Laurence Reyes, Anna San Pedro and Aica Dungo and the
rest of the Youth Ministry were part of the Pastoral

And thus, the YLSS Proper held last 8-9 June 2019, was
the main highlight of the entire seminar. There were
sharers of life testimonies who bravely proclaimed how
God's love changed their lives individually. Tears were
shed and hearts were opened, as the lambs listened,
and as they realized how God is so faithful and loving to
each and every one of us.

transformed in God’s love is possible through the help of
a community and with the determination and faith
within one’s heart. The Bukas Loob sa Diyos Youth
Ministry San Pablo District continues to serve the Lord,
bringing back all the glory that He deserves, as they
draw the youth nearer to Him, and be the light upon
every individual’s journey called life.

Teaching for LSS # 9 Graduates
New Creation Gifts of the
Realities & Holy Spirit
The teaching on New Creation Realities
and Gifts of the Holy Spirit was held
last 19 May at DSSTCJ Rm 1. It was
attended by 23 LSS graduates who
were accompanied and guided by their
shepherds. The teaching event
preceded the grand reunion of the LSS
# 9 graduates (in the afternoon) of the
seminar proper and baptism last 04-05
May 2019.
The above teaching serves as the take-
off point for the Formation track
undertaking for the LSS lambs to lead
them along spiritual growth and transformation.
For the lambs to gain more conviction on the significance
of the LSS, Vini Cadiz, former Steward for Formation and
currently Emmaus Ministry coordinator, discussed what it
means to receive the Holy Spirit and the process of
sanctification. “We are sealed with the Holy Spirit the
moment we accept Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and
Savior (Baptism).”
The following discussions were selected from the power
point presentation of Vini Cadiz on “receiving the fruits of
the Holy Spirit and sanctification”.
When we receive Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior at
Baptism, the Holy Spirit comes and enters into our
human spirit.
Charismatics refer to the Baptism of the Holy Spirit as a
second experience where the Holy Spirit now enters into
your soul.
This is why we need to be baptized again.

Spirit-filled — This means both your spirit and your soul
are now filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit. Jesus
now lives in the inside of us through the Holy Spirit. It is
by “in” and “through” the Holy Spirit that we have direct
access to God and Jesus who lives and dwell in heaven.
“For through him, we have access by one spirit
to the Father.” (Ephesians 2:18)
“And by this we know that He abides in us,
by the Spirit whom He has given us.” (1John
3:24).
Once the Holy Spirit comes and enters into your soul as a
result of having received this gift, you will be able to hear
God much better, and much clearer, because the Holy

We need to realize that the Holy Spirit has His peace to
give to us and that He can give it in great abundance. A
peace that surpasses all human understanding especially
when that peace comes right in the middle of a severe
storm cloud in your life.
Without the peace of God operating in your life, you
could be very easily rattled shaken, tormented, and
knocked off your life in the Lord the first time any kind of
adversity could ever come your way.
(3) Forbearance, patience. Patient endurance and
steadfastness under provocation. Forbearance under ill-
will, with no thought of retaliation. Forbearance under
suffering and endurance in the face of adversity.
Sometimes it will be the patience and long suffering of
the Holy Spirit (that will be the only thing) that will give
you the ability to last the entire length of a bad trial.
Learn how to ride and flow with the patience of the Holy
Spirit in your daily life and walk with the Lord. And you
will be able to enter into a much restful, peaceful state,
within your mind and emotions.
Once the love of God start to flow, and operate through
you to touch others, many of the other fruits of the Holy
Spirit will then start to follow like in a domino fashion .
(4) Love for mankind, hospitality, acts of kindness,
readiness to help, human friendship, benevolence,
taking thought of others. Goodness in action, sweetness
of disposition, gentleness in dealing with others,
affability.
You will feel much better about yourself if you can learn
how to treat others with much more kindness and
respect in your daily dealings and affairs with them.
Goodness is so important for each Christian to have

personal relationship with the Lord — hold on fast to the
Lord and stay faithful to Him for the rest of your life.
There is no turning back. Ever.
(5) A character that is equitable, reasonable, forbearing,
moderate, fair and considerate. Power and strength
under control. Willing to pardon injuries, correct faults.

One who rules his spirit well.
At the start of the sanctification process, the Holy Spirit
will move on to you early, with self-control. The reason
being, we all have our own certain amount of character
flaws operating in our personalities. There are some bad
and negative qualities that have to go.
Our spirits know that some of our fleshly desires are not
right for us and as a result, there will be a tug-of-war
between the two — even a major tug-of-war.
The speaker continued, If you do not have God’s self
control operating through you — you will have very little
victory over such things as bad tempers, judgmental and
critical spirits, an unforgiving spirit, and vices such as
smoking and the abuse of alcohol.
But if you are willing to yield to Him, and allow Him to
start to work all 9 of these fruits into your personality —
then you will find yourself starting to grow in ways and in
areas that you never thought were possible in this life.
Towards the end of his discussion, Vini Cadiz
emphasized, Sanctification provides a practical guide for
Christian living, Christians are not meant to be perfect
but are meant to make incremental progress in their
walk with God, Still we vigorously strive for the high goal
of holiness exemplified by Jesus. So, don’t feel
discouraged, because less-than perfect performance is in
fact quite normal.
In addition to the 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit, the Bible also
tells us that there are 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit.
1Corinthians 12: 4-11, says “There are different gifts of
the Spirit but the same Spirit; there are different
ministries but the same Lord; there are different works
but the same God who accomplishes all of them in every
one. To each person the manifestation of the Holy Spirit
is given for the common good.
To one the Spirit gives wisdom in discourse; to another
the power to express knowledge; Through the same
spirit one receives faith; by the same Spirit, another is
given the gift of healing, and still another miraculous
powers.
Prophecy is given to one, to another the power to
distinguish one spirit from another; one receives the gift
of tongues, another that of interpreting tongues. But it is
one and the same Spirit who produces all these gifts,
distributing them to each as he will.” (1 Corinthians 12:4-
11)
With the 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit and the 9 gifts of the
Holy Spirit, and allowing God to work on a believer with
both sets of these fruits and gifts — these will manifest
as the power gifts of the Holy Spirit. 

“THE HOLY MONTH OF JUNE”
We have been subscribing to a particular Catholic
Scripture Diary for almost seven years now as our guide
for our Daily scripture readings and reflections. We have
come to like and prefer this book than the others because
this book comes very handy, especially when we travel
out of town or when one of us is away and the place has
no internet connection. Because of this, we can still do our
daily readings simultaneously without the hassle of sifting
through the Bible pages back and forth and also because
the readings are arranged completely in a day to day basis
throughout the quarter of a month. This book also serves
as one of our references when prepare for our assigned
role as Corporate Worship Leaders, as assigned Readers,
doing our WORD in a word sharing circle, or whenever I
am assigned to give Reflection, Teaching or such as this
Article for the June 2019 issue of the Sandigan.
This year, being a first time DCS member entails me to do
a write-up for IN DCS CORNER, and June is my month of
assignment. Being a first-time writer with no particular
background whatsoever in this field is little overwhelming
for me. Truth is, I always tell the Lord “bahala ka po sa
akin, wala po akong alam dito, susunod lang ako sa iyo.’’
In the years that we have been using this Scriptural book,
if my memory serves me right, I have never encountered a
whole Month with so many important or major events that
is to be celebrated every Sunday of the week in a single
month than the June Readings. For me it is a first. What
am I talking about?
WEEK 1. ‘’SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION OF THE
LORD JESUS’’
This holy event marks the first ACTS OF THE APOSTLES
as our first reading says Acts chapter1: verse1-11.
First, let us know who wrote the Acts of the Apostles or
now simply called Acts.
Bible Scholars are almost certain that Luke wrote the
‘’ACTS.’’
In the first readings, it is worthy to note that a certain man
called ‘’THEOPHILUS’’ was mentioned on the first part of
the narrative, and one might ask who is the man?
Bible scholars say they do not know, because he was not

properly identified, but the name ‘’THEOPHILUS’’ literally
means ‘’loved by God’’ or ‘’friend of God’’ that lead others
to believe that ‘’THEOPHILUS’’ is a generic title that
applies to ALL Christians. Others contest that Theophilus
is a high ranking Roman official who supported the cause
of the Christians, as mentioned in ‘’LUKE 1:3 that says, In
my turn, after carefully going over the whole story from the
beginning, have decided to write an ordered account for
you. Theophilus, so that your excellency may learn how
well founded the teaching is that you have received.’’ This
evidence highly supports that Luke wrote the Acts
narratives.
In the latter part of the first reading, it can be considered as
the last conversation of Jesus with his Apostles as
mentioned in Acts 1:8 that say ‘’But you will receive power
when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria
and to the ends of the earth.’’ When he had said this, He
was lifted up and a cloud took Him from their sight.
This incident marks the first Commissioning of his Apostles
to go and preach His name to the ends of the earth.
WEEK 2. “SOLEMNITY OF THE PENTECOST’’
This 2nd Sunday of June, Christians across the world will
celebrate Pentecost. It is generally honored in liturgical
churches (Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, Eastern
Orthodox, etc.) Pentecost may not be as popular as the
Christmas and Easter, though it commemorates a
watershed event in Christian history. In many ways
Pentecost is the first birthday of our Church, the first LSS
weekend wherein the first Baptism in the Spirit happened
when the Holy Spirit descended like a fire and rested on
the heads of Apostles as described and illustrated in
ancient liturgical paintings. This was a Promise fulfilled by
our Lord Jesus before His ascension to heaven and thus
making the Apostles and Mother Mary as the first ever LSS
graduates.
WEEK 3. ‘’SOLEMNITY OF THE HOLY TRINITY’’
The Holy Trinity as we all know is represented by, the
Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit as three personification
in ONE GOD or the FIRST and only GOD.
To easily understand this, first let us all agree that God is
infinitely more complex than we are, that is why He is
GOD.
If we are to use a math equation, it would not be 1+1+1=3,
it should be 1x1x1=1 because God is a Triune God. Thus
‘’TRI’’ means three and ‘’UNITY’’ means one. Therefore,
TRI+UNITY= TRINITY

Have you ever wondered why the TRIANGLE shape is the
most strong and durable of all geometric shapes?
WEEK 4. “SOLEMNITY OF THE BODY AND BLOOD
OF CHRIST”
The ‘’THE LAST SUPPER’’ of which Jesus had with His
Apostles is considered as the first Eucharistic origin of the
present-day Holy Eucharist or Mass that we now
celebrate and partake of everyday in commemoration of
his death, sacrifice and resurrection.
The Body and Blood of Christ may refer to the
TRANSUBSTANTIATION, a doctrine of the Catholic
Church, the change of substance by which the Bread and
Wine offered in the sacrifice of the sacrament of the
Eucharist during the Mass, become in reality, the BODY
and BLOOD of Jesus Christ.
In this way, Jesus made this symbol play the central role
for us to receive His Body and Blood regularly for Spiritual
nourishment and gift of providence and not just as His
memorial.
The Breaking of the bread, Blessing, Giving and Feeding
symbolizes the fellowship of all those who believe in Him
gathering as one family (Community of Believers/BLD)
and of sharing His food (His Words/Good news of
salvation) thus accomplishing the purpose of proclaiming
His Holy name to all the people to the ends of the earth.
Matthew 26 contains one of the most well-known events
in human history and certainly the most famous meal ever
eaten, the LAST SUPPER.
June 24 ‘’SOLEMNITY OF THE NATIVITY OF JOHN
THE BAPTIST’’
“You, child, will be called prophet of the Most High, for you
will go before the Lord to prepare His way.” Luke1:76
John the Baptist is considered a miracle baby born to
parent way beyond their childbearing years. This shows

the limitless power of GOD in fulfilling His will that
something that is impossible is not an obstacle for Him.
Perhaps, this is God’s reminder to us that He is in
control, not us.
The sole biblical account of the birth of John the Baptist
comes from the Gospel of Luke. John’s father Zechariah
was a Jewish priest when Archangel Gabriel appeared to
him and announced that he and Elizabeth would give
birth to a child and they would name him John.
However, because Zechariah did not believe the
message, he was rendered speechless until the time of
John’s birth. At that time, his relatives wanted to name
the child after his father, and Zechariah wrote, “His name
is John” whereupon he recovered his ability to speak.
Following Zechariah’s OBEDIENCE to the command of
God, he (John) was given the gift of “Prophecy and
foretold the Future Ministry of Jesus.”
June 28 ‘’SOLEMNITY OF THE SACRED HEART OF
JESUS’’ The Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus
(Sollemnitas Sacratissimi Cordis lesu) falls 19 days after
the Pentecost. This devotion to the Sacred Heart is one
of the most widely practiced and well-known Roman
Catholic devotions, taking Jesus Christ’s physical heart
as the representation of “His Divine love for Humanity.”
SIGNIFICANCE behind the Crown of thorns in
Jesus’s Heart. When Adam & Eve sinned against God
in the garden of Eden, the seeds were sowed for Thorns
and Thistles. It is the same thorns that pierced the head
of our dear Lord and Savior. It did not come from God but
from the sins of our early parents and the devil.
Many of us have watched the “Passion of the Cross”
when the Roman soldiers put a crown of thorns on
Jesus’s head. Were your heart not filled with deep sorrow
and sadness? It was our sins that pierced the head of
Jesus but His HEART felt most all the pain of our sins.
“I went through this for you, I love you, keep the Faith,
Believe and Follow me with all you got and one day I will
give you a new Crown of Life and Righteousness.”
The HOLY Month of June closes with the ‘’SOLEMNITY
OF PETER AND PAUL, APOSTLES’’ on the 29th.
The Solemnity is a liturgical feast in honor of the
martyrdom in Rome of the Apostles Peter (Simon,
Cephas) and Paul (Saul). The celebration is of ancient
origin, the date selected being the anniversary of either
their death or the translation of their relics.

Jews (the first Pope with two keys Saltire, inverted cross,
crowing cock, fish & two swords) and Saint Paul as the
Apostle for the Gentiles (wrote the 14 letters, symbolizes
a Book and Sword, 3 fountains, serpent and fire, 12
scrolls and the Armor of God).
The two are venerated as the roots in the very foundation
of the Church. They are the solid rock on which the
Church is built. To them Rome owes her true greatness,
for it was under God’s providential guidance that they
were led to make the capital of the empire, sanctified by
their martyrdom, the center of Christian world where
should radiate the preaching of the Gospel.

of the BLD Healing and Counseling Ministry, this move to
promote youth mental health and interventions, is just
the tip of the huge underlying task. Ultimately, there is a
need to engage the support of the community and
further on, to gain a larger public support.

Jesus’s Ascension into Heaven, where He was shown
as being lifted by a cloud, and with us His believers and
followers being depicted as looking up in the sky
wondering, what now?
Though He has ascended to heaven, He affirms love and
promises to us that he will not leave us abandoned in our
spiritual journey.
And, it is worthy to note that the Holy Month of June ends
with what a simple fisherman and a Christian persecutor
can do to repay the Goodness, Kindness, Love and
Sacrifice of our Lord if only we: Obey, Follow and
Persevere in proclaiming the name of our Lord Jesus.

Pastoral Cluster  Youth Ministry - June 8 & 9 - the Youth Light in
the Spirit Seminar (YLSS) will be held at the University of the
Philippines Open University, CCDL Bldg. Fr. Russel Habito will serve
as the Spiritual Director. YLSS sharers and team will join the
Eucharistic Celebration on June 6. Donors and sponsors of food

Singles Ministry holds their Word Sharing Circle every 2nd & 4th
Saturday of the month. The members held their Singles Happy Hour
last 01 June 2019. The Ministry will have a Fellowship/Summer outing
in Calatagan or Pandan Lake on June 15. Starting July 2019, one
prayer meeting/WSC will be held in Cabuyao (venue: Mata’s
