If Shylock was Chief

Seattle
I am glad that `tis yonder sky hath wept
tears of compassion upon mine people for
centuries untold. This day is fair unlike you
Christians, why tomorrow is overcast with
thieving clouds. Thou may be assured that
my words are like the stars that will never
change. Mine own w'rds sayeth that thrift is
blessing if men like thou steal it not and if
thou still stand within the eye of granted
honour be assured that mine own people
shall accept thy proposition.
The White Chief says that Big Chief at
Washington sends us greetings of friendship
and goodwill. Why, this were kindness, for
we know he hath little need of our friendship
in return. Thou people are many like the
Christian fools and mine people are few like
the faithful Jews. The most wondrous and I

presume valorous white chief reasons with
us , by declaring that he wishes to buy our
land but is willing to allow us enough to live
the Nazarite.
Yes, thy idea does appear wise for we need
not an extensive land. Thou hath hindered
and scorned my nation, cooled mine friend
and heated mine enemies, and whats thy
reason? We art Jews.Hath not a Jew eyes?
Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions,
senses, affections, passions? Fed with the
same food, hurt with the same weapons,
subject to the same diseases, healed by the
same means, warmed and cooled by the
same winter and summer as a Christian is?
If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle
us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we
not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not
revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we
will resemble you in that. If a Jew wrong a
Christian, what is his humility? Revenge. If a
Christian wrong a Jew, what should his
sufferance be by Christian example? Why,
revenge. The villainy you teach me I will

execute—and it shall go hard but I will
better the instruction if thou keep not thy
side of the proposition.
There hath been a time when we Jews
outnumbered thee Christians but that time
long since hath passed away with the
greatness of mine tribe that art now a
mournful memory. I will not dwell over, nor
mourn over the untimely decay of mine own
tribe, nor reproach the foolish Christians
with hastening it, as thou friends shall not
accept the censure.
