Overfishing

! My part in the group project is to research about overfishing

! The purpose of this power point slide is to demonstrate my understanding
What I already knew

! Meat production cause a lot of pollution

! Too many fish get caught for food, threaten to make the marine ecosystem to collapse.
! Fish’s population cannot keep up with all of the overfishing
! A lot of endanger species or just other species get kill by fishing net called bi-kill.
! Many fishermen that took too much fish blame poverty to continue their destructive behavior.
! Many death zones in the ocean are cause by pollution that runoff from the land into the ocean.
! The marine ecosystem is on the verge of complete destruction because of climate change, pollution,
and habitat destruction. But by adding overfishing its make the matter even worse.
Even though I already knew a few facts about the overfishing, after I done my
research, I found more and more information that only make it feels like the situation
is hopeless. I feels that the problem is so big and on daily basis we are more of the
major contributor to the problem.
The important of Ocean

! 800 millions people rely on the ocean as their main source to

survive, some source even claim the number into the billion!
! Ocean can provide vast resources if we manage its correctly.
How serious is it?

! After the research I found a very interesting and

alarming facts that:
! In 2003, scientists stated that only 10 percent of the
large fish in the ocean is left when compare to their
population in pre-industrialize age.
! A study shown that if we continue this trend on the
ocean, by 2048 the entire marine population would be
collapsed .
Numbers

61% 29% 10%

Of all fish are
Of all fish are Of all fish are
fully fished
overfished underfished
By catch

! Bycatch is the biggest threat to endangered marine species.

! 40% of all the fish catch from the ocean is by catch and wasted, that’s 38 million ton of fish
per year, many of them are rare and large fish. This include:
! 300,000 small whales and dolphins
! 250,000 endangered loggerhead turtles and critically endangered leatherback turtles
! 300,000 seabirds, including 17 albatross species
Why we should not eat shrimp

! Shrimp create the most by catch due to the

method we catch shrimp.
! In order to catch shrimp we need to use a net
that cause a lot of bycatch
! This is bad since when people eat shrimp,
they consume in large quantities, which
produce incredible amount of by catch.
Illegal Fishing

! I learned that illegal fishing is very common in the industry.

! It is highly profitable and therefore a lot fishermen took the fish out of the ocean
unsustainably.
! The industry worth billions of dollar.
Protected Areas

! Since the ocean are so important I thought a lot of the ocean would be protected.
! However, after I did my research I found out that only 1.6% of the world is protected.
! The rest is free to be fished no matter the quantities.
Farm Fish

! I thought that farm fish would help the problem but

after some research I learned that most farm fish
that we eat are carnivore.
! Which mean we still have to fish a lot of small fish to
feed those fish, and that’s a of of fish.
(literally)
How to help

! Mussel can help released the tension out of the ocean, as it is a filter feeder, we can farm a
lot of them without the need to much resources.
! Eating small fish will help, since the big fish that we eat require a lot of food to farm, which is
the main contributor to removal of the fish in the ocean.
! We can create more protected area to help the fishes.
Planning the booklet

! After I finished my research I start to work on the booklet.

! I decided that I would use 2 pages in the booklet.
! One with information and facts
! Another one with solution
Planning the booklet

! This may not seem much but I tried to condense the information into more confine, so it
could be easily understand
! Its also due to the fact that the booklet is in A5 size, so all of the information, pictures and
any other decoration must fit in there.
Making the booklet

! When we are ready to create the booklet, I condense the information and put it in a small
word box.
! Then I print it along with the pictures.
! I also print out some source of pattern to be use as background wallpaper, so the pages
does not look bland.
Making the booklet

! Then I glue all of them together.

! And its done, my pages is done, and my part in the booklet is done.
! Then brink ask me to do the citation.
! So I gather other’s APA citation and put it in the right format, then I print it out as the final pieces of
the booklet.
What would I do?

! I will stop eating big fish like salmon and tuna.

! I will stop eating shrimp
! I would encourage other that they should stop
wanting big fish, if they still wish to eat seafood, I’ll
tell them to eat mussel or other smaller fish.
