Data Analysis – Spring 2018

<M/W 11AM>
Final Project
5/8/18
After compiling all the data together, the demographic statistics of the sample has been
listed below. There are 60% females and 40% males in the sample. The average age of the
sample is 44.82 years old. The average age for males is 44.72 years old and 44.89 years old for
females. The average number of hours of sleep per night is 7.51 hours. Males slept an average of
7.82 hours per night and females slept an average of 7.31 hours per night. The average
depression score is 13.67. Males had an average depression score of 12.65 and females had an
average of 14.36.

Research Question:
An ANOVA analysis was conducted to examine if the average number of drinks a person has per
day varies based on depression severity (minimal/mild, moderate, moderate/severe). This
analysis was performed at =0.05.

Methodology: The variables are DRINKS and DEPRESSSEVERE from the “Final Project
DataSet.sav” data. The continuous variable is DRINKS and the nominal variable
DESPRESSEVERE has three categories: minimal/mild, moderate, and moderate/severe. Given
the levels of measurement of the variables used, an ANOVA test was conducted.

Hypotheses:

Null Hypothesis (H0): There is no significant difference in average number of drinks a person
has per day based on their depression severity.

Research Hypothesis (H1): There is a significant difference in average number of drinks a person
has per day based on their depression severity.

Results:

Mean number of drinks for Minimal/Mild: 0.98 drinks

Mean number of drinks for Moderate: 2.39 drinks
Mean number of drinks for Moderate/Severe: 4.85 drinks
F = 130.868
dfB = 2
dfW = 147
p = 0.000

Since p (0.000) <  (0.05), we will reject H0 and accept H1. Thus, there is a significant difference
between the means of the 3 depression scores.

Minimal/Mild and Moderate depression scores are significantly different in their average daily
number of drinks. (p = 0.000)

Minimal/Mild and Moderate/Severe depression scores are significantly different in their average
daily number of drinks. (p = 0.000)

Moderate and Moderate/Severe depression scores are significantly different in their average
daily number of drinks. (p = 0.000)

Conclusion:

The group means indicate that people with minimal/mild depression scores (0.98) have a
significantly different daily average drink consumption than those with moderate depression
scores. (2.39). The group means also indicate that people with moderate depression scores
(2.39) have a significantly different daily average drink consumption than those with
moderate/severe depression scores (4.85). Lastly, the group means indicate that people with
moderate/severe depression scores (4.85) have a significantly different daily average drink
consumption than those with minimal/mild depression scores (0.98). From this we can conclude
that there is a disparity in the mean level of depression scores and the average number of drinks a
person consumes per day. The more drinks had per day increases as depression severity
increases.

Research Question:
An ANOVA analysis was conducted to examine if the average number of nightmares a person
remembers per week varies based on depression (minimal/mild, moderate, moderate/severe).
This analysis was performed at =0.05.

Methodology: The variables are NIGHTMARE and DESPRESSSEVERE from the “Final
Project Dataset.sav” data. The continuous variable is NIGHTMARE and the nominal variable
DEPRESSSEVERE has three categories: minimal/mild, moderate, moderate/severe. Given the
levels of measurement of the variables used, an ANOVA test was conducted.
Hypotheses:

Null Hypothesis (H0): There is no significant difference in the average number of nightmares a
person remembers per week based on their depression severity.

Research Hypothesis (H1): There is a significant difference in the average numbers of nightmares
a person remembers per week based on their depression severity.

Results:

Mean number of nightmares remembered per week for Minimal/Mild: 1.43 nightmares
Mean number of nightmares remembered per week Moderate: 2.50 nightmares
Mean number of nightmares remembered per week for Moderate/Severe: 4.71 nightmares

F = 77.285
dfB = 2
dfW = 147
p = 0.000

Since p (0.000) < (0.05), we will reject H0 and accept H1. Thus, there is a significant difference
between the means of the 3 depression scores.

Minimal/Mild and Moderate depression scores are significantly different in their average number
of nightmares remembered per week. (p = 0.000)

Minimal/Mild and Moderate/Severe depression scores are significantly different in their average
number of nightmares remembered per week. (p = 0.000)

Moderate and Moderate/Severe depression scores are significantly different in their average
number of nightmares remembered per week. (p = 0.000)

Conclusion:

The group means indicate that people with minimal/mild depression scores (1.43) have a
significantly different average number of nightmares remembered per week than those with
moderate depression scores. (2.50). The group means also indicate that people with moderate
depression scores (2.50) have a significantly different average number of nightmares
remembered per week than those with moderate/severe depression scores (4.71). Lastly, the
group means indicate that people with moderate/severe depression scores (4.71) have a
significantly different average number of nightmares remembered per week than those with
minimal/mild depression scores (1.43). From this we can conclude that there is a disparity in the
mean level of depression scores and the average number of nightmares remembered per week.
The more nightmares remembered per week increases as depression severity increases.
