Note: For additional information about the propulsion pump, refer to System Operation, "Hydraulic
Schematic (Propel System)".

Propulsion pump (1) is located at the front of the machine and on the left side of the engine. The
engine compartment cover provides access to this pump. The propulsion pump is a hydraulically
controlled, variable displacement, axial piston pump.

The propulsion control lever directs pilot oil into the pump servo piston. The pressure of the pilot oil
moves the servo piston which changes the angle of the swashplate in the pump.

Neutral brake solenoid (2) is located on the front face of the propulsion pump. When this solenoid is
de-energized, the parking brakes are engaged. When the solenoid is energized, the parking brakes are
disengaged.

Charge relief valve (3) and forward relief valve (5) are located on the top face of propulsion pump
(1). The reverse relief valve (not shown) is located on the bottom face of the propulsion pump,
opposite of the forward relief valve. Both the forward relief valve and the forward pressure tap are
installed in port "A2" of the propulsion pump. The reverse relief valve is installed in port "B2" of the
pump.

Charge relief valve (3) limits the pressure in the charge circuit to 2400 ± 150 kPa (348 ± 22 psi) with
the engine at high idle. The charge relief valve is adjustable. Charge pressure can be measured at the
charge pressure tap, located downstream of the charge filter.

Forward relief valve (5) and the reverse relief valve (not shown) act as makeup valves and main relief
valves. The forward and reverse relief valves limit the maximum pressure in the system to 35000 ±
2500 kPa (5080 ± 363 psi). These relief valve cartridges are not adjustable.

Forward pressure can be measured at forward pressure tap (4). This tap is located on top of forward
relief valve (5). Reverse pressure can be measured at reverse pressure tap (6). The reverse pressure
tap is installed in port "B1" of propulsion pump (1).

(8) Swashplate

Engine rotation turns the pump drive shaft, which then rotates the barrel assembly. The pistons in the
propulsion pump rotate with the barrel assembly. The piston slipper feet allow the pistons to follow
the angle of the swashplate.

The servo piston controls the angle of the swashplate. When the propulsion lever is in the NEUTRAL
position, both sides of the servo piston are open to the tank. The servo piston springs center the servo
piston, and the swashplate remains at a minimum angle. With the swashplate at a minimum angle, the
pistons do not move in and out of the barrel assembly. Therefore, the pump does not generate oil
flow.

If pressure in the charge circuit increases to 2400 ± 150 kPa (348 ± 22 psi), the oil pressure
overcomes the spring force and the charge relief valve opens. This action directs excess charge flow
into the pump case.

(8) Swashplate

When the propulsion lever is moved out of the NEUTRAL position, charge pressure is directed into
one end of the servo piston and the other end of the piston is open to the hydraulic tank. The pressure
in the servo piston causes the piston to move. The angle of the swashplate changes proportionally to
the position of the propulsion lever.

As the input shaft rotates, the slipper feet follow the angle of the swashplate. This causes the pistons
to move in and out of the barrel assembly. As the pistons move in, oil in the low pressure circuit is
drawn into the piston chamber through the port plate. Pump rotation forces the oil in the piston
chamber out of the high pressure port.

When the pump swashplate is at zero angle, internal leakage causes some of the oil in the closed
circuit lines to flow to the pump case. The system is designed to allow a small amount of leakage into
the case in order to clean the oil in the closed circuit lines. This system is also designed to cool the oil
in the closed circuit lines.

Oil in the closed circuit lines acts in conjunction with the conical springs in the relief valve cartridges.
If the pressure in either closed circuit line falls below charge pressure, charge oil that is acting against
the corresponding makeup valve unseats the makeup valve poppet. As the makeup valve poppet
opens, charge oil enters the corresponding circuit. The charge circuit maintains pressure in the
propulsion pump in order to keep the barrel assembly full of oil. The charge circuit maintains
pressure in the propulsion pump and the charge circuit lubricates the pump components.

(10) Main relief spring

(11) Plunger

(12) Makeup valve poppet

Oil in the high pressure circuit acts against the seat of the high pressure relief valve in the relief valve
cartridge. If the pressure in the high pressure circuit increases to 35000 ± 2500 kPa (5080 ± 363 psi),
the oil acting against the valve seat compresses the main relief spring. This action unseats the
plunger, and oil from the high pressure circuit is allowed to flow into the charge circuit.

Oil in the low pressure circuit acts in conjunction with the conical spring in the relief valve cartridge,
while charge oil acts on the lower makeup valve poppet. If the combined force from the pressure in
the low pressure circuit and the conical spring falls below charge pressure, the lower makeup valve
poppet opens. This action allows charge oil to open the makeup valve poppet, and charge oil is
directed into the low pressure circuit.

When combined force from the pressure in the low pressure circuit and the conical spring becomes
greater than the charge pressure, the makeup valve poppet seats, and charge oil no longer flows into
the low pressure circuit.
