।।1.1.1।।.Usan, being desirous of ; ha and vai (eivalent to-once upon a time) are two
indeclinable particles, recalling to mind what happened before. Vajasrava in he whose
sravah, fame, is conseent on the giving of vajam, food. Or it is a proper name. His son,
Vajasravasa, being desirous of the fruit of the sacrifice, performed the Visvajit sacrifice in
which all is given away. In that sacrifice, he dadau, gave away; sarvevedasam, all (his)
wealth. Tasya, of him, of that performer of sacrifice; asa, there was; ha, as the story goes;
naciketa nama putrah, a son named Naciketa.

।। 1.1.1।।. Usan- desirous (of heavenly rewards); Vajasravasah-‘Vaja’ means food, ‘Srava’
means fame. It literally means a person who has attained fame by making charitable gift of
food. Or it may be a proper name. The son of Vajasrava is Vajasravasah. Vajasravasah
performed the visvajit sacrifice. ‘Visvajit’ is a kind of sacrifice in which the performer is
reired to make a gift of all his possessions and wealth. This sacarifice was generally
performed by kings when they returned after conering kingdoms (Dugvijaya). It could also
be performed by Brahmanas.

।।1.1.1।। Once upon a time, the son of Vajasrava, being desirous of fruit, gave away
everything. He had, as the story goes, a son named Naciketa.

।।1.1.1।।. Once, desirous of heaven, the son of Vajasrava (Gautama) gave (in a sacrifice) all
that he possessed. He had a son Nachiketas by name.
