Field hockey

Grade Level

6th - 8th

Standards​​:

The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry and the structures of the

discipline(s) he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of

subject matter meaningful for students.

The teacher understands how to develop and provide supportive learning environments for his or

her students. Teachers apply this understanding to create activities that facilitate both individual

and collaborative learning

Objective​​:

Student Will work effectively in a team, and apply individual knowledge and skills to compete

against the opposing team. Students will learn the basic rules of hockey and basic skills such as

stick handling, wrist shot and face off.

Materials/ Equipment
Teacher materials​​ - stopwatch, whistle, and clipboard with pen and paper.

Class material​​ - Hockey goal, cones, street puck, hockey sticks and colors jerseys, hockey play

book explaining rules and regulations hand out book.

Suggested team and group size:

5-7 students.

Procedures​​:

Teacher - Show students how to maneuver puck, also how to do a figure 8. This procedure will

take approximately 50 minutes to teach and have all students do and will be done during the first

class. During day to students will get into teams and demonstrate their skills in a live game.

Stickhandle wrist shot - Intermediate

Set up

- Cones 3 feet apart and the 5th cone 6 feet away from the 4th

Movemen​​t

- Stickhandle through the 4 cones and end with a wrist shot on goal

- Look over shoulder to find the net and opening before rounding the last cone

- Forehand wrist shot 20x

- Backhand wrist 20x

Figure Eights

Set up

- (2) cones 3 feet apart with a ball in the middle


Movement

- Students stick handles and carries the ball around the cones following the arrows.

- This allows the students to work on their forehand and backhand while moving around

stationary objects

Teams

- Students will get into teams of five to seven depending on the class size.

- Students will choose a captain who will also be the goalie

- Students will have 15 min. Per game

- Students will then have a face to start game

Closure

Students will demonstrate and be scored on the first objective they learned which was to

correctly maneuver puck through cones and use the wrist shout method to score a goal. Students

will line up and go one by one demonstrating their skill in this activity with a 30 second time

limit.

Students will close out lesson by showing me that they understand the rules and needed

skills in a live game. I will watch students closely during the game but students will be in charge

of calling fouls and misconduct that prove they understand the rules and regulations of the game.
