Exercise 8

A: Hello! How are you?

B: I’m fine. It’s good to speak to you. Are you at home or at school?
A: I’m at school. It’s lunch time, and my lessons start at two o’clock. I’m in the
classroom with my friends. Where are you?
B: I’m at home. We don’t have school today. It’s a holiday!
A: Lucky you! In my country, we don’t have any holiday in June. Our holiday is
in July and August.
B: We have holidays then too!
A: Wow! Are you in the garden?
B: No. We don’t have a big garden. I’m in my room and I’m on the computer. I
play computer games in my free time.
A: I play computer games too. I like the new Fantasy World game. My sister has
a lot of games. I don’t buy them. I play her games!
B: What about sports? I play tennis on Saturdays and football on Mondays.
A: I don’t play sport. I watch it on TV. I like watching football. Have you got a
sister?
B: No, but I’ve got two brothers. They’re very good at football. Mike is 17 and he
plays football in London. Sometimes he’s on TV.
A: That’s good! I’d like to meet him!
B: Come to England and stay with me and then you can meet him. You can come
in August. We can have a really good time!
A: Thanks. I’d like to come and stay with you! Oh, it’s two o’clock. Now I have a
biology lesson. Send me an email on your computer.
B: OK. My mum can speak to your mum about the holiday.
A: Great! Oh, here’s the teacher. ‘Bye!!

Exercise 8

1
A: Hi! I think I’m late. What’s the time?
B: I’m not sure. Why? What’s the problem?
A: It’s my first tennis lesson today at 4.45, and I don’t want to miss it.
B: You’re OK. Look – my mobile phone shows it’s 4.30. There’s lots of time. It’s
only five minutes from here to the sports centre.
A: That’s true. Thanks! See you later.

2
A: Do you do a lot of sports?
B: Not really, but my brother does. He’s good at basketball and tennis.
A: Does he play football?
B: No, but he watches it on TV. I hate sport on TV!
A: Me too. It’s really boring.

3
A: Oh – you’ve got a new computer! Is it an expensive one?
B: No, it isn’t mine. It’s my dad’s. I’m using it today.
A: Is it a good one?
B: Not really. It’s quite old. It’s OK for doing my homework, but I don’t go
online because it’s so slow!
A: Has it got some good games on it?
B: Well – yes, there’s a chess game, but I don’t know how to play it!
A: Oh, I can teach you that.

4
A: I’m bored. I want to start a new hobby.
B: What do you want to do?
A: You go to the photo club, don’t you? Is it good?
B: Yes. We walk in the countryside and take photos. Then we look at them. But
you’re good at sports. You could join the sports club.
A: But I want to do something new. Not photography, though. Perhaps I can learn
a musical instrument.
B: My sister’s got an old guitar. You can borrow that if you want.
A: That’s a good idea. Thanks!

A: Hi! It’s good to hear from you! How are you?

B: Everything’s great. We’re in our new house now, and I love it!
A: It’s very exciting! Tell me about the house. Is it new? Is it old? Is it big?
B: OK, OK, slow down! It’s a modern house, but it’s really pretty. It’s detached,
so we haven’t got people right next to us.
A: Good – so you can have noisy parties!
B: Great idea! And my bedroom is big too.
A: Are you in the town or in the country?
B: We aren’t in the town, but we’re quite near. At the moment, I’m sitting in my
room and I’m looking through the window. There are lots of trees, and I can
see a farm too!
A: Wow! I’m sure your dog loves it!
B: Yes he does. We’ve got a beautiful garden too. There’s a table and chairs
under a big tree.
A: It’s good for a barbecue then?
B: Yes. Mum and Dad want to have a barbecue for some friends on Friday.
Would you like to come? We can go into town and do some shopping before
the barbecue.
A: Brilliant! Oh – email me your address. I don’t know where you are.
B: I can’t use my computer at the moment. It’s still in a box! But I can send you a
text message. It’s easy to find the house. There’s a bus stop in front of us!
A: That’s great. Got to go now. Mum wants me to tidy up my room! See you at
the weekend!

Exercise 8

1
A: Oh, no. It’s Wednesday, and I hate Wednesdays!
B: Do you have horrible subjects on Wednesdays?
A: Not all of them are horrible. We have sports, and that’s great, but in the
afternoon we have two hours of chemistry. I can’t do it. I always get things
wrong.
B: But you’re really good at biology. You get fantastic marks in tests!
A: That’s different. I like that! And after chemistry, we have Spanish, and I can
never remember the new words. It’s OK for you – you always do well in
language lessons.
B: Write down the vocabulary and learn it. That’s the secret!

2
A: Oh, nice! I like this photo of your room. You’ve got some good posters.
B: Thanks. Yes – Lady Gaga is my favourite singer at the moment. Do you have
posters of singers or bands in your room?
A: No, my brother does, but I’ve got holiday posters.
B: That’s right – you really like London. You go all the time.
A: Yeah, I like London a lot, but I prefer Paris. I’ve got a poster of it on my wall.
We go nearly every month for a weekend.
B: Lucky you. Lady Gaga has a concert in Paris next month. Perhaps ...

3
A: Good to see you, Helen. Do you play tennis for the school?
B: Yes, I do. Why do you want to know? Do you want to start playing with us?
We have practice on Mondays and Fridays.
A: No, I play football on Fridays. It’s my dad. He wants to see a match.
B: OK. Our next match is on Saturday. Perhaps he can come then.
A: That’s a good idea. I can come too. I haven’t got a match on Saturday this
week.
B: Great. See you then.

4
A: It’s your birthday soon, isn’t it?
B: Yes! It’s on Saturday. Can you come to the party?
A: I’d love to. Is it at the restaurant like last time?
B: No, the restaurant is busy this year. I’m inviting a lot of people, so I’m having
the party at a hotel. Our house is very small.
A: That’s a good idea! I’d like to have a party at a hotel. What time does it start?
B: Come to my house first, and we can take you. Come about 7.30. Is that OK?
A: Great. See you on Saturday.

Exercise 8

A: Good morning. You’re Mark, is that right?

B: Yes, Mark Jones.
A: And you’re here because you’d like to work for us in the summer.
B: Yes, I would.
A: So, what are you doing at the moment, Mark?
B: Well, I’m still at school. I’m taking my exams at the moment and then I’m
going to university to study sports training.
A: And in the future?
B: I want to be a sports teacher at a school.
A: And what sports do you do, Mark?
B: I’m a cyclist, but I can also swim, play football and do judo. I love all sports!
A: That’s excellent. We have the only indoor cycling track in the city! OK, about
the job. As you know, here at Sandalwood Sports Centre, we have sports
training sessions every summer for school children. They arrive at 8.30 in the
morning and then stay with us all day until 5.30 in the afternoon. Their parents
pay a lot of money, so we have to train them well. You don’t have to teach all
the sports because we have a lot of trainers, but you can do the cycling and
swimming and judo, if that’s OK?
B: That’s great. It’s good practice for me before I go to university.
A: Do you cycle in competitions, Mark?
B: Yes, I’m National Junior Champion at the moment. But I don’t have any more
competitions before October, so I can be here every day.
A: Good! I think you’re just the person we are looking for.
B: Thank you very much.
A: We have a special training day for new people on July 28th. Can you be there?
We show you around the centre and give you safety training.
B: Yes, that’s very important. I can be there. Do I have to bring anything?
A: Bring your swimming costume and tennis racket. Oh yes, and your bike. I
want to see you ride!

Exercise 8

A:
We don’t often go out to restaurants. They’re very expensive these days, and often the
food isn’t very good. You pay £20 for a few potatoes and a small piece of fish with
lots and lots of salad! I don’t like salad very much. The plate looks pretty with all the
red tomatoes and things, but it isn’t real food!

B:
My husband and I often go out at the weekend. Sometimes we go to the cinema, and
it’s nice to go for a meal before the film. We don’t go to these new restaurants where
they put lots of different things on the plate! We like Italian restaurants and usually
eat pasta or pizza.

C:
I usually eat out once a week with two friends, and we choose a different restaurant
each week. We like good food and we like to go to the expensive restaurants with
famous chefs. They are very artistic! And the food is beautiful. It’s good to eat too. I
also like places with polite waiters and interesting furniture and pictures. It’s like a
hobby for me! Sometimes we travel for an hour to find a good restaurant!

D:
I’m still at school, but I have a part-time job, so I get some money each week. I like to
see my friends on Saturdays, and sometimes we go shopping and have lunch out. But
it’s nothing special. Just a burger bar or a fish and chip restaurant! They’re cheap, and
it’s easy to get a table because everyone’s in and out quickly.

Exercise 8

A: Hi, Kathy! Good to see you. Were you on holiday last week? You weren’t in
class.
B: Yes. I went to New York with my mum and dad, and my sister, Julie. Dad had
some free tickets from his work!
A: Wow! How long were you there?
B: Just four days. Dad couldn’t stay very long because he had to go back to work,
and I have tests next week. I’m happy the school allowed me to go.
A: Was New York wonderful?
B: Oh yes! It’s the best city in the world! I bought lots of clothes, and we went
sightseeing. We walked through Central Park – it’s very big, you know! We
went on a boat to see the Statue of Liberty – she’s big too! It was a fantastic
holiday. But the trip over there was terrible.
A: Really? What was the problem?
B: Well, first our taxi was late, and then there were lots of cars on the roads. The
journey to the airport was an hour!
A: Oh, no! It’s usually 15 minutes.
B: Then Mum couldn’t find the tickets. They weren’t in her bag, and our plane
was in 15 minutes. Then we saw our taxi driver. He had our tickets in his
hand. Mum left them in the taxi!
A: What a nice taxi driver!
B: Then Dad was angry with Mum because of the tickets. And on the plane, Julie
cried because she couldn’t sit next to the window! It was a very long journey,
and there was a woman with a baby behind me. It cried all the time.
A: Poor you! Was the food on the plane OK?
B: No, it was cold, and the bread was old and hard. No, not a good journey.
A: And the journey home?
B: Wonderful! No babies, good food and a long sleep!

Good evening, everyone. It’s great to see you at the tennis club annual dinner! My
name is Dennis Brown, and I’m the club chairman. First, I want to give you some
information about some social events in the next few months. There’s a lot to do!
On Sunday 1st September, we are having our tennis club picnic, and I hope all of you
can come. It’s for members, their families and their friends, so please bring lots of
people! As usual we are having the picnic near Turner Beach. That is TURNER
beach, on the grass. People usually arrive about 12.30, and we go home at about 5.00.
Please bring some sandwiches and drinks. There is a barbecue on the beach, so bring
some meat to cook if you want – chicken or burgers, and some salad. Obviously we
don’t know about the weather. We hope it’s sunny, but bring umbrellas if the sky is
black! There will be some swimming competitions for the children and also some
beach volleyball for the adults! Perhaps you don’t know how to get to Turner Beach?
Ask my secretary Dave Miles for directions. It’s very easy to find and only takes 30
minutes from here by car.

A: You didn’t come to the cinema last night. We waited ten minutes, but then we
went in.
B: I went to the cinema, but I went to the wrong one! I thought it was the cinema
in the High Street, not at the university!
A: But you know they don’t show old films at the High Street cinema.
B: I didn’t think about it! Anyway, when you didn’t come, I knew it was a
mistake, so I phoned Jacky and we went for a meal at the new restaurant in the
shopping mall.
A: Well, it was a good film!

2
A: Do you want to come on holiday with us this summer? We’re going to Spain.
B: Oh! I’d love to, but I can’t. I’ve got a summer job.
A: That’s great. Where are you working? In the clinic with your dad?
B: No! I was his nursing assistant last year and I didn’t like it! This year I’m
working with Jay, in the garage.
A: Great! Can you repair cars?
B: Well, no. I’m in the office. Mum wanted me to help in the shop, but it isn’t
always good to work with your family!

3
A: I’ve got a problem and I need your help! Are you busy?
B: No. I finished my project an hour ago and now I’m just playing on my
computer. How can I help?
A: It’s my project! I have to write about a Shakespeare play. We studied it in
class last week.
B: What’s the problem?
A: I don’t understand it! It’s Romeo and Juliet and it’s really difficult. Can you
help me?
B: That’s a great play. I saw it at the theatre when I was in London. But I know
what you can do. I’ve got the film of Romeo and Juliet. It’s great. It’s got
Leonardo DiCaprio in it. You can borrow it.
A: What a good idea. Then I can understand the story! Thanks. You’re a star!

Exercise 8

A: Do you think life is very different for today’s teenagers than it was when you
were a teenager?
B: Well! That was a long time ago! But I think it’s true. I wouldn’t like to be a
teenager now. I think it’s very hard for young people.
A: Why do you say that?
B: There are a lot of reasons. The world is a very different place now. There is so
much pressure —you have to do things quickly. When I was young, you
studied hard and then you got a job and had a family. Now it’s not easy to find
a job, is it? Nowadays a lot more people go to university or college than when
I was a teenager, and of course, there are a lot more young people looking for
jobs. Not everyone can find a good job. It’s not rocket science, is it?
A: And is there anything else you ...
B: Yes ... there’s another thing too. There is so much you can buy nowadays. We
see adverts on the TV all the time for new this ... new that ... new clothes, new
gadgets, new cars ... People want these things – they don’t want to be different
from their friends. I feel very sorry for young parents today because children
want everything they see! And that all costs money, so they have to work
harder to get it. Oh dear! But I suppose that’s life. The world changes all the
time and every generation has different problems.
A: Thank you very much.

Exercise 8

Do you have a pet? Many people do. We all love dogs and cats and like to keep them
in our homes. But some people like pets that are a little more unusual! Some people
have spiders or lizards. Some people even keep snakes in their living room or reptiles
(like alligators) in their baths. This can be very dangerous. It can also be against the
law. Now, it is not allowed to bring a lot of these unusual, exotic animals into the
country. There are several reasons for this. One is that some of these animals are very
rare. Another is that the animals should be free to live in the forests and rivers. And a
very important reason is that it is not good for the animals. Sometimes they have to
travel a long way on planes and in cars or trains. They are in very small boxes and
often they die during the journey. But this is big business. People pay a lot of money
for these animals and criminals still bring them into the country. They hide them in
different places and sometimes put too many little animals in the same box without
water or food. It’s my job to find these animals at airports and save them. Then we
arrest the criminals. But we are not only looking for people who are bringing animals
into the country. We are also looking for people who are taking animals out. We have
a lot of rare birds in the UK, and it is important to protect their eggs. Some people
steal these eggs and sell them to buyers in different countries. We have to stop this.

A: Hi! Thank you so much for agreeing to talk to me.

B: No problem! I know it’s a difficult time when teenagers have to decide what
job they want to do in the future.
A: When did you decide to be an actor?
B: Oh, that’s easy. I knew I wanted to be an actor when I was 11 years old.
A: That was very young.
B: Yes – I was in a school play and I loved it. I liked the stage and the costumes
... oh, everything, really. Also my dad liked drama, and I often went to the
theatre with him.
A: But it’s a difficult job to do, isn’t it?
B: Well, first you have to go to a special drama school and you work really hard.
After that, it’s the difficult time because all the students want to get parts in
plays and on TV. So it’s like a big competition!
A: Did you get a lot of work quickly?
B: I was very lucky. I got a part in a TV series, Fleet Street, about a London
newspaper and I was in that series for four years! It was great fun, and I
learned a lot about acting when I did that.
A: Do you like acting on stage in a theatre?
B: Oh, yes! I’ve just finished acting in a Shakespeare play. It was hard work and
it’s quite frightening sometimes, if you forget your words.
A: I forgot my words once in a school play. It was a Greek play, and I had a lot of
things to remember! It was horrible, but my friend helped me. He remembered
them and said them quietly to me!
B: All actors forget their lines sometimes. Don’t worry. The good thing about
film and TV is that if you forget, you can do it again and again.
A: Then they make a programme about those bits, and we can all laugh at you!

I have some good news today! The new Sharp Shopping Centre is going to open on
Saturday 15th September. That’s next Saturday. And we have a day full of fun and
surprises for you all. To start with, famous TV actress Susie Burrows from our
favourite soap opera Dancing Years will be here at 10.30 to open the centre. First, the
director of the centre Bill Banks will give a short speech to welcome everyone, and
then Susie will cut the ribbon. Afterwards, you can talk to Susie, and she will give out
photos of Dancing Years and autographs of the actors. From 11.00, the centre will be
open for business. All the shops will have special bargains and free things to give you.
I will be at The Chocolate Shop! They are going to give free chocolate cakes and bars
to anyone who goes in. There will be a big party in the middle of the centre for
children from 2.00 to 3.30. There will be lots of food – sandwiches and biscuits – and
then the children can play games too. At the far end of the centre, there will be a mini-
concert by a local band called Leather. They will play from 12.30 to 4.00. Don’t miss
them! They’re very good and they have a new album out. It’s called First Leather
Jacket and you can buy it in the new Rolling Records store on the second level of the
centre.

Conversation 1
A: Have you been to the new shopping centre yet? I went on Friday with Anna.
She wanted to get some new shorts.
B: No, I’m going to go on Saturday afternoon. I’ve got tennis in the morning, but
I need to go in and look at some rackets.
A: Don’t bother! The sports shop isn’t that good. Anna didn’t get the shorts
because they were so expensive. I bought some balls because they were half
price, but everything else was more expensive than Smiths Sports in town.
B: OK. That’s good to know. I think I’ll go just to look. See you at school on
Monday. Bye!

Conversation 2
A: Good morning. I hope you slept well. How can I help you?
B: Well, we’d like to change our room, if that’s possible.
A: Of course. May I ask why? Is there a problem?
B: As you know, there are three of us, and the room is a little small for us all. We
have a view of the road, but that’s OK because we’re out most of the day! But
we’d really like a bigger room. Do you have any?
A: Yes, we do. That’s no problem. I can change that for you now. Your new
room will have a view of the sea. And it has a shower, but not a bath. Is that
all right for you?
B: That’s fine. Thank you very much.

Conversation 3
A: Oh, that was terrible! I think I did really badly!
B: I know. I couldn’t answer Question 3. We haven’t studied that, have we?
A: I don’t think so. I couldn’t do it. Oh, wait a moment. Yes, we did it when you
were on holiday, but I never understood it. What about Question 2. Did you
know that one?
B: Yes, that was easy. It was in the first unit of our book. But Question 8 was
impossible.
A: Question 8? There wasn’t a Question 8, was there?
B: Yes, it was on the last page.
A: Oh, no! I didn’t see that!
B: Ooops!

Conversation 4
A: Hi! You’re early. It’s only 10 o’clock.
B: Yeah, I got the 8.30 train. Usually I get the 9 o’clock, but this morning I woke
up early, so here I am!
A: That’s good. Was your journey OK?
B: Hmm. It was a bit busy, and there weren’t many seats, but I found one. I was
next to a woman with a young baby, and she was really noisy, but then she
went to sleep!
A: That’s good. Sometimes the early train is full of school kids, but it’s holiday
time at the moment. I took the bus this morning.
