NEWTON’S LAWS

OF MOTION
• Isaac Newton formulated the laws of motion to
provide conceptual and mathematical foundations
for the interaction among objects on Earth and
beyond.
• The central theme of these laws deals with how
forces affect the state of motion of any object.
Newton’s Laws of Motion
- Are three physical laws that, together, laid the
foundation for classical mechanics
- Laws that describes the relationship between
a body and the forces acting upon it and its
motion in response to those forces
- Law of Inertia, Law of Acceleration and Law of
Interaction
Law of Inertia
• States that an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an
object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted
upon by an unbalanced force.
• Inertia a property of matter by which it continues
in its existing state of rest or uniform motion in a
straight line
Simple Experiment
• Title: Penny on a card experiment
• Materials: A small plastic cup/mug, a card and a coin
• Instructions: Plot a card on top of the glass, put a coin
on top of the card. With a sharp flick, hit the card very
quickly so that the coin will drop to the glass
Law of Acceleration
• States that the acceleration of an object is
directly proportional to the force acting on
the object, and is inversely proportional to
the mass of the object.
• In equation…. F=ma (where F is the force, m
is the mass and a is the acceleration) and SI
Unit is kg∙m/s2 or newton N
Law of Interaction
• States that for every action, there is an equal
and opposite reaction.
• There must be one object that will apply
force; the other object will experience the
applied force.
Activity: Answer the following

1.Suppose a ball of mass 0.60 kg is hit with a

force of 12 N. The acceleration will be:
2.Kara kicked the chair with a mass of 45kg in
a surface for 3m/s2. How much force did
Kara applied to the chair?
