ROBOTICS ASSIGNMENT

WHAT IS ROBOTICS?

Robotics is the industry related to the engineering, construction and operation of robots
– a broad and diverse field related to many commercial industries and consumer uses.
The field of robotics generally involves looking at how any physical constructed
technology system can perform a task or play a role in any interface or new technology.

Ex Machina is a 2014 science fiction psychological thriller film written and directed
by Alex Garland (in his directorial debut) and stars Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander,
and Oscar Isaac. The film follows a programmer who is invited by his CEO to administer
the Turing test to an intelligent humanoid robot.
For my opinion, this movie is obviously allegorical; a fascinating tale about AI, but it is
mainly about manipulation and power. It isn't for those wanting action or spectacular
CGI, the movie is aimed at people who like to think, rather than passively wait to be
entertained. There are themes here not only about AI, but also about surveillance, with
excellent points about how data about us is collected by phone companies, search
engine companies, commercial operating systems makers and so on. The plot seems
simple but isn't, it's extremely clever, with the protagonist playing games, trying to stay
one step ahead of one another.

WHAT ARE THEIR INFLUENCES ON PRESENT ROBOT TECHNOLOGY?

As technology rapidly advances, the role of the robot is changing from that of a tool to a
social entity. Radical technological changes not only have affected the role and notion of
robots, but have also shaped social practices. On the one hand artificial intelligence has
the potential to facilitate the development of robots as emotional and intellectual entities,
and in the future transform them into independent creatures instead of human agents.

The emergence of robotics culture, which is facilitated by the potential of cohabitation

between humans and robots, not only raises issues of robot abilities but of human
vulnerabilities, as well as the ways that robots affect our lives. These future-oriented,
social entities often depict “technological fixes”.
