“Don’t believe what your eyes are telling you. All they show is limitation. Look with your
understanding. Find out what you already know and you will see the way to fly.” This quote is from the
novel of the greatest Richard Bach was published in 1970. By 1972 the novella had sold more than a
million copies. This fable has been adapted into film, ballet, and music. This book falls the whole story of
a seagull named John Livingston who takes courage to be different from the others by having his own
rules. He is described as a lonely seagull that does not care about the customs of the flock but rather
follows his inner desire of gathering more knowledge and skills. He adjusted whole his life to his wish
and that separated him from the flock but on the other hand, it made him perfect. In the book, there
was a part when the seagull tried to make others realize that they are strong and that they should rise
above the ignorance they’ve been living in and become perfect creatures. He told them that they could
be free if they wanted too. That was the collision of limitations of the ones in charge who were not
ready to change or reach knowledge and freedom. The elderly told the seagull that it is not worth being
irresponsible and then he kicked him out of the flock. Seagull lived off of his courage and persistence
while he was alone. Even though he was alone he realized every day that he was free and he did not feel
sorry because of the price he had to pay. Despite the fact that the seagulls kicked him out of the flock he
felt responsible for them and wanted to teach them valuable lessons. His biggest virtue was the ability
to forgive the ones who did him wrong.

This book taught me how to follow my own self not just because that was other’s opinion to be
follow. It doesn’t matter if you’re different from the other people you see as long as you follow your
heart and own self you will be genuinely happy. Don’t limit yourself like how your environment limits
you. This story is about dreams and determination, and you can strive to stand out from the crowd and
be a better person than what you are. Happiness and self-contentment are found on being simply you
not someone else, stand for your own self and that will make you fly higher and higher than the others.
This story is very timeless it’s for all ages and for me as a teenager it is for us to read and read each day
because it will remind us the unconditional happiness we may experience and it will guide us for future
purposes.
