Research Question

Does settling away from one’s primary residence affect a student’s

academic performance?

Research objectives

The study aims to:

-Identify the difficulties of students who settle away from their primary residence

-Assess the reasons for settling away from one’s primary residence

Sample Size technique

The researchers devised survey-questionnaires for the gathering of

qualitative data. The respondents were chosen using the simple random

sampling technique, where in each member of the population had an

equal chance of being selected.

Sample size computation

The researchers used the Cochran formula to determine the sample size.

Since the target population was especially small, the modified Cochran

formula was utilized.

Table 1

STATUS OF F %
RESIDENCY
Lives away from Primary 21 58.33
Residence
Lives in Primary 15 41.67
Residence
TOTAL 36 100

Table 1 shows that most of the respondents live away from their

primary residence, which is precisely what the type of respondents the

study requires. However, it is important to note that the population is a

heterogeneous population, which means that there would be some

respondents that the study would deem insignificant. Therefore, only a

percentage of the total sample size was used in line with the research

objectives.
Table 2

DIFFICULTY F %
EXPERIENCED
Financial Needs 5 23.81
Homesickness 7 33.33
Loneliness 5 23.81
Separation Anxiety 4 19.05
TOTAL 21 100

Table 2 shows that most of the respondents experienced

homesickness when they are currently away from their primary residence,

showing the highest percentage. Furthermore, the data revealed that

separation anxiety was the least experienced by the respondents. Because

of this, the researchers identified Homesickness as the Mode.

Table 3

Reason F %
Family 8 38.10
Scholarships 0 0
Quality of Education 13 61.90
Peer Pressure 0 0
TOTAL 21 100

Table 3 shows that most of the respondents opted to move away

from their primary residence were due to quality of education, having the

highest percentage. The data also showed that none of the respondents
opted to move away because of peer pressure and scholarships. Because

of this, the researchers identified Quality of Education as the Mode.
