2.2 Native Microwave Technology

The core of the ZXMW SR10 S340 solution is ZTE market-leading Native microwave
technology.

With this technology, the microwave carrier supports native IP/Ethernet traffic together
with optional native PDH. Neither traffic type is mapped over the other, while both
dynamically share the same over all bandwidth.

This unique approach allows planning and building optimal hybrid TDM-IP backhaul
networks which make it ideal for any RAN (Radio Access Network) evolution path
selected by the wireless provider. With Native microwave technology, optimal hybrid
TDM-IP backhaul networking - ideal for any RAN evolution path can be achieved.

In addition, Native microwave technology ensures:

• Very low link latency of <0.2 ms @ 400 Mbps.

• Very low overhead mapping for both Ethernet and TDM traffic, to the microwave
radio frame.

• E1/T1 trails are supported based on the integrated E1/T1 cross-connect

• Cross connect capacity is 180 E1/T1 trails

• Cross connect is performed between any two physical or logical interfaces in the
node, including:

− E1/T1 interface

− Radio “VC” (75 “VCs” supported per radio carrier)

− STM1/OC3 MUX VC12

• Each trail is timed independently by the XC

• Cross connect function is performed by the “active” main unit

• In the case of a failure, the backup unit takes over the job of the fault one.(<50 ms
down time).

2.5 Wireless SNCP

The ZXMW SR10 S340 supports an integrated VC trail protection mechanism called
Wireless SNCP (Sub Network Connection Protection).

With Wireless SNCP, a backup VC trail can optionally be defined for each individual VC
trail.

For each backup VC, the following needs to be defined:

• Two “branching points” from the main VC that is protecting.

6 © 2009 ZTE Corporation. All rights reserved. ZTE Confidential Proprietary

ZXMW SR10 S340 Product Description

• A path for the backup VC (typically separate from the path of the main VC that is
protecting).

For each direction of the backup VC, the following is performed independently:

• At the first branching point, duplication of the traffic from main VC to backup VC.

• At the second branching point, selection of the traffic from either main VC or backup
VC.

− Traffic from the backup VC is used if a failure is detected in main VC.

− Switch-over is performed within <50 ms.

Wireless SNCP operation is shown in the following Figure 8

ZXMW SR10 S340 Product Description

2.6 ACM- Adaptive Coding & Modulation

Adaptive Coding and Modulation refers to the automatic adjustment that a wireless
system can make in order to optimize over-the-air transmission and prevent weather-
related fading from causing communication on the link to be disrupted.

ACM employs the highest possible modulation during changing environmental

conditions, which may be from QPSK to 256 QAM.

The benefits of this dynamic feature include:

• Maximized spectral usage

• Increased capacity over a given bandwidth

• 8 modulation/coding work points (up to -3 dB system gain for each point change)

• Supports both Ethernet and E1 traffic.

• Hitless and errorless modulation/coding changes, based on signal quality.

• E1 traffic has priority over Ethernet traffic.

• An integrated QoS mechanism enables intelligent congestion management to

ensure that high priority traffic is not affected during link fading.

• Each E1 is assigned a priority to enable differentiated E1 dropping during severe

link degradation.

Figure 9 Adaptive Coding and Modulation Technology

2.7 XPIC Technology

ZXMW SR10 S340 operates in co-channel dual polarization (CCDP) mode, using the
cross polarization interference canceller (XPIC) algorithm. Two STM-1 signals can be

ZXMW SR10 S340 Product Description

transmitted over a single channel, using vertical and horizontal polarization. This
enables double capacity in the same spectrum bandwidth.

2.8 Integrated Layer-2 Switching

The ZXMW SR10 S340 supports two modes for Ethernet switching:

• Smart Pipe - In this mode, Ethernet switching functionality is disabled and only a
single Ethernet interface is enabled for user traffic. The unit effectively operates as
a point-to-point Ethernet microwave radio.

• Metro Switch - In this mode, Ethernet switching functionality is enabled.

Figure 10 Ethernet switching modes

With the switch activated, the following features are supported:

• Fully non-blocking switching between all line/radio interfaces

• 4k active VLANs

• 8k MAC addresses

• Integrated QoS

• Full RMON/ROM2 statistics per interface

• Ethernet service OAM - 802.1ag/Y.1731

• Ethernet link OAM - 802.3ah

• 802.3ad link aggregation

The ZXMW SR10 S340 is fully MEF-9 and MEF-14 certified for EPL, EVPL and E-LAN
services.

ZXMW SR10 S340 Product Description

2.9 QoS-Aware Dynamic Congestion Management

• Four priority (QoS) queues

• Advanced QoS classifier: 802.1p, VLAN ID, IPv4 / IPv6 (DSCP/TOS/TC).

• Advanced ingress traffic policing/rate-limiting per port / QoS

• Flexible scheduling: Strict Priority, Weighted Round Robin, or hybrid.

• Traffic shaping

• 802.3x flow control (for loss-less) operation

ZTE's Adaptive Modulation has a remarkable synergy with the equipment's built-in Layer
2 Quality of Service mechanism. Since QoS provides priority support for different
classes of service, according to a wide range of criteria (see below) it is possible to
configure the system to discard only low priority packets as conditions deteriorate. The
ZXMW SR10 S340 platform can classify packets according to the most external header,
VLAN 802.1p, TOS / TC - IP precedence and VLAN ID. All classes use 4 levels of
prioritization with user selectable options between strict priority queuing and weighted
fair queuing with user configurable weights.

If the user wishes to rely on external switches QoS, Adaptive Modulation can work with
them via the flow control mechanism supported in the radio.

2.10 Intelligent Ethernet Header Compression

• Improves effective throughput by up to 45%.

• Does not affect user traffic.

6.5 Switching Principle

6.5.1 Theory of Operation

Fast hardware-based switching (50 ms) allows fast recovery from failures and minimizes
the link downtime due to equipment failure.

Using the same hardware for the main and backup links minimizes inventory costs and
simplifies equipment and operation flexibility.

ZXMW SR10 S340 Product Description

A Hot-Standby configuration defines two Indoor Units (IDUs) functioning as active

(primary or master) and standby (secondary or slave) units.

In normal operation, the primary IDU transmits and receives data, while the secondary
IDU only receives data. A protection patch panel connects two IDUs and allows for data
exchange between the units.

Upon failure in an active IDU or a command from the remote side, a Protection Switch
occurs and the standby IDU becomes active.

The system protects the main link from an IDU, ODU unit failure on the local side, the
remote side, or both sides. However, simultaneous failures in all units on the same side
cannot be protected.

6.5.1.1 External Protection (1+1)

External Protection characteristics are as follows:

• External Protection is achieved by using two separate boxes. Each box has its
unique IP address.

• Configuration is allowed only through ‘Active’ IDU. Access to the ‘Active’ IDU is
possible with its unique IP address. Several unique parameters are configurable on
both ‘Active’ and ‘Standby’ IDUs, such as IP address, management VLAN, ODU-Tx-
mute, System Name, and so on.

• When a switchover occurs, and previous ‘Active’ IDU becomes ‘Standby’ IDU, it
should be understood that access to the new ‘Active’ IDU will be done using its IP,
which is obviously different than previous ‘Active’ IDU's IP.

• A Protection Panel is designed to implement E1, SFP and Ethernet splitters.

Customer equipment will be connected to the panel. ‘Active’ & ‘Standby’ units' traffic,
management and wayside ports should also be connected to the panel. If E1 is not
used, it is possible to use Ethernet splitters to FE and SFP (Optical GBE) ports.

• Electrical GBE (10/100/1000) cannot split (not through panel or split cables).

6.5.1.2 Switching Time

The entire switching mechanism time is less than 50 ms.

6.5.1.3 Switch Criteria

The ZXMW SR10 S340 protection mechanism performs a switch from a main unit to a
secondary unit based on a Priority Table. Switchover triggers are described in the
following table, according to their priority (top - highest priority).
