a. Trends
In Television
Movies to television
Sineserye (ABS-CBN) and Sine Novela (GMA) are classic Filipino films made into television series.
Sine serye started at 2005 and Sine Novela started at 2007. Most of these classic films were originally
from comics but were more popular as movies.
Among the pioneers in Sineserye were Panday, Bituing Walang Ningning and Kampanerang Kuba.
However, Panday and Kampanerang Kuba were called as Fantaseryes by ABS-CBN.
Sineseryes were originally aired on primetime but some were aired on Hapontastik.
Other sineseryes of ABS-CBN were Palimos ng Pag-ibig (Vilma Santos and Dina Bonnevie), Hiram na
Mukha, May Minamahal. For the upcoming sineseryes, they will have Burlesk Queen and Bagets.
Later on, GMA produced Sine Novela with with its remake of Kaputol ng Isang Awit (Sharon Cuneta
and Gary V.), Magdusa Ka (Emmy nominated) and Kung Aagawin Mo ang Lahat Sa Akin.
ABS-CBN also produced Sineserye as a special tribute to Ms. Susan Roces, the Susan Roces Cinema
Collection. This includes Maligno, Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara and Florinda.

Print Materials
ABS-CBN released Komiks in 2006 and Precious Hearts Romances in 2009. Komiks is a fantasy drama
series which usually airs on Saturday evening based on Filipino Komiks.
Inday Bote played by Judy Anne Santos was the first episode which was then followed by Machete
and Sandok ni Boninay. Komiks also produced specials such as Mar’s Ravelo, Agimat and the very
successful Pedro Penduko.
Both ABS-CBN and GMA produced full time shows adopted from Komiks. Agua Bendita, Momay and
Panday for ABSCBN; Darna, Captain Barbell and Bakekang for GMA.
Precious Heart Romances presents is an adaptation of the best-selling pocketbook written by
different bestselling authors distributed by Precious Pages Corporation. Among the firsts were the
series of Bud Brothers followed by Ang Lalaking Nagmahal sa Akin (Derek Ramsey and Toni Gonzaga),
You’re mine, Only Mine (Will Devaughn and Denise Laurel). PHR stories were aired for months. They
produced week stories called Quikilig such as Love is only in the Movies.

Franchised shows
In 2001, ABC 5 bought the first franchise of a show which is the original Wheel of Fortune which was
then followed by other popular game in the U.S. in the late nineties like The Price Is Right and Who
wants to be a millionaire. The most successful franchised game show is Kapamilya, Deal or No Deal
hosted by Multimedia Queen Kris Aquino. In 2006, ABS-CBN, franchised the widest reality show, Pinoy
Big Brother then more reality shows came up like Survivor and Pinoy Fear Factor. Later on, stations
produced singing competition / reality shows like Pinoy Dream Academy and the 2 local versions of
American Idol, Philippine Idol in ABC5 and Pinoy Idol in GMA7. Other known franchised shows are
Kakasa Ka Ba Sa Grade 5, power of 10, Celebrity Duets, Hole in the Wall and Pilipinas Got Talent.

Reality Shows
Aside from the franchised reality show big TV networks also tried to make original reality shows, Xtra
Challenge being the first one and one of the most successful. Qpids, a reality pairing show for celebrity
loveteams was the first reality show in ABS-CBN. When Melai Cantiveros and Jason Francisco went out
of the PBB house ABS-CBN immediately gave them their reality shows like Melason In Love, In Da City
and Promdi Heart. Cesar Montano meanwhile hosted, Mano Mano a celebrity Boxing Challenge.

Radio Dramas
ABS-CBN and GMA produced remakes of radio dramas such as Ang Mga Mata ni Angelita, Gulong ng
Palad, Maria Flor de Luna and Bituing Walang Ningning.

Foreign
Western: ABS-CBN produced Princess Sarah played by Charlene San Pedro which was originally
Sarah Ang Munting Prinsesa form U.K.
Mexicanovela: In 2007, GMA Produced the monster hit Marimar played by Marian Rivera. Hoping to
get the same success, Rosalinda went next.
ABS-CBN created its own version of I Love Betty La Fea and Rubi. Next in line were Maria Mercedes
and Pasion de Amor.
Asianovela: The first Filipino show to have a Filipino remake was Zaido which was an original
Japanese TV show Shaider in 2006. In 2007, GMA made a local version of Lupin, a Japanese anime also
shown on the same network.
Later on, ABSCBN created the first remake of Asianovela, My Girl. GMA produced My Name is Kim
Sam Soon. Further productions were Only You, Stairway to Heaven, Full House, All About Eve and
Lovers in Paris.

Childrenserye
In 2005, ABS-CBN launched “Mga Anghel na walang langit” which started the craze over shows that
stars children. Another childrenserye is Super Inggo of ABS-CBN which became very successful and so
the network released a cartoon adaptation of it. More childrenserye appeared like Panday kids, kung fu
kids, pilyang kerubin, noah, momay and trudis liit. Lastly, the most successful was May Bukas Pa who
starred by Zaijan Jaranilla.

Fantasy series
Telefantasya are Filipino fantasy television series produced by GMA while Fantaserye is produced by
ABS-CBN. Marina of channel 2 was the pioneering Filipino fantasy television series aired in 2004
followed by Mulawin of channel 7 which was played in the same year. This style continued up to now.
Some examples are the encantadia, kampanerang kuba, krystala, dyosa, the last prince, rounin and
atlantika. Then, ABS-CBN will remaking again Kokey and will also have Imortal, similar to your twilight
saga, while GMA will again produce Encantadia and Captain Barbell.

Actionserye
In 2003, Basta’t kasama kita of Kapamilya Network starred by Judy Ann Santos and Robin Padilla
started the trend of Filipino Action Television Series. Eventually, it was followed by Sugo,
Codename:Asero, and Palos. Lastly, it was Asian Treasures which was considered as the most expensive
TV action series ever produced by GMA, around 3.1 million dollars.
Musical Shows/ Musicalserye
Musicalserye are music –type theme TV series. It was Bituin (2002) of ABS-CBN that started that kind of
craze which gave Nora Aunor her first teleserye. It was followed by Bituin Walang Ningning and
Pangarap na Bituin which was a regional semi-finalist for the 2008 International Emmy Awards. It was
still observed up until now for example, the Diva of GMA and the upcoming show of ABS-CBN, Idol.

Talent-search shows
In the latter part of the early 2000s, Filipinos who joined international talent searches and were
noticed were sensationalized that’s why talent searches started pouring like Talentadong Pinoy, Bitoy’s
Showtime, Pinoy Extreme Talent segment in Pinoy Records, Diz iz It and showwwtime. In cooperation
with Bench, ABS-CBN produced the county’s first model search – Be Bench. Of course, Filipinos love
singing, that’s why singning competition will never be outdated like Little Big Star and Search for a Star
in a Million. With the artista serach like Starstruck of GMA and Star Circle Quest of ABS-CBN
comparisons between the two giant networks became worse.

Game shows
Even though franchised reality shows are much known in the country some local game shows also
became successful like Go! Bingo, Games UpLate Live, Spin it Win it and Game KNB?

Horror Shows
Of course Horror Shows would always be a hit among Filipinos. Nginiig (2004-2006), is a horror show
based on personal experiences sent by the viewers. Other horror shows that were popular in the earlier
200s are Oka Tokat, Kakabakaba, Spirit and Wag Kukurap.

Children shows
Throughout the last two decades networks also produced shows which are children friendly. In the 90’s
the most popular is Batibot. ABS-CBN is also known for educational shows for children like Sineskwela,
Math Tinik, Hiraya Manawari, Epol Apple and Bayani. GMA 7 meanwhile is known for children shows
targeted for very young children like Jollitown, Zooperstars, Happyland and Sunnyville. This year ABS-
CBN will be reviving Wansapanataym, one of the longest running and most successful children show.

Teen Shows
Teen shows were also a hit throughout the last two decades because of their international counterparts
like dosson’s creek and 90210. Teen shows like T.G.I.S produced stars in the nineties like Angelu De
Leon and Bobby Andrews. Every year the two major stations, GMA and ABS-CBN are producing teen
shows hoping to produce big stars to. Click, Star Magic present: All About your Lyf and All About Your
Lyf 2, Tabing Ilog, AnnaKareNina, Luv2Luv, Let’s Go, Berks and Gimik which had different batches of
stars.

Cooking Shows
Even though TV stations were already producing cooking shows it was only during the establishment of
QTV(sister station of GMA) that cooking shows were revived. Moreover, bigger stations are only
injecting cooking segments on their talk shows. Right now QTV has 4 cooking shows Quickfire, My
Favorite Recipes, Delicioso and Healthy Cravings. Most of the said shows are sponsored by cooking
related products like the Knorr Sarap show hosted by Eula Valdez and Jean Garcia.

Patterned Shows
Hoping to get the same success that the international shows are getting local stations produced shows
which are patterned to international shows. Most of the singing competition like Search for a Star and
Pinoy Pop superstar were patterned to American Idol. Shall we dance of TV5 and You Can Dance of
ABS-CBN are dancing shows with the same format with Dancing with the Stars. Face to Face hosted by
Amy Perez is also patterned to an American Show entitled the Jerry Springer Show.

10 Minute Capsule Shows


With the birth of QTV, the station also started a trend of producing 10 minute capsule shows. First it
started with their cooking shows like Quickfire and My favourite Recipes but later on the station also
produced 10-minute comedy show like the award winning Camera Cafe. Studio 23, sister station o ABS-
CBN also produced 10 minute shows which are actually segments from their shows but later on had
isolated contents from its programs. Some of their famous short shows are Girlista, Boses ng Kabataan
and Quick-e.
