Chapter 9: Warehousing

1. The main benefit of Cross- docking is to reduce overall potential costs within the
process and hopefully increase productivity. Furthermore, cross-docking helps
reduce potentials risks for companies. However, cross docking does not
necessarily suit every warehouse needs, there are cases where in cross docking
might actually diminish productivity. The main concern in cross docking is
checking whether it will actually increase productivity in the company. In
choosing cross-docking, there are several factors that you must consider.
Furthermore, we should also keep in mind that cross-docking works best with
great volume of products. In addition, moving or transferring to a cross-docking
process would require a huge amount of time and capital. The amount of capital
and time required may be a big risk and a huge blow to the company if it fails.
Cost benefit analysis could be done by comparing the expenses done in order to
improve to cross docking versus the expenses saved by using less man-power.

2. The main issue to be resolved would be the mishandling of delivery. Errors such
this is normal in the field of manufacturing and logistics. It is important to always
have back up plans and contingencies for cases like these. The company should
always assume that an error could happen at any time. For this case, I would first
assess what has happened and act accordingly. The issue with the tires should
be addressed first in order for it not to be repeated. I would focus on delivering
what is given to the right places and work on solving the remaining issues after.

3. I would work with the company and try to initiate the recall as organized as
possible. In cases like these, it is imperative that the actions be done in an
orderly fashion. The first action would be to contact all establishments with the
product and inform them of the recall. The second would be to assess the
products recalled and check for the defects. Lastly, after assessment of the
product, the company would then work with the worse cases and gradually work
its way to the least defective ones.

4. In order to get an idea of how the productivity in the system has changed, I would
compare the overall efficiency of the past to the current one. To be more specific,
I would list down all orders taken and finished, delivery time and schedules,
delays, etc. This data would then more or less portray a clear picture of how the
system has changed and if it changed for the better. If their expectations of an
increase in productivity and warehousing have been met or not.
