Instructional Design Questions

Please explain your design process from initial project brief through to delivery.

Answers will vary, but you are looking for awareness of the wider training cycle – not just the
build/design phase.

Keywords:

1. Gain understanding of audience, timescales, learning objectives, preferred delivery method,


requirement for data capture (e.g. completion/score), SMEs.
2. Request/collate source material.
3. Draft/storyboard content.
4. Trial/get SME approval for final content.
5. Publish.
6. Monitor, gain feedback and improve.

Also, good to hear is ‘ADDIE’ (standard approach for IDs): Analysis, Design, Development,
Implementation, Evaluation.

Namechecking of any academic theory is also a good sign.

Please describe how you ensure that you can work effectively with Subject Matter Experts?

Might overlap with first question if they answer thoroughly.

 Be well-read - request source material prior to briefings/meetings


 Set expectations and prepare a timeline - be clear about what information and support you
need from them and how much time it will take
 Ask questions when you are unsure
 Involve them in the mechanics of the learning (the need to edit and keep things concise)
 Show them examples of the intended approach/delivery method
 Be flexible
 Get approval for finished content
 Show them feedback from published resources.

training material that caters for them.

be made easier for second language speakers.

There are loads of variations but these are amongst the industry standard. Make a note of any other
software they mention – everyone has preferences depending on their background, which might be
just as good.
