WHAT IS A
CRITIQUE?
A CRITIQUE IS NOT SIMPLY A
CRITICISM.

A critique is a specific style of essay in which you


identify, evaluate, and respond to an author's ideas, both
positively and negatively. It is usually applied to
academic sources.
CRITICAL READING
Critical reading is a more ACTIVE
way of reading.
Critical reading is a process of analyzing,
interpreting and, sometimes, evaluating.

CRITICAL -What is the article's background and purpose?


-What is the main idea (the main argument) that the
READING article is communicating?

EVALUATE

ARTICLE -How convincing is the argument?


-What does the argument assume?
CRITIQUE -How useful or applicable is the article?
-How does the article compare with other current theory
and research?

RESPOND
-What is your assessment of the article?
-What issues does it raise?
-What issues does it avoid?

INTRODUCTION
Make an introductory paragraph
1 that includes the following:
-- The author’s name(s) and the title of the article

-- The background of the article, genre, POV, etc.

-- The author’s main point

-- A thesis statement that previews your analysis


SUMMARY
After your introduction, discuss the
following in your own words:

--The main points of the article

--The arguments presented in the article

--The findings of the article


BODY
After summarizing the article, critique

3 the article by doing the following:


-- Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the
article that you noted while critically reading the
article.

--State your informed opinions about the clarity,


relevancy, and accuracy of the article, using
specific examples from the article to support your
statements.
CONCLUSION
Finally, end your article critique with a
conclusion that does the following:
--Summarize the key points in the article, as well

the key points from your own analysis.

--Close with a comment about the significance of


the research or a statement of future research
needed in the field.

--Recommend / Suggest
