Teaching Listening through ‘Reading Aloud With Illustration’ Video In The Classroom

Background
This papper discuss about teaching listening through ‘Reading Aloud With Illustration’
video in the classroom. This material is based on the reccomendation link of Self Access
Learning Center of The University of Delaware. Here the writer took the link from Useful Link
for Listening – ESL menu. The link was directed to http://www.storylineonline.net/ . This
website provides some videos of reading aloud and the illustration as well.

The writer choose a video of narrative-fable story titled “Please Please the Bees”, which
is read by Rashida Jones. It is suitable for eight grade students of SMP based on Indonesian’s
curriculum 2013, especially on Basic Competence (KD) 3.14 and 4.18.

KI 3: Memahami pengetahuan (faktual, konseptual, dan prosedural) berdasarkan rasa ingin
tahunya tentang ilmu pengetahuan, teknologi, seni, budaya terkait fenomena dan
kejadian tampak mata.
KI 4: Mencoba, mengolah, dan menyaji dalam ranah konkret (menggunakan, mengurai,
merangkai, memodifikasi, dan membuat) dan ranah abstrak (menulis, membaca,
menghitung, menggambar, dan mengarang) sesuai dengan yang dipelajari di sekolah
dan sumber lain yang sama dalam sudut pandang/teori.

Basic Competence (KD)

3.14 Memahami fungsi sosial, struktur teks, dan unsur kebahasaan dari teks narrative
berbentuk fabel indonesia dan legenda indonesia, sesuai dengan konteks penggunaannya.
4.18 Menangkap makna teks narative lisan dan tulis, berbentuk fable, dan legenda indonesia
pendek dan sederhana penggunaannya.

Pre-Listening
1. Teacher can ask some leading questions to call student’s previous knowledge and relate
it with the material that will be learnt on the meeting. It is for preparing the students for
listening. Some leading questions might be a series of questions that connected each
other as follows:
Do you know Winnie the Pooh movie?
What animal that Pooh represents?
Pooh is representing a bear. (showing a picture of a bear on viewer)
Does pooh like drinking honey?
What animal that produces honey?
Bee is producing honey. (Showing a picture of bee on viewer)
From my questions before, can you guess what will we learn today?

2. Teacher tells students about what they will learn on the meeting, and what is the title of
the story as well as the overview of the story.
For example :” today we will watch and listen to a story read by Rashida Jones with the
title ‘Please Please the Bees’. It is a story about a bear called Benedict. Life is sweet for
Benedict. Every morning he wakes up to find jars of fresh honey on his back porch. He
makes honey toast for breakfast, bakes honey cake in the afternoon, and drinks honey
tea before bed. But one day, there is something strage happened on his life. Do you
want to know the story? Lets watch the video then.”

While-Listening
1. First, teacher distribute the comprehension questions to all the students, and ask them to
read through the questions and identify the unknown words (New words) as well as
finding the meaning. This activity is good for the students to prepare and focus their
mind into the topic or the story.
2. Second, teacher play the video twice. The first one for answering the questions, while the
second one for checking the answer.
3. It is better to give a space for 1 -2 minutes from the first and the second play in order to
let the students breathe and refresh their mind to get ready for the second play.
4. After that, teacher ask students to switch their work to each other in order to check the
answer together.

Post-Listening
1. Teacher asks student’s impression about the story orally. weather it makes them happy
or not.
2. Teacher asks about the content of the story.
3. Teacher asks students about their new vocabulary and the meaning in Bahasa.
4. Teacher asks students to write a synopsis (not the whole story) of the story.

that bees delivered.

5. Because there were no longer flowers around and they had to fly miles away.
6. He was thinking and did a research.
7. He did a litte shopping and did a lot of work, then he learnt how to harvest bees.
