AP Art Summer Work, 2019

Ms Reiss

The AP Art portfolio is changing this school year. To complete the portfolio, you will be creating 15
pieces of art that explore a theme of your choosing. We will spend time in the beginning of the year
exploring themes and art media. This summer, complete the following assignment and email to me
before the first day of school.

1. Set up a Google Drive folder and title it with your first and last name, AP Art
2. Go to the Art 21 website, artists list https://art21.org/artists/
3. Choose a name from the list. Read the bio, look at the artist’s work, watch the video. Repeat
until you find someone whose work you find interesting, intriguing, and/or inspiring.
4. NOTE: These are contemporary artists and sometimes the work reflects sensitive subject matter.
If this might be a problem for you or for your family, choose one of the following artists from the
Art 21 list: El Anatsui, Vija Celmins, Rackstraw Downes, Louise Despont, Olafur Eliasson, Tim
Hawkinson, Maya Lin, Josiah McElheny, Martin Puryear, Do Ho Suh, Andrea Zittel
5. In your Google Drive, create a Google Slide presentation titled Art 21 Summer Work.
6. Include the following information:
a. Title page – Artist’s Name, birth date and place
b. Slide 1- example of artist’s work. Can google artist, copy and paste image. Please
choose an example that is school appropriate since you’ll be presenting this to the
group. Include a text box with title, date, medium and dimensions if applicable.
c. Slide 2- What drew you to this artist? Write what you found interesting, intriguing
and/or inspiring. Be specific when referring to the work—what visually and
conceptually drew you to this work?
d. Slide 3- What is one question you have about this work? It can be about the process or
materials, or something else you would ask the artist.
e. Slide 4- What is the artist’s theme? What is the work about? What are the main
concepts the artist works with?
f. Slide 5- If you could create something inspired by this artist, what would you create?
Describe a project, both idea and materials. NOTE: it can be something totally different
from the artist’s work, but it should use the work as a jumping off point. If you want to
create sketches, take photos, etc. and upload a photo, that would be great but it is not
required.
7. You’ll be sharing this with the class the first day of school. If you have trouble with any part of
this, please email me. Don’t forget to share your Google Drive with me so I can see your work.
