INTRODUCTION

 Current Scenario

Makemytrip.com is India’s most popular online travel company which was founded in the year

2000 by Deep Kalra. The company has established its headquarters in Gurugram, Haryana. The

company is known to provide online travel services ranging from flight tickets, domestic and

international travel packages, hotel reservations, rail and bus tickets and that too at reasonable

prices. The company since its foundation has progressed to own 14 company-owned travel stores

in 14 cities including their Gurugram headquarters, over 30 franchisee-owned travel stores which

sells packages in 28 cities and counters 4 major airports of India under MakeMyTrip brand. They

also have offices in New York, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Phuket, Dubai and other

major tourism and travel destinations.

Nurtured from the seed of a single great idea - to empower the traveler - MakeMyTrip went on to

pioneer the entire online travel industry in India. It aimed to offer a range of best-value products

and services along with cutting-edge technology and dedicated round-the-clock customer support.

After consolidating its position in the market as a brand recognized for its reliability and

transparency, MakeMyTrip followed its success in the US by launching its India operations in

2005. With the foresight to seize the opportunities in the domestic travel market, brought on by a

slew of new airlines, MakeMyTrip offered travellers the convenience of online travel bookings at

rock-bottom prices. MakeMyTrip also stayed ahead of the curve by continually evolving its

technology to meet the ever changing demands of the rapidly developing global travel market.

Steadily establishing itself across India and the world, MakeMyTrip simultaneously nurtured the

growth of its offline businesses like its franchises and affiliates simultaneously, augmenting the
brand’s already strong retail presence further. Today, MakeMyTrip is much more than just a travel

portal or a famous pioneering brand - it is a one-stop-travel-shop that offers the broadest selection

of travel products and services in India. MakeMyTrip is the undisputed online leader, with its share

of the travel market extending to more than 50% of all online sales, a fact evinced by the trust

placed in it by millions of happy customers. Remaining reliable, efficient and at the forefront of

technology, MakeMyTrip’s commitment and customer-centricity allows it to better understand

and provide for its customers’ diverse needs and wants, and deliver consistently.

History of MakeMyTrip

Initially, Deep Kalra had also seen that the Indian market was yet to evolve & mature, when it

came to the internet industry and playing it safe seemed far more viable than otherwise! Hence, he

started off by catering to the overseas Indian community for their US-to-India travel needs.

Anyways just within two years from their launch, their business got jinxed and the dot com market

crashed, taking down everything they had begun to make! This was a very hard time for them and

literally everyone who belonged to the internet market The situation was so bad that in-order to

save the company, Deep had to take some very harsh decisions. That is when IRCTC (Indian

Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation) launched their first online business model which

enabled the Indian traveler to purchase railway tickets on the Internet. This model of IRCTC was

well accepted but the Indian masses and turned out to be a huge hit. These chains of events opened

a whole new level of opportunities for the travel market in India.

From here onwards, the company brought about a lot of additions to its existing profile. As

satisfying and happy the moment was for them, it was equally a proud moment for India too,

because MakeMyTrip was one of the very few Indian Dotcom companies to be listed on the US

stock exchange. This also bridged the gap between the foreign investors & Indian businesses;
additionally, this also boosted the confidence of the young entrepreneurs which gave rise to a lot

of start-ups in the future. Since then, MakeMyTrip has majorly focused on expansion and up-ping

the revenue which has been done through various mediums such as unique marketing strategies,

product development, etc! MakeMyTrip was also seen to be booking losses worth $2.6-million.

Times were hard for them but as they had faced problems earlier, they were more prepared and

experienced to tackle issues this time, and hence in the next quarter, MakeMyTrip successfully

came back with a bang & proved themselves by reporting a 27.7% rise in revenues. If that wasn’t

enough then in march 2014, MakeMyTrip announced a $15 million innovation fund for new

entrepreneurs in the travel circuit. Apart from initial investment of 2-million, MakeMyTrip has

raised USD 10-million in 2005, USD 13-million in 2006 & USD 15-million in 2007 from investors

such as SAIF (Softbank Asia Infrastructure Fund) Partners, Helion Venture Partners, Sierra

Ventures & Tiger Global, till date.

APPLICATIONS INTRODUCED

The company provides assistance and online booking solutions for day to day personal and

corporate travel needs. It offers travel products and services, including international and

domestic air tickets, holiday packages, and hotel bookings; meetings, incentives, conferences,

and exhibitions; and domestic bus and rail tickets, private car and taxi rentals, and B2B and

affiliate services. The company also provides access to airlines operating to and from India;

hotels in India and internationally; and guesthouses in India, Indian railways, and Indian bus

operators. In addition, it offers franchising opportunities.


Technology has helped us in numerous ways possible, the tedious task to find a hotel which will

accommodate a traveler who is on a vacation is eradicated by the advent of these online

applications and website services. Now, one can book an online hotel, flight ticket, train ticket,

almost any ticket of any kind in a click of a button. These web services also provide us very

enticing offers through push-notifications that the app shows. Had there been no applications a

user would not be able to get the knowledge of the offer at the earliest.

MakeMyTrip is a large ticket booking service provider which caters to the needs of a consumer,

they truly understand what will compel a consumer to book a hotel online through their

application or web service. They are well versed with the propensity of a consumer to spend on a

vacation which is why they push out enticing offers and discounts time and again. Upon every

booking there is a reward against every booking made which is again an incentive for the

consumer to make booking through the web service or application in the future again.

There are many advantages other than the ones mentioned above, these advantages are for the

travel agents-

1) It is a fairly low cost way to list one’s hotel and its rooms etc.

2) Potential reduction in the online marketing spend.

3) A reduction in the website costs.

4) Impartial reviews on online travel apps may give new customers the confidence to book.

Along with the advantages every thing has a downside to it, so is the case with booking a train,

flight, hotel online. Although the advantages overshadow the otherwise-


1) Online travel agents sometimes charge commission on every sale, which can range between

10-20% of the gross cost

2) There may be restrictive terms and conditions imposed by them which a consumer may

overlook and suffer later.

3) Sometimes the contact support is not as reachable as it should be and there is not personal

touch with the support system which makes it very time consuming for a consumer to contact

and seek grievance.

BUSINESS MODEL

Deep Kalra worked at ABN Amro Bank and GE Money and lived a luxurious life and had a great

job but was tired of working a life where he had to work for a boss. His life dramatically changed

after a meeting with his friend at a Mumbai mall where they developed the business plan over a

napkin and a top most company came on the floor from napkin. Kalra was in a mood to open the

online travel portal in such a situation when there were only 50 million internet users and out of

which only 2 million had broadband connection. The investors were not in a mood to invest with

Kalra and revoked but it was not enough to disrupt Kalra from his vision. He along with 2 other

managers worked for 18 months without any salary. He didn’t stop here and told their employees

for 40% salary cutoffs. Kalra known for his business strategy knew the market scenario and

focused mainly on the inbound customers returning to India but he didn’t forget the vision to open

an online travel portal. Some includes SAIF Partners, Helion Ventures Partners, Sierra Ventures.

MakeMyTrip is a well-known name for providing services in luxurious tours and hotel booking

websites. The company has branched after its inception through a series of small acquisitions.

MakeMyTrip has its seventh acquisition as Mygola. MakeMyTrip has acquired Mygola as third
takeover of an Indian company. The site, Mygola.com covers more than 20,000 destinations

worldwide, with half a million organic visitors a month. Mygola said that its app is present in 16

cities across the world which has more than 5000 installs from Google Playstore on android. The

app enables the user to create custom trips in just 15 minutes.

MMT projected a turnover of $255.37 million (2013-14). The Indian operations were estimated to

contribute over 50 per cent of MMT’s projected turnover and MMT was expecting that in the

initial years, 90 per cent of the sales would be online and rest through its call centre and physical

offices. The business model focused on generating revenue from travelers to and from India.

Within a year after inception in India, MMT has acquire a strong customer base of over 200, 000

delighted customers and selling over 3,000 flight tickets, 300 hotel room nights, and over 50

holiday packages every day.

TRADITIONAL VS CURRENT BUSINESS SCENARIO

In the times where the travel was not technology oriented we can definitely recall those times when

we had to drag our luggage from the taxi to the station or airport and had to face so much of

problems and advices from our travel agents and cut to today we are now in the technological era

we can pick up our smartphones and book our favorite travel destinations for a quick getaway.

Technology has undoubtedly changed the face of travel and made travelling so much easier. Below

are the changes brought in by the advent of the technological advancements:


Deciding the Voyage:

Then: Back in the pre-Internet days (aka stone age), one would be pouring over a holiday brochure

at a travel agent’s office, buying guidebooks or taking a friend’s recommendation when it came to

deciding where to go. Contemplating the decisions regarding which vacation to choose amongst

many, solely based on the reviews of a person(s).

Now: Today, it is a popular travel blog, a travel show on TV, social media, or even a friend on

FaceBook photos can spark off one’s wanderlust and inspires one to travel without spending a

penny. Online Reviews are another key factor which helps one decide where to go for an excursion.

These reviews are not by any normal people but are by the people who have actually travelled

there along with the pictures attached in their reviews makes it easier for one to finally have

contemplated their decision and selecting it.

Booking the Flight/Train

Then: As already mentioned the long snaking queues at railway stations where one stood, months

before your trip, sweating, swatting away flies and impatiently shifting your weight from one leg

to another, just to book a train ticket? Or visiting a travel agency nearby to get a good deal on an

air fare?

Now: Say no more to the tedious task one needs to perform in order to get a ticket, travelling is

much convenient now, the accessibility has been widened. Now all one needs to do is go online,
hunt for the best flight/rail deals, check travel rates and the reviews by the travelers in a few taps,

the booking is done, and a booking ticket is issued.

Booking a Hotel:

Then: Back in the days one would go through the hotel brochures, ask friends for

insights where they stayed during their holidays and then actually phone the hotel

to book a room. All the while, one was never really entirely sure of what the hotel

room looked like. For all one knew, could end up in Bates Motel and never be the

wiser!

Now: Online booking engines and recommendation sites are the simplest, and

often most reliable ways, to not only book a hotel, but also be sure of the location,

what your room looks like, the amenities offered. And nowadays with home

sharing communities online, one can even stay with a local, get great

recommendations on what to see and where to eat and even make new friends

along the way. Traveling has become more fun with the advent of all the easement

brought in by the technological advancements.

Learning Local Language:


Now: Back in the day, one would carry a phrasebook on holiday, struggle with broken Spanish

or Italian or even French for that matter and give up and basically end up miming that one wants

to go to the loo or washroom or restroom or whatever it is called in their local language.

Now: Today, all one needs to do is use smartphone with apps like Google Translate, iTranslate

or Waygo installed, to help interact with the locals with perfect ease.

CONCLUSION

As according to the above aspect of the analysis this website is highly beneficial in which all the

people are provided with the convenient look up. And it has established an excellent standard in

the society where the founder also got success. Which made people plan their tour from their

comfortable positions and standards. The plans which they had been implemented are also highly

productive and beneficial to the people as they can save their wallets at different ranges according

to their budget{ Paytm, credit , debit , amazon pay and many others like these}. It has also provided

goods beneficial support to the regular customers to get cash back options and offers on their

booking’s and also zero cancellation fees on the booking’s, discount offers on their booking etc

which are really helpful for them. Make my trip also uses promotional methods in which to

promote this website to let the people about it world-wide. Their promotional methods which are

processed have also benefited the other first to upgrade as it has been collaborated with them and

came up with new innovations. For instance: their collaboration’s with Paytm have provided a

cash back benefit which attracts the customers more and which also increase’s the users to the

website. Make my trip introduced new forms in which it became easy for the travellers who travel
around by flight frequently. It has mainly provided an extra benefit in which it became easy for

the people who travel to the metropolitan cities. While according to the communication base they

have responsible policies in which it will not be troubled to the customers situation.
