Abstract

Academic works among students gives challenges to them particularly

in Senior High School. This study aimed to determine the influences of

academic works to the mental health of senior high students and how do

they manage the challenges of academic works. The researchers selected

6 research participants to be interviewed. It was either a personal

interview or using the messenger. The interview showed a different

answers, there were 5 thoughts about the influences of academic works to

the mental health of SHS students which are stress, unhealthy, two-edged,

improves critical thinking and becoming active. There were also 2

thoughts about how do they manage the challenges of academic works

which are time management and do not procrastinate.

Chapter I

Introduction

Background of the Study

Academic work is important because it improves our learning ability. It is

also a task to where we perform it in order for us to get high grades and school

scores. The students are able to get many ideas and knowledge that they can

apply in their daily lives through academic work. However, there are some

students that are experiencing difficulty in doing this especially if they are given

a lots of academic works. This lots of academic work can affect their mental

health negatively. The research is focused on the negative influences of

academic works affecting the mental health of senior high students.

Notre Dame Of Cotabato is one of a school that offers high standard of

education in Cotabato City. It is also where the researchers of this research

paper studied so this researchers experienced on how the school manage them

and how the teachers teach them and give them tasks to do in order to improve

their learning ability and their knowledge that they can apply to themselves.

As cited by (Pegrer,2015), people who wants to achieve their future career

and wants to work so that they can sustain their life and their future family will

need high level of education to know the technological and demanding of the

future, that is the importance of education for the 21st students. The positive

outcome we value such as having a goal to be an engineer is strongly linked to

the academic work succession. This academic succession is the most important
2

aspect of human being. The society define individual by its quality of education

succession. However there will be an obstacles in achieving your goals, one of the

obstacles in achieving your dream is the mental health related problems due to

the pressure and difficulties in their academic performance especially working to

their academic works. As cited by (Suldo, 2008; Crede, 2015). The academic

achievement or the academic work succession is correlated to the life

satisfaction. The satisfaction of every students is the academic succession, when

they are given a task the only thing that comes out in their mind is to pass it so

they can fill their satisfaction as a student.

With the above mentioned references, there is a relationship of academic

work affecting the health of senior high students. When students fail they suffer

because they did not fulfil their satisfaction as a student, because of this, their

mental health is at risk. However, it is not just the one who fails in their

academic work who succeeded in doing their academic works, according to ABC

news when they interviewed Prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, it is not just the

one who fails but also the one who succeed. According METRO UK a straight A

student, 15, obsessed with revising killed himself ‘over exam stress’

As a researcher and as a student from Notre Dame Of Cotabato had also

experienced the above-mentioned problems/issues/scenarios in their academic

work. It is the main objective of the researcher to give an awareness for the

teachers and the school about the experiences of students affected by the

influence of academic work to their mental health.

3

This research is mainly for the purpose to make the teachers, the parents and

the students aware to the influence of academic work to the health of their

students or child and give them a guide on how will they take care of their

students mental health to avoid serious mental health problem.

Statement of the problem

This research attempt to find an evidence to the influences of academic work

to the mental health of the senior high students at Notre Dame Of Cotabato and.

More specifically it seeks to find the answers to the following questions:

1.What are the influences of academic work in the mental health of the senior

high students?

2. How does the senior high students manage the challenges of the academic

works?

Scope and Limitation

This study will assess the influences of academic work to the mental health

of senior high school students. This study will be conducted at Notre Dame Of

Cotabato. The respondents of this study will be the senior high school students

at Notre Dame Of Cotabato, thus, only selected senior high school students will

be the respondents of this study. Only 6 students will be the participants of this

study from grade 11 to grade 12.

Significance of the study

The possible result will be beneficial to the following:

4

Students. The result may provide them an awareness on how academic

work will influence their mental health and how will they manage their academic

work while maintaining their mental health.

Teachers. The result may serves as a guide for them on how will they

manage the performance or the academic work of their students and their

mental health. The possible result may also give them an awareness about the

influences of academic work to the health of their students in order for them to

know how to take care of their students.

Parents. The result may provide them an awareness on how will the

influences of academic works affect the health of their child. The result may also

give them an advice on how will they teach their child and how will they motivate

their child/children to perform well in school while maintaining their mental

health.

future researchers. This research will serve as a guide for them. They may

use this as a reference for their works if their work is similar or related to our

works.

Chapter II

Review of Related Literature

This chapter presents the underlying concepts and studies made by the

different researchers which serve as the basis of the conceptualization of this

study. It includes literature and studies on the influence of academic study to

the health of senior high students. All of the data are gathered from reading

materials such as books and articles online.

Academic Workload

Academic workload is the amount of work to be done by the students by

the teacher, but giving them heavy workload it’s one of the major cause of

students having mental health problems. According to (Tiwali and Balani

2013,p.29)“Heavy academic workload were identified to be the powerful source of

stress”. When students are given many tasks and has given the same working

hours, then that students will feel stress, specifically the negative stress. We are

always stress when we are given a task by the teachers especially if all of the

teachers gave us a simultaneous work.

As cited by Oliver(2014), Academic workload appears to be a major

contributor of mental health problems. Some students believe that they are

being overburdened by assignments, quizzes, exams, performance tasks,

reporting and etcetera. However, some medical professionals believe that a

workload equates with a level of maturity. Heavy workload raises distress among

employees, they feel more uneasy, tired and worried, and by the end of a
7

demanding working day, they are less able to concentrate on what they are doing

(South China Morning Post,2016). This can be applied to students especially to

the senior high students, if they are given heavy workload they will feel tense and

always worried.

Stress

Stress is very common to us especially when we are studying or working,

but if we are over stress it can harm us. According to Bernstein(2008) he define

stress as a negative emotional, cognitive, behavioural and physiological process

that occurs as a person tries to adjust or deal with stressor. The effect of stress is

understood in many walks of life with diverse population especially among

students. However, stress can also be positive, according to (Mills et al., )

stress is not always a bad thing. Stress is simply the body's response to changes

that create taxing demands. According to Dr. Lazarus suggested that there is

a difference between eustress, which is a term for positive stress,

and distress, which refers to negative stress. As cited by Sindhu (2016), stress is

considered as a state of individual that result from their interaction with the

environment that is perceived as too demanding and a threat to their well-being.

According to Kausar,(2010). The stress can come from the feeling of

frustrated, angry, nervous or anxious. It means to say that when something that

makes you to feel frustrated, angry, nervous or anxious, this person is stressed

out. Stress or the negative stress is more prevalent among students due to their

hectic and demanding schedule which is important for learning as it interferes

8

with their performances and keeps the task oriented. It is due to a duration and

our demands on something that we want to finish and worked hard, that is

according to Ganesh et al.,(2012). Mental Health problems can occur if the stress

response goes on for too long or becomes chronic, such as when the source of

stress is constant, or if the response continues after the danger has subsided.

With chronic stress, those same life-saving responses in your body can suppress

immune, digestive, sleep, and reproductive systems, which may cause them to

stop working normally that is according to (National Institute of Mental

Health, ).Stress also often exists among students especially in the

aspects of academics (Shamsuddin, et al, 2013), workload (Tangade et al, 2011),

environment and financial resources (Andrew & Wilding, 2004). Therefore, the

stress is one of the contributing factors to mental health, and then it must be

resolved by using a appropriated method to enhance the well-being living of the

student. Mental health problem will affect the academic performances student

and it will go from bad to worse if the students do not receive any treatment. The

negative effect of mental health not only on the academic side, but also on their

daily life.

As cited by Ekpenyong et al.,(2013), stress’ presence is felt in home, office,

industry, and academic environments. It is a common element in life regardless

of race or cultural background. The emotional and physical ways in which we

respond to pressure can cause mental and physical symptoms. The effects of

stress vary with the ways it is appraised, and the coping strategies used differ
9

between individuals and are influenced by ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic

characteristics. Thus, there is no universal definition of stress.

Academic stress’ level varies depends on what environment the student

belong. As cited by Prabu(2015),Higher year students can experience moderate

level of stress, but students in private school tends to feel more stress than

students in government school.

Relationship of workload and stress

In the previous studies, workload and stress has a relationship among

students especially in the higher years.Previous study by Kausar (2010) among

higher year students in Pakistan showed that there was a positive relationship

between academic workload and perceived stress among study.Heavy academic

workloads can cause feeling of nervous and anxious which cause stress if it

persist in a longer period of time.

(Weerasinghe et al.,2012) proved that heavy academic workload is the

most prominent factor affecting to stress level of undergraduates in Sri Lankan

public universities in Colombo region where it dominating 90% of the top 10

stressor. Heavy workload among students is the major causes of being stress

and having health problems because of being over stress, however there are also

some previous studies stated that it is not just heavy workload but low workload

can cause stress too. As cited by Lindsay(2009), low workloads can make the

student highly stressed. Heavy workloads can negatively affect the psychological

well-being of employees, the stability of their family relationships, and their

10

safety in the workplace. These negative effects can fluctuate on a daily basis

based on the employees’ perception of the amount of work they have to

do(.Thompson).

Depression among students

Depression is one of the major mental health problem. It is one of the most

widespread mental health problem across the world (Sarokhani et al., 2013). The

issue of students’ mental health is a global problem that covers all develop and

non-develop societies, both modern and traditional (Bayram and Bilgel, 2008). In

academic, higher year students experience contradictions and obligation to

succeed in completing their task in order to graduate (Arslan, Ayranci, Unsal,

and Arslants, 2009).A number of studies have indicated a high prevalence of

mental health problems among students, including depression, compared to the

rest of the population (Yusoff et al., 2013). More importantly, recent studies in

this area indicate that the psychological and mental problems of students

continue to increase (Field, Diego, Pelaez, Deeds & Delgado, 2012).

Depression is a common disorder, but it is a serious and complex disease that

affects nearly 121 million people around the world (MMHA, 2008). depression

may involve feelings of sadness, weak, frustrated, desperate, helpless and

hopeless experienced by individual. Some of the symptoms experienced by

depressed individuals are low level of mood and dissatisfied with anything

happens around them. Most students who are depressed do not perform well in

academic achievement because the students are not motivated and not daring to
11

do anything to realise their aims. Furthermore, those depressed students tend to

think negatively and do not attempt to achieve their target. As a result of these

harmful behaviours, students continue to be frustrated, ended giving up, and

thereby causing low academic performances.

Depression is one of the most common or prevalent problems of mental

health, which is a serious health problem among the student population

(Ibrahim, Kelly, Adams & Glazebrook, 2013). Furthermore, depression has a

major impact on academic performance, academic satisfaction and academic

achievement (Arslan et al., 2009). Previous studies show that psychological

disorder, particularly depression, is a common disorder encounter by students

(Adewuya, Ola, Olutayo, Mapayi & Oginni, 2006; Dahlin et al., 2005) especially

senior high students in private school. Studies of psychological problems

encountered by counselling centres revealed that depression was one of the five

most common problems among college students. They highlighted that

depression accounted for 39% of problems, a higher rate than anxiety, problems

with academic workload, and the self-esteem of students across different

settings (Erdur-Baker, Aberson, Borrow & Draper, 2006; Green, Lowry & Kopta,

2003).

Recently, many studies have been carried out on the rate of depression

among students (Chen et al., 2013). They report that depression is a widespread

problem and continues to increase in the student population (Sarokhani et al.,

2013). Likewise, a more recent study by Haldorsen, Bak, Dissing and Petersson
12

(2014) found that the prevalence of depression among Danish medical students

was remarkably higher than the Danish population as a whole. Additionally, a

recent study on depression in Chinese university students by Chen and his

colleagues (2013) concluded that the prevalence of depression was similar to that

of the non-student population in the Chinese

Anxiety among students

Anxiety is a physiological disorder associated with significant distress

and impairment of function. It is the relationship between thoughts and feelings

that causes the mental impression of inability to control and predict undesirable

events in life (Keong et al. ,2015). Effects of anxiety symptoms perceived as a

threat that affects health physical like high heartbeat, sweating on both sides of

the palms, insomnia and behavioural changes. In most cases, a person will show

different degree of reactions and responses according to the perceived level of

threat of that person. A number of studies have shown that there is a

relationship between anxiety and academic achievement among university

students. Specifically, students suffer from anxiety disorder often do not perform

well in lives and academics.Anxiety has been shown to interfere with people’s

overall wellbeing. Anxiety consists of, often irrational, fears or worries as well as

physical symptoms (Muris, Mayer, Freher, Duncan, & van den Hout,

2010;Thompson, Robertson, Curtis, & Frick, 2013). Anxiety is one of the most

prevalent mental health concerns for children and adolescents (Essau, 2003;

Moksnes, & Espnes, 2012; Muris et al., 2010). Anxiety is the same as depression,
13

it is a widespread disorder especially for the students who are facing

adolescence.

Mental health

According to Abdul Ghani, (2013), mental health is a prosperous state in

which an individual is aware of its own abilities, can handle pressure well, can

work productively and able contribute to society. This means that mental health

as the fundamental to the well-being of individuals and ability of society's to

function more effectively. In short, mental health based on the definition by

Abdul Gahni (2013), is the expression of emotion, feelings and symbolizes the

ability to adapt to various pressures, difficulty and demands of life. This increase

in workload and stress can affect the undergraduate student’s mental health

(Thuraiselvam and Thang, 2015)

Mental health well-being helps students realises true potentials,

capable of handling pressure and stress, and more importantly, to perform the

given tasks productively (Keong et al. ,2015). Mental health issues often occur

among students and create a negative impact on students. The constructs of

mental health are composed of three elements, namely, depression, anxiety and

stress. A wealth of research findings indicate that academic performance is

affected by the mental health problems. Mental health is associated with the

promotions of well-being, prevention mental disorder, treatment and

rehabilitation that are affected by mental disorders.

Mental health problem among students

14

Mental health problems is a general problem that every students

encounter this especially the higher year students.Mental health issues in

students have consistently increased over time (Eisenberg, Gollust, Golberstein,

& Hefner, 2007; Gallagher 2014). Mental illness refers to a wide range of mental

health conditions — disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behaviour.

Examples of mental illness include depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia,

eating disorders and addictive behaviours. Many people have mental health

concerns from time to time. But a mental health concern becomes a mental

illness when ongoing signs and symptoms cause frequent stress and affect your

ability to function. That is according to (MAYO Clinic, )

Chapter III

Methodology

This chapter provides a detailed description of the research process.

Discussion will include the research design, data sources, data collection and
analysis, the role of the researcher, ethical considerations and the
trustworthiness of the study.

Research Design

The research used narrative approach design. The narrative approach

typically focuses on the lives of individuals as told through their own stories. The
narrative approach can be considered as an appropriate for investigating a “real
life problems”. The narrative approach deals with the study of the experiences of
a single individual embracing stories of the life and exploring the learned
significance of those individual experiences.

The researchers of this study used the narrative approach because it is a

powerful tool or method for the research in getting the individual’s experiences
in relation to the influences of academic work affecting the mental health of the
senior high students. It clearly illustrates the details of the experiences and how
they are seen by the subjects in the situation. It is an appropriate instrument for
this study wherein the researchers will be needing to envision and explore the
experiences of the research participants.

Locale of the study

The study was conducted in Notre Dame of Cotabato which is located at #63
Sinsuat Avenue, Cotabato City, because the participants of this study were all
coming from this school.

Research Participants

The proponents of this study selected the senior high students of Notre
Dame of Cotabato. The researchers decided to choose the Grade 11 and Grade
17

12 senior high students of Notre Dame of Cotabato School Year 2018-2019, to be

there participants of this study. The senior high students are now in the stage
where they can experience the challenges and difficulties in college. They were
selected carefully since they are fit to become research participants of this study.

Data Sources

The source of data were all coming from the personal answers of the
participants of this study during an interview. The answers were taken from an
application called messenger or in a personal interview. The source of data
never included the researcher’s personal opinion, understandings and
conclusions.

Data Gathering procedure

The data were taken from the personal answers of the participants in the
interview. The duration of data collection was about for two weeks with the
anticipation of availability of the research respondents and the researchers. The
personal names of the participants were not included. A pseudonym were given
to each research participant to protect his/her identity. Moreover, in the
collecting of data of the study, we undergo these process namely: interview with
the study-informants and note-taking.

Before we conducted the interviews, we made sure that ethical

considerations were properly observed. The researchers talked to their selected
senior high student to inform them that they are chosen to be our participants in
our research. The researchers also informed them that they will be interviewed
and their identity will be kept private. The researchers gave an option to the
research participants to where would they want to be interviewed, the following
options are: through messenger or through personal interview..

During the interview,There was a few research participants chose personal

interview, the researchers only listen to what they were answering to our
questions, we made sure that our participants will feel comfortable in conveying
18

their message or answers. It is also to closely internalize what the informants

would share, particularly on the details of their mental health influenced by the
academic work. The researchers of this study did not draw conclusion on their
own opinion but they were all based everything on the data that were described
by the research participants in the interview. Some of the research participant
chose messenger, the researchers gave them the questions and the participants
sent their answers through messenger.

The data were all collected through audio recordings from the personal
interview and note-taking with the participants in a private place. The data were
also collected through messenger if the research participants chose messenger,
the chat between the participants and the researchers were screen shot as part
of our documentation that will be put in appendix.

Data analysis

The data were analysed using a method namely: data reduction, data display,
drawing of conclusion and verification (Zhang and wildermuth, 2007). First the
data reduction, to comply this, the researchers managed and handled
particularly with the sorting and organizing the qualitative data, retrieving and
locating words and phrases. The researhers of this study are going to expect that
their data will be consolidated and manageable after being sorted and
categorized.

Date display, on the other hand, will be presented in a chart so that it will be
arranged in an orderly manner and will show how the data are related.

Drawing conclusion and verification will be the last step of analysing the
data. The researchers of this study will define the analysed data and assess their
outcome for the questions at hand while verification, integrally linked to
conclusion drawing, required revisiting the data as many times as necessary to
cross-check or verify these emergent conclusions ( Paul,2006).
19

The conceptual framework will be interpreted with reference to the related

literature on the subject in an attempt to explain, with a theory, the issue being
studied by the researchers. There will be more than one issues being studied by
the researcher. There will be more than one that will be assigned to collect data
in order to increase the reliability of the data. If the findings of the different
researchers of this study arrive at the same conclusion, then the researchers will
be confident that the result of their research will be reliable.

Ethical consideration

In conducting this research all of the participants of this study were all
provided with verbal consent and letter. The participants of this study will not be
coerced and they were all participated in this study in their own will. The
researchers have decided to give the respondents privacy to avoid discrimination.
In terms of respondents identity, their personal information were never included
especially the names of the respondents. The researcher assured that all
gathered information were kept confidential.

Trustworthiness of study

To establish the trustworthiness of the study, we are going to observe its four
components. These are the following: credibility, confirmability, and
transferability.

Credibility. To establish credibility of the study, the researchers will ensure

that diligence will be properly observed during the data collection especially
during the interviews, wherein the researchers are going to avoid drawing of
conclusions. It will all be based on actual data, directly from the participants.
We will see to it that there will be no relevant data will be excluded and no
irrelevant data will be included. The researchers will also assign one of their
research team members to do the note-taking. The researchers are going to
assign who will be their independent analyst and reader for this research. All of
the researchers of this study will read and analysed the same data and compare
it to their independent analyst with one another. Arriving at the same findings
20

with the independent reader and analyst will strengthen the confidence and
credibility of the study.

Confirmability. To address the confirmability of the study, the researcher will

set aside their personal opinions, assumptions and judgements in order to
guard against deformation of data. The use of audio- interviews and note-taking
they will keep throughout the study is one way of ensuring confirmability. The
researchers will conduct the study with as little interference as possible in order
to gain the true picture of the personal experiences of the participants. The
researchers will use the bracketing approach as part of their methodology to
suspend personal bias.

Transferability. To address transferability, the researcher will describe in

detail the research context and the assumptions that are central to the research
and show all data as transparent as possible. The research will make sure that
the data are accurate and full of descriptions.

Role of the researcher

The role of the researcher in qualitative research is to attempt to access the

thoughts and feelings of study participants. As a researcher, this is not an easy
task because it involves asking people to talk about things that may be very
personal to them. The researcher will take the role of gathering the data in the
verbal interviews and thoroughly examines them. Sometimes the experiences
being explored are fresh in the participant’s mind, where other occasions
relieving the past experiences may be difficult. In qualitative studies, the role of
the researcher is quite different. The researcher is considered an instrument of
data collection ( Denzin and Lincoln, 2003). Even so, the data are being collected,
a primary responsibility of the researcher is to make the participants and their
data well-guarded and safe. Conducting the interviews properly according to the
design is also important role of the researcher.
21

The youngest was 16 and the oldest was 18 years old and the rest was 17 years

old. They had been informed that it was going to be part of the research paper

Results

The research participants were interviewed through either personal

interview or through Facebook messenger. The questionnaires for them are

about the research objectives.

For the objective 1 which is “ What are the influences of academic works to

the mental health of senior high students?”. There was only one question in

order to get the answer for our objective 1 which is “ What do you think are the

influences of academic works to your mental health? Why do you say so?”. Here

are the answers of the research participants.

Objective I. What are the influences of academic works to the mental health of

senior high students?

P-One “ The influences of academics works in my mental health is sometimes

i feel stress because of many work loads that needs to be done ASAP and i

always do this thing called cramming that leads to skipping meals and having not

enough sleep. Also, because of academic works i tend to forget my mental health

condition and i neglected myself.”

23

P-Two “ I think the effect/influence of academic works in my mental health is

really bad because most of us students know that grades are really important

and it’s what define us as students. If we fail on a specific subject it can reduce

our self confidence and it also makes us feel disappointed within ourselves that is

why most of us always try to do our best and strive for the best just to have a

really good grades and because of it we barely even get enough sleep and that is

what I’m doing right now. I don’t get enough sleep and the school works also

makes me stressed as hell. I get tired and sometimes I just want to give up

especially even if I did my best but my grades aren’t high or my pt’s got a low

score”.

P-Three “academic works influences my mental health through critical

thinking. this helps me in developing my ability not only by learning but dealing

with certain actions with creativity and effective ways”.

P-Four “I think the influence of academic works to my mental health is that, it

gives me stress, because sometimes there are instances in which the teachers

give tasks simultaneously and must be pass before the due date ”.

24

maayos sa pakiramdam. Nagiging balisa at pagod. Pero kapag natapos na ang

lahat ng gawain ay nakakaginhawa.

-I think, academic work affects my mental health if academic works are

simultaneously given. I become active and I had to tell my parents that I’m going

to be late because of school activities. Sometimes in the process of doing the

academic works cause undesirable feeling. I become anxious and laughing. But

when all work is done, I feel joy”.

P-Six “Academic works can influence you either positively or not. If you

succeed in complying the tasks you need to get done, you feel fulfilled; thus it

creates an idea that you`re doing great, this can boost your confidence to strive

more. The latter can cause anxiety and even depression since failures from sailing

through these academic works can exhaust you and trigger unwanted thoughts,

the effects will depend on how you deal with academics”.

Objective II. How do senior high students manage the challenges of academic

works?

P-One “I cope up by finding a little bit of time for me to eat and to refresh my

brain and I really make sure that all of my hardworks and sleepless nights would

pay off and i will pay those sleep that ive missed and that’s how i cope up with

the situation”.

P-Two “ I try to make a schedule if what schoolwork should I do first and I

also make sure to manage my time so that It won’t be a hassle for me and I won’t

be stressed”.
25

P-Three “i cope up with the stresses and pressures whenever given a lot of

academic works through time management and self motivation “.

P- Four “ I am able to manage these task by doing the hard one first”

panahon

-If the academic works are simultaneously given. I manage it in a way that I

will not extend. I must first finish the requirement to pass on that day or earlier

time. Then it's time to finish the next one. Until you finish doing everything and I

do not waste time”.

P-Six “When I`m given tons of academic works, which usually happens I try to

think about the consequences of my decisions. If I`ll choose procrastination, I`ll be

the one to suffer eventually so I try to finish my tasks optimistically. I also reward

myself after finishing them”.

Discussions

Common Points

The answers for the objective question number 1 which is “ What are the

influences of academic works to the mental health of senior high students “are
26

pointing in to 5 thoughts: Stress, Unhealthy, Two-edged, and Critical thinking

and become active. The thought stress includes being stress because of heavy

academic workload and have the same deadline. It also includes being stress

because of worrying to have a fail grade. The next influence is Unhealthy, being

depressed, anxious and stressed is one of the things that influences the

perceptions of research participants in doing their academic works. The term

two-edged means capable of being good and bad or in both ways (Lee,2016). The

next influence stated by the research participants is Critical thinking, it means

learning, thinking, and analysing that go beyond the memorization and recall of

information and facts. And the last influence is they become active, it includes

being active in school, doing their academic works or tasked assigned to them.

Figure 1 shows the what were the answers of the participants from our

questions for both objective questions. It shows that the influences of academic

works can be both positive and negative, in the negative influences the objective

number 2 was involved by being a coping mechanism based on the answers of

the research participants.

Stress

Some of the researcher participants pointed out that the influence of

Academic works to their mental mental health is it gives them stress. According

to P-One’s answer “ Sometimes I feel stress because of many workloads that

needs to be done ASAP(As soon as possible) “. She also added that the influence

of academic works to her mental health will lead her to have a cramming or

skipping meals and doesn’t have enough sleep.” I always do this thing called
28

cramming that leads to skipping meals and having not enough sleep”. P-Four has

also the same perception with P-One, according to P-Four’s answer “ I think the

influence of academic works to my mental health is that, it gives me stress”.

P-Four also pointed out the reason why is he feeling stress “ because sometimes

there are instances in which the teachers give tasks simultaneously and must be

pass before the due date “. According to P-Four and P-One’s answer, stress is the

influence of academic works to their mental health because the teachers give

them heavy academic workload that were simultaneously given.

Unhealthy

One of the research participants pointed out that the influence of academic

works to their mental health is bad.” I think that the influence of academic works

in my mental health is really bad”.(P-Two,19). P-Two also pointed out the

reasons why academic works is bad for our mental health.” Because most of us

students know that grades are really important and it’s what define us as a

students”. P-Two also added “ If we fail on a specific subject it can reduce our

self-confidence and it also makes us feel disappointed within ourselves”.

Disappointment means it is the state of feeling sad because something has not

happened or something is not as good as you hoped. According from P-Two

answer, the influence of academic works is bad for our health because of

achieving passing grades because P-Two said that grades define us. If they fail it

can reduce self-confidence and feel disappointment to their selves. In other

29

words, grade is the major factor why P-Two’s answered “It is bad for our mental

health”.

Two-Edged

One of the research participants named P-Six pointed out that the influence

of academic works to their mental health can be both positive and negative, as

(P-Six,19) said “ Academic works can affect you either positively or not”. P-Six

also added why it is positive and negative “ It can boost your confidence to strive

more if you succeed, the latter can cause anxiety and even depression since

failures from sailing through these academic works can exhaust you and trigger

unwanted thoughts”. In summary of P-Six answer, academic works can boost

your confidence to strive more while the latter can cause anxiety and depression

because of failures sailing through the academic works, and it can trigger

unwanted thoughts such as thinking that you might get fail grade that will be

the cause of feeling anxious.

Critical Thinking

One of the research participants indicated that the influence of academic

works to their mental health can improve their critical thinking skills “ Academic

works influences my mental health through critical thinking”.(P-Three,19) Critical

thinking occurs when students are analysing, evaluating, interpreting, or

synthesizing information and applying creative thought to form an argument,

solve a problem, or reach a conclusion (Edglossary,2013). According to P-Three,

the academic works can help her to improve her ability to learn and ability to
30

deal with certain actions with creativity and effective ways “It helps me in

developing my ability not only by learning but dealing with certain actions with

creativity and effective ways”(P-Three,19).

Become active

One of the research participants pointed out that the influence of academic

works to their mental health is he can become active because if he is given a

simultaneous tasks by the teacher, what comes up to his mind is he needs to

finish it one-by-one until the tasks are all finished“ I became active and alert to

school activities because when there’s a simultaneous academic works you need

to work first to the first task that was given then after I finished it another task

that needs to be finished because there will be another task to work”(P-Five,19).

In other words, the simultaneous academic works help him to be active and stay

alert in school.

The answers from the objective question number 2 which is “How does the

senior high students manage the challenges of the academic works to their

mental health ?”, are pointing to 2 thoughts: time management and Avoid

procrastination.

Time management
31

Most of the researchers pointed out that to manage the challenges of

academic works to their mental is to manage your time effectively” I try to make

a schedule if what school work should I do first”(P-Two,19). Making a schedule in

managing the challenges of academic works is important because it plays an

important role in ordering the tasks that you need to complete first. P-Six has

also the same answer with P-One “I cope up with stress and pressures whenever

given a lot of academic works through time management”.P-Five stated that when

there’s a simultaneous task, he usually make it simpler so that he can pass it

earlier or it depends on the schedule of passing the task” I can manage it by not

making it perfect. I will do first the task that needs to be finished and passed

earlier”.According to P-Four he passes his academic works by doing the hard

one first”I am able to manage these task by doing the hard one first”.Passing first

the academic work that needs to be passed earlier also plays an important role

in managing your time. Managing your time doesn’t always mean that you are

going to based on the academic works, it is also important to make a time for

yourself ”I cope up by finding a little bit of time for me to eat and refresh my

brain”.(P-One). Making a time for yourself will be helpful because it will be your

booster in doing your academic works faster or in other words, it will improve

your productivity.

Avoid procrastination

One of the research participants named P-Three stated that to manage the

challenges of the academic works you need to think about the consequences and
32

decide what to choose if it’s either procrastination or finish the task

optimistically “When I’m given a tons of academic works , which usually happens,

I try to think about the consequences of my decisions. If I’ll choose procrastination,

I’ll be the one to suffer eventually, so I try to finish my tasks optimistically”.

Procrastination means the action of delaying or postponing something.

Procrastinating is very common to students that’s why you need to finish your

task optimistically.

Chapter V

Summary,Conclusions, and Recommendation

This chapter looks at the summary, conclusions, recommendations relating

to studies and recommendation for further research.

Summary

This research was conducted for the purpose of determining the influences

of academic works to the mental health of senior high students and how they

manage the challenges of academic works. Narrative approach was used in this

research. There were Six research participants in this study and it was

conducted at Notre Dame Of Cotabato. Looking at the the participant’s

perception to the influence of academic works to their mental health, they have

different answers. These influences that were identified by the participants are

(1) Being stress, (2) Unhealthy, (3)Improves Critical Thinking, (4)Two-Edged, and

(5)Becoming active. The coping mechanism on the challenges of academic works

as viewed by the participants are time management and avoiding

procrastination.

Conclusions

Based on the results for objective question number 1, it was found out that

the influences of academic works to the mental health of senior high students

are positive and negative. The influence of academic works to their mental

health cannot be told if it is has a negative influence to their mental health or not.
34

According to some of the research participants, the negative influence occurs

when there are so many tasks that need to be done especially if it was given

simultaneously by the teacher. However, some research participants believed

that this tasks simultaneously given by the teacher will help them to improve

their learning ability, activeness in school and their critical thinking skills. In

addition, one of the major contributor of the negative influence of academic

works is time. Time is crucial when it comes to finishing the academic works

because there will always be a deadline for passing them. When it comes to

deadline of passing especially if you are not done yet, you tend to feel fear or

anxious because if you are not able to pass it you might get low grades. Grade is

also one of the major contributor of being anxious or can trigger unwanted

thoughts that will lead to having a mental problems. Therefore, the positive

influence of academic works to their mental health is dependent to the time,

grade and heavy academic workload that was simultaneously given. While the

negative influences of academic works to their mental health is even though

there’s a ton of it and a short duration of working it, it can still help them in

improving their learning ability, activeness in school and their critical thinking

skill.

Based on the results for objective question number 2, it was found out that

to manage the challenges of academic works is you need to make your time

efficiently and effectively. In managing your time don’t focus always on

scheduling your academic works, you also need to schedule the time for yourself

in order to boost yourself to improve your productivity. The result also stated
35

that you need to avoid procrastinating your academic works and think for a

consequences if you couldn’t pass your academic works. Therefore, in managing

the challenges of academic works is you need to manage your time, have a time

for yourself, do not procrastinate or delay in doing your academic works, always

think about the consequences that you will get if you couldn’t manage the

challenges of academic works and be optimistic.

Recommendations

I.Recommendations relating to studies

In spite of all the mixed answers coming from the participants, it is

important to know that the academic works will give you challenges always. The

conclusions do suggest practical strategies or tips on how will you manage the

challenges of the academic works influencing your mental health. These

strategies or tips could be described as follows:

1) Making a schedule in working your academic works.

2) Managing your time effectively and efficiently

3) Making a time for yourself that will serve as a booster and improving your

productivity

4) Do not procrastinate or delay the time in doing your academic works.

5) Always think of the consequences if you are unable to manage your time,

and finish the academic works.

36

II. Recommendations for further studies

Further studies obviously need to be much more broadly based. In this study

some suggestions have been made that can be more fully explored. For instance:

1) Influences of academic works to the mental health of senior high as

perceived by the graduate senior high students of NDC.

2) Higher number of research participants so that the researchers will really

know the influence of academic works to the mental health of SHS students.

3) An addition of related literature to support the discussions
