CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Background of the Study

Alcohol plays a complex role in any society as it mingles with many aspects of

sociocultural life. The consumption of alcohol, often to excess, has long been a feature

that affecting all ages and all walks of life. Critically though it is the impact that binge

drinking is having on young people which is perhaps of the greatest concern. Our study

is all about the perceptions of the Grade 11 HUMMS students towards the accretive

growth of alcoholic inclination in Saint Theresa College. This study will identify the

different perceptions and outlook of the students in Grade 11 HUMMS strand. Starting

drinking as a young person can result in a greater risk of developing long-term health

conditions in later life. The use of and abuse of alcohol is widespread among students.

The use of alcohol among the students has becomes a culture.

Kirmani & Suman (2010) examined that the perception and attitude of the

students towards alcohol and found that boys possessed higher psychological distress

by having a complimentary attitude towards the consumption of alcohol rather than the

girls. It is also believed that boys had high expectation to use alcohol leading to positive

outcomes while expectations of the girls lead to negative outcomes. An insignificant

relationship between peer group influence and students' attitudes towards school and

alcohol consumption. On the contrary, it is found that there was a positive significant

relationship between alcohol consumption and students' attitudes towards school.

(Mukama2010)

Everyone seems to be aware of the fact that drinking too much alcohol can cause

various of health conditions. But it hardly matters to those who drink. The widespread

use of alcohol on young people has led to the need to understand the reasons why

students drink alcohol. Since alcohol consumption among the students is very rampant

in our generation, there is a need to conduct this kind of research study for us to be able

to understand the behavior and perception of the students towards the Accretive growth

of Alcoholic Inclination.

The main goal of this study is to know the perception of the Grade 11 HUMSS

students of Saint Theresa College of Tandag Incorporated towards alcoholic inclination.

This research also aims to know the outlook, mindset and the perspective of the

students towards alcohol consumption. Though this research will not truly identify those

students who drink alcohol and those who do not. This will give us a better idea of the

reasons why some students tend to consume or drink alcohol for this will dig into their

minds. As a student in a Catholic institution, the researchers only wish to promote the

image and attributes to God.

Theoretical Framework

According to the social learning theory, students acquire behaviors and act them

out as a result of poor relationships. Specifically, delinquent behavior and antisocial

behavior disorders have been linked with inadequate psychological development and

excessive alcohol use. Personalities such as: antisocial disorders, depression, low self-

esteem, hyper activism and high novelty seeking behaviors have been considered

predictors of addiction, consistent with the personality theory (Sremac, 2010).

The life course theory strives to understand the different pathways of an

individual during their developmental phase. By looking at the process of development

throughout a lifetime, this theory employs only one perspective for understanding

human beings. The life course theory relates to emerging adulthood in the most

conventional sense because the pathways people may embrace are everlasting.

According to the life course theory, individuals near each stage of development at

different times depending on external influences. Social influences and culture will

impact an individual’s development, such as cultural expectations and family

background.

This explores theories pertaining to excessive student drinking, and identifies the

three most relevant theories for understanding why students drink. Alcohol use is “tightly

woven into the social fabric of university life and brings social, economic, and personal

consequences” (Schulenberg et al., 2007, p. 3). It is necessary to investigate the

reasons underlying drinking to reduce negative consequences through a multi-dynamic

approach to the issue. Students reported drinking for many of the same reason adults

drink: to have fun, to be social, to become intoxicated, to display status and to ease

interactions among potential romantic partners (Sling, 2013). Sling (2013) explains that

students drink simply because they can. Without many responsibilities or priorities,

students have an abundance of free time. By watching others’ behavior, students learn

drinking is acceptable in social situations.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES ANDSTUDIES

This chapter discusses the literature and studies that are relevant to this paper

which provides the basis and direction to the study.

Liquor is positioned internationally as the eight-driving danger factor for death,

and tend for infection and incapacity (World Health Organization, 2011). Understudies

who participate in hard-core boozing are at an expanded danger of having scholarly

issues (College Drinking Prevention, 2005). Around a fourth of all school understudies

have persevered through scholarly results due to their drinking practices (NIAAA, 2013).

Scholastic issues that happen as a result of drinking are, yet not constrained to, the

accompanying: missing class, neglecting to do schoolwork, falling behind in classes,

doing inadequately on a test or assignments and getting lower grades than anticipated

(NIAAA, 2013). As indicated by College Drinking Prevention (2005), understudies who

did well in secondary school regularly demonstrated the impacts of liquor use in school

and how it can influence scholarly execution.

As per the representative interactionist point of view, individuals act dependent

on their discernments. People make implications through their encounters and

connections with others and after that demonstration dependent on these implications

10

they have shaped (Appelrouth 2011). In the event that those implications are seen as

positive, at that point that conduct will probably happen, yet on the off chance that those

implications are seen as negative, at that point the conduct is more averse to happen.

With regards to emblematic interactionism, one's drinking conduct is the result of one's

view of drinking. Along these lines, a positive or negative importance joined to drinking

will influence understudies' choice to drink liquor. This hypothesis gives a premise to

understanding the effect of recognition on drinking conduct. Emblematic interactionism

may give a comprehension of why understudies drink liquor and experience negative

drinking outcomes. In Denmark, there is a legitimate system that denies offering any

liquor to people younger than 16 and offering solid alcohol to people younger than 18,

however separated from these ages restrains there are no lawful confinements for

selling and utilizing liquor at colleges. In accordance with the absence of confinements

by law, most Danish colleges don't have their very own express decides that limit the

utilization of liquor. Truth be told, numerous college occasions effectively energize the

utilization of liquor. All the more explicitly, the presentation plans for rookies are often

focused on liquor utilization and are authoritatively marked as "getting alcoholic visits".

In any case, there is a developing worry that the solid connection between social plans

and liquor might prompt prohibition of understudies who go without liquor for religious,

social, or wellbeing reasons. When assessing explanations behind drinking, data is

accumulated from understudies, and endeavors are taken so as to recognize the

reasons basic hitting the bottle hard in the college populace.

Finlay, Ram, Maggs and Caldwell (2012) state, "changing the way of life of

overwhelming drinking on college grounds is an esteemed need of liquor and formative

scientists, counteractive action researchers, and school executives" (p. 1). More

research is required so as to determine the hidden speculations related with hitting the

bottle hard.

Local
Unknowingly, it is not only adults who are drinking but young people – even

teenagers. “Philippine law sets the minimum legal drinking age at 18 but underage

drinking is widespread,” Valbuena reported. “Most young people get alcohol from home

with or without their parents’ permission. They know how to obtain alcohol – they are

able to get it from friends or they can discreetly buy for themselves.” Information from

the WHO demonstrates that nearly 9% of the Philippines populace who are 15 years of

age and more established (assessed at 86 million) have a liquor use issue. What's

more, 25% of guys and 8.3% of females (15-85+ years) are overwhelming long-winded

consumers. A related and furthermore to a great extent unaddressed issue in the more

extensive Western Pacific area, and the Philippines specifically, is the job of liquor

showcasing and its potential connect to early liquor use among youth. Since the 1990s,

concern has developed about overwhelming drinking and liquor related hurt, and the

connection with the development in liquor showcasing that objectives youngsters.

In the Philippines it is aggravating that because of indulgent observing and

usage, liquor, for example, brew and hard beverages can without much of a stretch be

purchased in basic food item and comfort stores by youngsters. Our law sets the base

12
SAINT THERESA COLLEGE OF TANDAG, INC.

legitimate drinking age at 18, all things considered underage drinking is across the

board and pervasive. A decent number of youngsters get liquor from home. If not from

their home, they get hold of liquor from companions or they can tactfully purchase for

themselves as it is generally simple for an underage youngster in our nation to get liquor

from stores. Therefore, various instances of savagery; sexual and medication misuse

and suicide among Filipino adolescents have been ascribed to tipsiness or liquor

inebriation. Thus, this is already a developing worry in our general public particularly on

youth practices, just as to the way of life of our nation. This bill tries to ensure that our

country's childhood would do their duty in structure our country; banish minors from

drinking liquor, punish the individuals who abet them to access liquor and rebuff

foundations that offer liquor to minors.

Numerous Filipino youngsters, as most adolescents in the Western Pacific

locale, are getting to be routine consumers and are unconscious of the destructive

impacts of liquor misuse. Liquor utilization among the adolescent is nearing a disturbing

level, the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed yesterday, with upwards of 75

percent of the young in the locale swallowing alcohol at a normal of a few times each

week. In Pacific island nations like the Philippines, WHO noticed that going on a

drinking gorge is a typical practice. "Regardless of the way that 45 percent to 75 percent

of the youngsters in the Western Pacific district expend liquor consistently, there is poor

open familiarity with the destructive impacts of liquor misuse," it said. The Times of

Zambia online version (2009), reports how even with the base lawful drinking age of 18

years numerous youths beneath this age have kept mishandling liquor. A similar paper

13

reports how adolescents as youthful as nine a long time have been belittling drinking

spots and illicitly devouring inebriating alcohol.

The Post Newspaper online release (2009), saw that underage drinking in Zambia is on

the increment and is propagated by bar proprietors who don't keep the law that confines

every one of those who are underneath the age of 18 from expending liquor.

Howland et al. (2010) proposed that the watched mind-set unsettling influence

following inebriation was likely the consequence of rest unsettling influences because of

liquor utilization. This contention is reliable with the discoveries from an investigation by

Singleton and Wolfson (2009). They discovered that poor rest plans (e.g., later rest

wake designs, more prominent postponement between weekday furthermore,

weeknight sleep times) are related with the volume of liquor devoured. Also, a study by

Kenny et al. (2013) uncovered that poor rest quality is emphatically identified with liquor

utilization and the experience of negative liquor outcomes. There is proof that a

considerable lot of the antagonistic impacts of liquor use are experienced at higher

levels for understudies with Greek life affiliations. In particular, Ragsdale et al. (2012)

uncovered that crew bingers were essentially more probable to participate in physical

battles and drive affected by liquor than non-Greek male bingers. Sorority bingers, then

again, were observed to be altogether bound to be harmed, drive affected by liquor, be

explicitly misled, and to take part in undesirable sex than non-Greek female bingers.

An ongoing review of Indiana undergrads analyzed 16 liquor results and found

that the most widely recognized was having an aftereffect (59.8%), trailed by inclination

awful/blameworthy about drinking (26.3%), and passing out (26.2%). While just 10% of

students announced getting injured or harmed because of their drinking (King and

Mikyoung 2014), Ragsdale et al. (2012) uncovered that this probability is right around

multiple times more prominent for hitting the bottle hard students.

In the Philippines, drinking is more adequate among young ladies than smoking.

By the by, it is as yet the case that it is viewed as progressively proper for men than for

ladies to drink. Guardians are increasingly careless with young men, giving them more

opportunity to drink liquor than their sisters. The youngsters said their family,

companions, and the broad communications have impacted them to try different things

with drinking liquor. Underscoring the basic job that the family plays in youth practices,

youngsters appear to submit their general direction to them possess guardians'

mentalities and conduct. Along these lines, a kid who grows up with a drunkard father is

bound to end up one himself. (Joyce P. Villanueva 2010). A cross-sectional study was

led to survey the liquor drinking conduct of teenagers and its related elements among

280 third year and fourth year secondary school understudies none purposely chose

secondary school in Baguio, Philippines during January, 2008. A high extent of

respondents in this examination (74.3%) were 15-16 years of age. The information we

reanalyzed by utilizing MINITAB. Chi-Square test was utilized for testing relationship

between the reliant variable and autonomous factors and criteria for measurable

noteworthiness was set atα = 0.05. There were 30.8% of understudies as consumers;

47.1% of consumers were guys and 18.2%were females. There was a measurably

noteworthy relationship between liquor drinking conduct and being male (Chi-Square =

26.9; p-esteem = <0.001). 62.9% of the understudy consumers expended > 1 container

of liquor for every day. Frame of mind towards ideal to drinking, having the option to

bear the cost of alcohol and parental impact were likewise decidedly measurably

fundamentally connected with liquor drinking conduct (Chi-Square = 9.82; p-esteem =

0.01), (Chi-Square= 28.34; p-esteem = <0.001) and (Chi-Square = 30.62; p-esteem =

<0.001) respectively. It was reasoned that family impact, demeanor towards drinking and

moderateness of alcohol were the contributing elements to understudies' drinking

conduct. It was prescribed that families, school and city authorities ought to effectively

be engaged with starting exercises against liquor drinking among teenagers.

Insights Gained

Alcohol is the drug of choice among youth. Many young people are experiencing

the consequences of drinking too much, at too early an age. As a result, underage

drinking is a leading public health problem in this country. Furthermore, the active

participation and cooperation of the government officials in ensuring that the young

people are fully aware of the effects in consuming alcohol at a very young age is very

necessary. Punish the individuals who abet them to access liquor and rebuff

foundations that offer liquor to minors.

Alcohol consumption is widespread among preteens and teens. According to one

national survey, one in four eighth graders reports drinking alcohol within the past

month and 18% of eighth graders have gotten drunk at least once in the past year.

While many people may think that drinking is less serious than drug use, that is not the

case. Alcohol is a depressant, which means that it slows body functions, including

heartbeat, breathing, and thinking. Since alcohol consumption among the students is

very rampant in our generation, there is a need to conduct this kind of research study

for us to be able to understand the behavior and perception of the students towards the

Accretive growth of Alcoholic Inclination.

This study looks into the Perception of the Grade 11 HUMSS Students towards

the Accretive Growth of Alcoholic Inclination. We will gather information about the

student’s perception through the process of producing a set of survey questionnaire to

the chosen respondents. The goal is to know the student’s expectations and mind set

about alcohol or alcoholic inclination.

Students’ response to perception towards the accretive growth of alcoholic

inclination is what the researchers aim to reveal. In conclusion, the respondents’

perception has significant relation with their past experiences with alcohol.
