Welcome to the first content module of the MOOC Electric Cars: Business.

The first modern charge points in the 21st century were huge and hugely expensive.
They would stand in front of a town hall to show that a municipality was thinking
forward, even if there was no electric vehicle to actually use it yet. In 2018, the
Netherlands had 30.000 public and 75.000 private charge points. In this module, we
will introduce you to the different types of charging (destination charging vs. fast
charging etc.), smart charging and roles of the different stakeholders in charging
infrastructure.

Charging infrastructure is one of the first big developments for electricity grids in over
a century. It is used in conjunction with internet technology in order to move towards
a decentralized bi-directional smart grid. This creates big shifts in roles and requires
the removal of a lot of antiquated regulation and the introduction of new open
standards. But when done right, it can democratize the energy system and move
towards clean and abundant energy for all at a lower price. In other words, we have
a lot to discuss!

Here is a brief overview of the topics that will be discussed in this module:

 Destination charging and its various types

 Fast charging and future modes of charging

 Smart charging and smart grids and its advantages

 Role of open standards in smart charging

 Stakeholders in charging infrastructure and the power distribution
