Geno: Motivations

Coach Geno Auriemma has all the important characteristics it takes to be a successful
basketball coach. He has demonstrated his coaching skills time and time again leading
his team to eight championships. Coach Geno knows how to communicate and
motivate his athletes to perform their best. He uses the carrot and stick approach to
keep athletes engaged and eager to improve their skills. The carrot and stick approach
is used for motivation, once an athlete becomes comfortable with a play, coach Geno
changes the rules and makes plays harder to perform. One of the ways he challenges
his team is by having different scenarios for example having five offence players and
four players on defense guarding the offensive five.

What makes coach Geno stand out from most coaches is that he does not settle for a
good or good enough, he strives for the best. He pushes his athletes to lengths they
didn't even think was possible. In the video Coach Geno states “ Don't talk about how
good you want to be, show me how good you want to be”.

Coach Geno is very knowledgeable when it comes to coaching basketball. He is very

engaged with every one of his players and aware of their strengths and weaknesses.
Having a knowledgeable coach is very crucial to success in a team because the coach
has the power and resources to make the right decisions. The more knowledgeable a
coach is the better advantage a team has to winning.

After watching the video I can agree with coach Geno’s coaching style. I think it's
important for coaches to be passionate about their work because then it wont feel like
work. Coach Geno shows up to practices ready to motivate and push his team. His
ability to lead a team to success have been proven multiple times.
