Part A Step 4e
Part B Step 2

Name of U of A class: CSCE 2214: Computer Organizations

Instructor: Dr. David Andrews

Part C Step 2

1.) Who is the Author?

-Takanobu Nomura and Satoshi Hattori
2.) What is the name of the theses/dissertation?
-Estimation of the average causal effect via multiple propensity score stratification
3.) What is the year of the theses/dissertation?
-Published 2017
4.) What institution did the author go to? (Usually on title page.)
-Dr. Takanobu Nomura attended Kurume University and Dr. Satoshi Hattori attended Osaka
University
5.) What was the purpose of the study? (You can retype it. It’s okay if it is word for word.)
-“Suppose we are interested in estimating the average causal effect (ACE) for the population
mean from observational study. Because of simplicity and ease of interpretation, stratification
by a propensity score (PS) is widely used to adjust for influence of confounding factors in
estimation of the ACE. Appropriateness of the estimation by the PS stratification relies on
correct specification of the PS. We propose an estimator based on stratification with multiple PS
models by clustering techniques instead of model selection. If one of them correctly specifies,
the proposed estimator removes bias and thus is more robust than the standard PS
stratification.”
6.) What was the conclusion of the study? (Usually on last page. You can type it word for word.)
-The conclusion of the study led to the knowledge that combining several PS models with
nonlinear or machine learning techniques so that risk can be further reduced.
7.) Why would this particular study be important in your field? (We are assuming it is important.)
-This particular study is important to my field of study because it decreases the risk when using
different machine learning techniques.
8.) Pretend that you want to do a similar study to this one. What would you do different? Why?
-If I was to do another study similar, I would change the focus to primarily machine learning to
focus on the ability to create multiple codes and equations with less chance of them crashing
and using their similarities to find the mistakes. With this it would be easier to create larger
scale codes with less large-scale mistakes such as using two sets of rats in a pharmaceutical
testing to create a control group.

Part C Step 3

1.) Who is the professor that you have taken a class with? Or a professor that you are currently
taking a class with?
-Susan E. Gauch
2.) What is the name of the class? Give the alpha code AND number. (Example, CIED 1003)
-CSCE 2004
3.) What year did he/she write their dissertation?
-1990
4.) What is the name of the dissertation?
-Information to Users (An expert system for searching in full-text)
5.) What institution did the professor go to when he/she published their dissertation?
-The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
6.) Skip to the end of the dissertation. What was the conclusion of the study? (You can type this
word for word.)
-The conclusion of the study showed that all of Dr. Gauch’s code allowed for a better system for
searching through large and full pieces of text.
