Abstract:-

Today’s world demands skill population, as only skill population can provide sustainable
growth of the society and skill is generated after a proper training and education. Education
institutes like colleges and schools provide such training and education on the base level. Thus,
no doubt it is important for the students to attend the lectures of such institutes. But it is a bitter
truth that, even after all the strict rules, specially made to improve students attendance, generally
these institutes are not getting those figures that satisfy. This research has been conducted to find
out the reasons and solutions for student’s absenteeism, we approach for this research through
primary data as well secondary data. We did survey through physical and online questionnaire
both. After talking to students and teacher both, we have provided some possible solutions.

Keywords: skill population, sustainable growth, student’s absenteeism, student’s attendance,

training and education

OBJECTIVE:-

 To study the concept of student absenteeism.

 To find out the reasons for student absenteeism.
 To find the possible solutions for student absenteeism.

HYPOTHESIS:-

HYPOTHESIS 1-
H0: Boys miss college lectures more than girls.

H1: Girls miss the lectures more than boys.

HYPOTHESIS 2-

H0: Teachers who teach in college as well as in coaching have same attendance at both the
places.

H1: Teachers who teach in college as well as in coaching have different attendance at both the
places.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY:-

 Our research paper is mainly based on primary data.

 We did separate survey for college students and teachers.
 For students we conducted online survey.
 For teachers we conducted physical survey
 We got 326 student respondents and 112 teacher respondent.

INTRODUCTION:-

Student absenteeism to lectures and tutorials has become one of the greatest encumbrances of
college success. It is a matter of concern because it can lead to insufficient learning on the part of
those absent and a degree of agitation on the conduct of the classes for those who are present
(Longhurst, 1999). Absenteeism has become a general problem to universities and colleges
(FEFC, 1997). It refers to the conduct of students not attending scheduled meetings in terms of
classes, lectures, tutorials, workshops or seminars without prior permission from the faculty or
against default college policy on absenteeism. The idea of dissemination of knowledge and
information from the teacher in a formal meeting is that students be able to present and acquire
them in a lively environment. It would be very difficult to gain knowledge only through copying
notes taken by a classmate because the extent of knowledge and know how will undesirably be
limited to what one can make out of the copied notes.

NEED OF THE STUDY:-

Student nonattendance is a problem that extends much further than the university. It affects the
student, the family, and the community. In an environment of stiff competition for jobs,
graduates should possess high integrity and capabilities to win themselves a secured career.
Unfortunately, negative attitude associated with truancy has become the most powerful predictor
of delinquency and negligence among those students (DeKalb, 1999). As such, absenteeism is
detrimental to students' achievement, promotion, graduation, self-esteem, and employment
potential.
A number of studies have emphasized on the reasons behind students being absent from their
classes. Unfortunately, not many have really focused on absenteeism at the college or university
level. Longhurst (1999) claims that studies such as the one conducted by Adjei Barwuah and
Phill Walkley (1997) were based on general impressions of college management rather than any
systematic gathering of data from actual students. For this reason, Longhurst (1999) has carried
out his own study based on data congregated from students in a further education college. It is
hoped that through real studies and analysis of events and information from the students, we are
able to find solutions to solve this major hindrance to academic excellence among students in
universities. The first step to getting the root of absenteeism is dedicating a reasonable amount of
time to seriously study the situation. After careful analysis, the causes of absenteeism are often
self-evident (Applesforhealth.com, 2000).

TESTING OF HYPOTHESIS:-

HYPOTHESIS 1-

1. How often do you attend college lectures?

GENDER No. of Respondents %

MALE
Once in a week 42 27.27%
More than one in a 50 31.81%
Week
Hardly sit any 57 36.36%
Lectures
I sit all Lectures 7 4.56%
TOTAL 156 100%
FEMALE
Once in a week 50 29.16%
More than one in a 63 37.50%
Week
Hardly sit any 29 16.68%
Lectures
I sit all Lectures 28 16.66%
TOTAL 170 100%
16.68% girls said that they hardly sit any lectures whereas 36.36% boys said the same. So our
null hypothesis is accepted.

Boys miss college lectures more than girls.

HYPOTHESIS 2-

Comparison between student’s attendance in college and coaching centre of the same professor.

OPTIONS COLLEGE COLLEGE COACHING COACHI

ATTANDANCE % ATTANDANCE NG %
0-40 19 22% 0 0%
41-60 26 30% 4 4%
61-80 45 38% 9 10%
81-100 18 20% 75 86%
TOTAL 88 100% 88 100%

Same professors whom lectures are attended by 20% students in college, receives 86%
attendance in coaching centre. Thus, our null hypothesis is rejected, and we approached to our
alternative hypothesis that is;

Teachers who teach in college as well as in coaching have different attendance at both the
places.

FINDINGS:-

1. Approx 26% students hardly sit any college lectures.

2. 47.50 students sit all the coaching lectures.
3. An Approx 36% student feels, it’s not worth to sit college lectures.
4. 59% students rated their college teaching staff 4-7 out of 10.
5. 40% students want their college to improve its teaching staff, infrastructure and
management.
6. 62.5% teachers face all the three given problems i.e., too much to teach in less time,
crowd of the students and politics between teachers.
7. 56.25% teachers feels that use of latest technology in teaching can improve students
attendance in college.
8. Boys bunk more lectures than girls.
9. Same professors whom lectures are attended by 20% students in college, receives 86% in
coaching centre.

SUGGESTIONS:-
BY TEACHERS-

1. Should teach students in their way.

2. I recommend to blend latest developments in the Subject be appraised to members in
each lecture that makes the student more industry friendly when they complete
Management Education.
3. Attendance declaration shall be followed seriously i.e. parents to be informed.
4. Additional exams are mockery giving leeway to students.
5. Counseling for students who feel studies are boring, at the same time innovative and
interactive teaching methodology shall be followed.
6. Working students or students taking coaching for CS or CA should join distance
education and not college.
7. Practical training should be given to students.

BY STUDENTS-

1. College timing should from 8 or 9.

2. Innovative teaching methods.
3. Management of the college should improve.
4. Use of media in studies.
5. Practical knowledge.
6. Better infrastructure.
7. Lectures should contain both studies and entertainment.
8. Good teacher student relationship.

BY AUTHORS-

Such strategies should be made which contains, perfect blend of professors and students
suggestions.

CONCLUSION:-

1. Students are not satisfied with college lectures.

2. Same professor receives double attendance of students in coaching centre than in college.
3. Teachers need to improve their teaching methods.
4. Latest technology should be used in teaching.
5. Frame such a time of college lectures which is acceptable to both professors and students.
