The elevated ground she is standing on is all snow. On the edge are some green grass. The snow

grass is also sprouting out of the snow.

You have 30 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to speak. In your response, make sure you show that you recognize a

Q#10 (30 seconds to prepare; 60 seconds to speak)

Teacher:

Hello, this is Alvin, the building manager. Since you are the president of the tenants association, I
thought you would be the right person to talk to. As you know we have been having a lot of
problems without old elevators. We will have to replace these elevators as soon as possible. If we
don’t resolve this matter soon it could create a bigger problem later. However, I know this is
going to be a big inconvenience to our tenants, especially the ones on the higher floors. But this is
something that needs to be done. I have been trying to figure out a good time to schedule this but
I wasn’t sure when the best time would be. That’s why I am calling you. I know that the monthly
tenants association meeting is tomorrow and I was hoping you could ask everybody when would
be best to schedule this installation. I would really like to speak to you as soon as possible. Please
call me back at 712-1127. Once again, this is Alvin, the building manager. Thanks! Bye!

Sample Answer:

Hello, Alvin. This is Katie, the president of the tenants association. I got your message saying that
you are planning to replace the elevators. However, there is a problem in finding the best time to
schedule the work. So you’d like for me to check on this matter.

First of all, I am sorry to hear about the situation. However, I am happy to say that there is a way
to help out. After checking into the situation, I came up with the following solutions.

Let us do a survey to fix a date convenient to all the residents. This should be helpful in finding
the most convenient day and time to do this. Also, why don’t you hire extra workers to do the
work? It would reduce the time needed to finish fixing the elevator problem. That way it would
be less inconvenient for the residents.

These are my suggestions. If you need any help, feel free to call me back any time. Thank you. Bye.
Teacher’s Manual Lesson 1 [TOEIC Speaking 8]

Part F. Question 11: Express an opinion

Directions: In this part of the test, you will give your opinion about a specific topic. Be sure to say as
much as you can in the time allowed. You will have 15 seconds to prepare. Then you will have 60 seconds to speak.

Q#11 (15 seconds to prepare; 60 seconds to speak)

Teacher:

Do you think that companies nowadays provide less quality and service to make a larger profit,
compared to those of the past?

Give specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

Sample Answer:

I agree that companies nowadays provide less quality and service to make a larger profit,
compared to those of the past.

There are several reasons to support my opinion. One is with backpacks. When these become
popular, companies always raise their prices. For example, about two years ago, I bought a
backpack from Macy’s. It was $50 but the quality was really good, so the price was reasonable. I
was really satisfied and I used it very often. One day, I lost my backpack. I really liked my old
backpack so I decided to buy one from the same brand again. I visited the store with $50 and
asked the clerk but he said the old model was not on sale anymore. He recommended I purchase
a new model. The newer model was $100 but the quality was worse than the previous one. As
they become popular, they raised their prices but the quality became worse.

I disagree that companies nowadays provide less quality and service to make a larger profit,
compared to those of the past.

For example, about twenty years ago, when people saw the first mobile phone, they didn’t know
much about it. It was very expensive and the only function it had was just making phone calls.
People were willing to pay $1000 for that because it was new. But nowadays, cell phones and
smart phones have a lot in them. They have better functions and are becoming even better
because customers want better things. Consumers are looking for better quality items without
spending as much money.

That is why I disagree with the first statement.

son. The mother is wearing a red long sleeves blouse and a pair of jeans, while the boy has a cap,
a backpack, a pair of shorts and rubber shoes. They are walking hand-in-hand.

It looks like it’s early in the morning, about the time when kids go to school. They are walking a
long strip of walkway. This is parallel to the street. Maybe they are going to their car, so the mom
can bring her son to school. Or maybe they’re just walking to school because it’s near.

The pathway has some lawn on one side, and some trees and bushes on the other side. The
weather seems perfect. It could be spring.

Q#5 (no preparation/ respond immediately; 15 seconds to answer)

Q#6 (no preparation/ respond immediately; 30 seconds to answer)

camping trip. I looked through some Web sites and there were lots of people who have camping
as a hobby. They gave useful information about camping sites, tools, and equipment that I had to

There are several reasons to support my opinion. Most of all, I cannot focus in a library. For
example, about a month ago, it was a midterm exam period in school. So I decided to study in a
library. At first, it was really good to study. I was able to focus in a private space. Also, it was
quiet and the atmosphere was perfect. However, my friends came to the library to study. One of
them started to say that he was hungry and one of them tried to keep talking with me about his
problems. Moreover, many people walked around the study area. These things were really
annoying and I was not able to focus on studying. On the next day, I studied at home. It was
really comfortable. I was able to get some food and beverages and my desk and chair were
familiar. So I was able to focus on studying. Thanks to the comforts of my home, I got good
grades.

Q#10 (30 seconds to prepare; 60 seconds to speak)

Teacher:

Hello, this is Vince Gilmore. I’m the sales manager at Alcove Clothing Company. Our sales staff
has been doing an excellent job, and sales have increased every month this year. Their hard work
and dedication has been a huge part of our success. Recently, there have been complaints about
their pay and they have been very unhappy about it. It is true that their pay has been the same for
several years now and without them the store would not be able to operate effectively. Giving the
sales staff a higher pay might motivate them to do an even better job. Giving them a little more
might show that we are dedicated to our employees as well. I know this is a very difficult issue
but I feel that this is important for our store to continue its success. Since you are the director of
sales and marketing I wanted to ask you if this is something that could be done. I know that with
your experience you may also have other ideas on how to satisfy or employee’s requests. Please
give me a call back to discuss this issue at extension 45. Thank you!

Sample Answer:

Hello. This is Naomi, the director of sales and marketing. I got your message saying that you are
the manager and were successful with your employees. However, there is a problem because you
want to reward your employees in a different way. So you’d like for me to check on this matter.

First of all, I am happy to hear about the success and I am happy to say that there is a way to help
you out. After checking into the situation, I came up with some solutions.

I think it is possible to raise their salary since we have a large enough budget. Also, I recommend

Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Some people say that we should invest in developing alternative energy sources to replace unrenewable
ones like fossil fuel.

Please support your opinion with reasons and examples.

Sample Answer:

I don’t think we should invest in developing energy to replace current energy. Most of all, we can
guarantee power every day and in every situation. Most alternative energy depends on the
weather conditions. When it’s cloudy, we cannot generate power from solar power generators.
When there’s no wind, we cannot get power from wind generators. They are not stable power
sources. Secondly, alternative energy has low efficiency and a high cost structure. Studying
alternative energy, maintaining the facilities, and repairing machinery costs a lot. Alternative
energy technology is in early stages of development. Also it needs much more time to be
commercialized. Based on this reason, we don’t need to invest in developing alternative energy.

Q#10 (30 seconds to prepare; 60 seconds to speak)

Teacher:

Hello, this is Betty Phoenix, a member of the alumni association of Carson Community College.
As you know our school reunion will be held next month and I am in charge of contracting as
many people as possible to have them come to the event. We have prepared a lot of things for this
reunion as it is the first time to actually have a reunion party since the school opened. We will
have an award ceremony to thank some of our teachers for their great work. And there will be
lots of recreational activities happening at the party. This would all work out only if lots of
people show up on the day of the event. As the person in charge of contacting all the alumni
members, I am trying to think of some efficient ways to reach everyone. That is why I am calling
you. Since you have been doing lots of secretarial duties for your boss, I guess you would know
some great ways to contact many people. I have about 2,000 people on the list of graduates. I
really need your help or else I might end up calling these people on the list. Please call me. My
number is 390-4425. Talk to you soon! Bye!

Sample Answer:

Hello, Betty! This is Dave Woodard. I just heard your message about our school’s first reunion
that you are planning to hold soon. I guess it would be a problem to reach such a huge number of
people. So you would like for me to help you out on this matter.

Firs of all, I am happy to hear that our school will be holding a reunion soon. I am glad to tell you
that I have some great ideas about contacting all those people. After checking into the situation, I
came up with the following solutions.

I think the best way is to send e-mails to all those people. You should have no problem getting
their e-mail addresses from the registrar. However, there might be some who cannot be reached
by e-mail. In that case, why don’t you post a notice in the local newspaper about this event? I am
pretty sure lots of graduates living in the community could read about it.

These are my suggestions. If you need more help, feel free to call me back anytime. Good luck!
Bye!

These days more and more companies have lots of interests in holding on to their regular customers rather
than attracting new customers.

Please support your opinion with reasons and examples.

Sample Answer:

I agree with this statement. I think these days more and more companies have more interest in
retaining regular customers than attracting new customers.

The following reasons support my opinion. Most of all, regular customers already have loyalty
toward the company. They tend to trust the company’s services and product quality. They are
willing to open their wallet to buy new products. The company can take advantage of the fact
that these customers are more active buyers. Moreover, their satisfaction makes them seldom
change their preference to a loyal product. Therefore, the company can expect stable income and
does not need to incur huge costs on advertisements to attract new customers. Also they tend to
recommend the company’s services and products to their friends and family. As a result, the
company can expect additional future customers connected to them. For these reasons, my
opinion is that regular customers are more valuable.

Teacher:

Hello, this is Veronica Nunez from RSVP Movie Theater’s Customer Service Department. This
year I sent Christmas cards attaching a customer satisfaction survey to our regular customers by
email. The survey was entitled “How Can We Satisfy Your Needs Next Year?” Thanks to this
survey, we can better understand our customers’ needs. Most of them asked that we provide
better customer service, especially to our regular customers. If we offer improved customer
service, they are willing to visit our movie theater more frequently. However, I was just hired last
month and this is my first project. I have no idea how to attract more customers to visit and
watch movies. As you are my boss with similar experiences, I think you can give me some
brilliant ideas. Please help me with your advice. I await your phone call.

Sample Answer:

Hello, Veronica Nunez, this is your boss, Calvin Lang speaking. In your message you said you
conducted a survey this year. You said that most of our customers require better service for
regular customers. However, because you were just hired, you have no idea how we can attract
customers. Here are some suggestions to resolve this problem. I think we should create a VIP
lounge where customers can wait in comfort. We can install TVs on the walls and advise our
newly released films on those TVs. That might be useful for advertising the storylines.

Otherwise, we’d better offer more spacious parking lots especially on weekends. We can easily
rent parking lots from the buildings around our shopping mall. Office buildings are empty on
weekends, so we can use their parking lots at a lower cost.

I hope my ideas can help you resolve this problem. If you need more help, please don’t hesitate to
call me at any time. Bye.

Q#11 (15 seconds to prepare; 60 seconds to speak)

Teacher:

Which of the following is the most important thing for a person trying to get into a good college?

*A positive environment *Tutors *Studying hard

Give a specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

Sample Answer:

I think a positive environment is the most important thing for a person trying to get a good
college.

There are several reasons to support my opinion. Most of all, a positive environment makes a
positive person. For example, when I was in high school, there was a friend. His name was a Tom.
He had a positive environment. His parents always thought in positive ways and believed in him.
So he was affected by them. Actually, his grades were not good and he was not good at studying.
However, he thought in a positive way and he applied to a college that he wanted to attend.
Everybody thought that he would fail but he got an interview and the examiners decided to
accept him. They said that they found the positive side of him very attractive. Thanks to his
positive environment, he was able to think in a positive way and it helped him succeed.

(Tutors have a lot of experience in education and they know how to teach. For example, when I was in high school, I
wanted to get into a good college. However, my grades were not good at the moment. So I asked my tutor what I
should do. Since he had a lot of experience, he knew very well how to get better grades. At first, he schedules my study
plan in detail. And I followed the plan and his lectures. It was really good and the tips for studying were perfect. I
really enjoyed his guidance. After that, I was able to get better grades on the next exams. Thanks to him, I finished
school with good grades and I was able to get into a college that I wanted.)

(We need good grades to get into a good college and only studying can get you the best grade. For example, when I
was in high school, I got a bad result on my mid-term exam. I didn’t study much because I like to hang out with my
friends instead of focusing on school. I always went out to meet my friends after school. One day, I checked my grades
and it was shocking. I needed to get better grades in order to get into the college that I wanted. So I decided to change
my life. I started to study very hard. After that, I was able to get better grades and I succeeded getting into the college I
wanted.)

This is the reason why I support my opinion.

Q#10 (30 seconds to prepare; 60 seconds to speak)

Teacher:

Hello, my name is Cecile and I live in apartment 5C. I have been living in the building for five
years and have never had a problem. However, lately I have been unable to sleep at night because
of noises coming from my next door neighbor. I know that there are no pets allowed in the
building but I have been hearing some animal noises coming from next door. It sounds like they
have a dog living with them. I don’t want to cause any trouble but the noise is keeping me up at
night and making my days at work very difficult. When my neighbor isn’t at home I can hear
whining and barking. I hate to be in this situation but unless something is done about this I don’t
think I will be able to get any sleep at all. This is especially problematic because I know my
neighbor works at night so the animal is always barking and crying when he’s not around. Since
you are the manager of the building I was hoping you could do something about this. Please call
me at 392-1555 to talk about this situation. Thank you. Bye.

Sample Answer:

Hello, Cecile. This is Eugene, the manager. I got your message as saying that you are a resident of
our apartment. However, there is a problem with animal noises coming from your neighborhood
and you’d like for me to check on the matter.

First of all, I am really sorry to hear about the situation. However, I am happy to say that there is
a way to help you out. After checking into the situation, I came up with the following solutions.

I will call your neighbor and talk to them about the problem. I will ask him to get rid of the dog if
he’s keeping one. It is against the building policy. Also, I would put up some warning posters
reminding tenants that animals are not allowed in the building. It should be helpful to prevent
people from raising pets.

These are my suggestions. If you need any help or if the noise continues, feel free to call me back
anytime. Thank you. Bye.

Q#11 (15 seconds to prepare; 60 seconds to speak)

Teacher:

Do you agree that a job interview is the best way to hire suitable workers for a company?

Why or why not? Use specific reasons or examples to support your opinion.

Sample Answer:

I agree that a job interview is the best way to hire workers for several reasons. First of all, a job
interview helps employers evaluate their potential workers’ problem solving skills. For example,
applicants are asked to express their own opinions on a certain topic during the interview. So
depending on how logically the job candidates analyze the topic, employers can easily identify
good workers who will able to deal with problems at work. Second, employers can identify who
is the best for the position. To be specific, applicants have to respond to questions from
interviewers in a short time, and they are likely to feel pressure. But if they answer questions
immediately, they may perform better and thus be considered the best office worker in the
company. Therefore, I think companies should interview applicants in order to hire good
workers.

At the foreground, we can see the umpire and the batter anticipating the pitcher. They are both
wearing helmets. The ball was actually thrown and is in mid-air already. Behind the pitcher is an
adult man; he could be the games’ supervisor. And farther still, there are 2 catchers. All four of
them are wearing caps. The kids are wearing a touch of red, except for the umpire whose back is
light blue.

The baseball field looks clean, but the weather is not sunny. Maybe it’s already late in the

I visit the park in my neighborhood every day. Since I am a student, I don’t have enough money to
register at a gym. So I go jogging every day at the park. It is very good.

Q#5 (no preparation/ respond immediately; 15 seconds to answer)

What are some activities you can do in the park in your neighborhood?

Sample Answer:

In the park in my neighborhood, there are many people enjoying walking, jogging, and simple
workouts. It has a good trail for those things. Sometimes people enjoy picnics when the weather
is good.

Q#6 (no preparation/ respond immediately; 30 seconds to answer)

What are some improvements that could be made to the park in your neighborhood?

Sample Answer:

I think it would be better if they made some renovations in the park because the facilities in the
park are quite old. Every time I am jogging, I can find some cracks on the trail. Sometimes it is
very dangerous and makes me feel nervous. Also, some workout machines in the park are
damaged so they need to be replaced. If they make these renovations, it would be much better

Teacher:

Hello, this is Vance Petrelli, the manager of the convention center. We are currently scheduled to
host an international conference in July. This is held every year at our convention center, and is
very important for our business. There is only one week left till the event and the number of
visitors we are expecting that day continues to increase. We are also expecting that day
continues to increase. We are also expecting a very large number of cars to be coming in and I
believe we will need more space for parking. The timing of this event is very bad. Last week, we
had some damage to our parking lot and it is currently undergoing emergency construction.
Unfortunately, we can’t reschedule this and we will surely be short on parking that week. I have
already notified our customers of the situation, but I think that this could become a serious
problem and could cause serious damage to our reputation. Since you are my director, I thought
that you might have some helpful suggestions for resolving this matter. Please contact me as soon
as you get this message. Once again, this is Vance Petrelli, the convention center manager. Please
call me back at 920-4831. Thank you, ma’am. Good bye!

Sample Answer:

Hello, Vance. This is Terry, the director. I got your message saying that we are hosting an
international conference at our convention center. However, there is a problem because the
parking lot is under construction. So you’d like for me to check on this matter.

First of all, I am sorry to hear about the situation. However, I am happy to say that there is a way
to help you out. After checking into the situation, I came up with some solutions.

I think it is a good idea to ask the visitors to use public transportation by informing them of our
situation on our Web site. It would be effective because fewer people will bring their cars. Also,
why don’t we run shuttle buses from the main train stations nearby? It should be helpful to lead
people to use public transportation.

These are my suggestions. If you need more help, feel free to call me back anytime. Thank you.
Bye.

Teacher:

Who do you think is the most important category of people?

Please choose one among the following and support your opinion with reasons and examples.

• Politicians

• Scientists

• Teachers

Sample Answer:

I think the most important category of people from the choices above is teachers. The first
reason is that teachers are the first adults who children meet in society. To be specific, when
they enter preschool or elementary school after parting with their parents, they meet teachers
and are guided by them. Also, children think of them as role models and tend to follow what
they do without any critical thinking. In other words, children will learn any kind of behavior
regardless of whether it’s good or bad. Secondly, children spend most of their childhood with
teachers at pre-school and elementary school. To be specific, while they are growing up, they
form their sense of values and ethics through interacting with their teachers. Accordingly,
depending on how they learned, each child has a different point of view on the world. I believe
teachers heavily influence the personalities of their students. That’s why I think teachers are the
most important class of people.

Teacher:

Hello, this is Greg from the Administrative Department. Next month, our department will
introduce a new approval system to our company. We will try to finish the current approval
system with a high-technology program as fast as we can. Before replacing, we want to
demonstrate how to use this system to all our employees next Monday. But the problem is that
day is presidential Election Day, which is a public holiday, and it is the only day we can use our
main auditorium with 300 people. As you are the Manager of the Human Resources Department,
I think you might have had similar experiences like this. So, please give me any ideas you have on
how to encourage employees to attend this demonstration. I will wait for your phone call.
Thank you.

Sample Answer:

Hello, Greg. This is Vicky, manager at Human Resources. I heard your voice message asking me
for some ideas on how to boost the attendance rate. Here are some suggestions.

You’d better print the schedule of the education and post it on the bulletin boards on every floor.
At the same time, send to all employees by email. To make sure, ask all department managers to
notify employees of this education schedule during the upcoming regular Friday meeting. If you
use several sources to inform them simultaneously, everyone will know about it.

To boost the attendance rate, you can organize some sport activities by department after the
education. Alternatively, it also may be a good idea to change the date of the event.

If you need more assistance from me, feel free to call me anytime.

Teacher:

Some people believe small companies today have a harder time being successful than those in the
past. Do you agree or disagree? Give specific reasons and details to support your opinion.

Sample Answer:

I agree that small companies today have a harder time being successful than those in the past.

There are several reasons to support my opinion. Most of all, it is hard for small companies to
compete with big companies. For example, I started a small business about two years ago. It was
a Korean restaurant. At first, it was quite successful. I worked really hard and created new
dishes. After some time, people in my neighborhood became regular customers. However, one
day, a big restaurant from a restaurant chain opened right next to my restaurant. Since they had a
lot of money, they advertised the business everywhere. Also, they gave big discounts to their
customers. Moreover, they started to serve similar dishes as my restaurant. It was really hard to
compete with a big company. As time went by, I lost customers to them. And soon, I had to close
the business down.

This is the reason why I agree that small companies today have a harder time being successful
than those in the past.

I disagree that small companies today have a harder time being successful than those in the past.

There are several reasons to support my opinion. Most of all, small companies can compete with
big companies by providing different levels of service. For example, I started a small business
about two years ago. It was a Korean restaurant. One day, a big restaurant from a restaurant
chain opened next to my restaurant. Since they had a lot of money, they advertised their business
everywhere. Also they gave big discounts to their customers. However, I tried to be kind to my
customers and created new dishes. After some time, people in my neighborhood became regular
customers. Now my restaurant is doing better than my competitor next door.

This is the reason why I disagree that small companies today have a harder time being successful
than those in the past.

messages often.

Q#5 (no preparation/ respond immediately; 15 seconds to answer)

Have you been sending more text messages this year compared to last year?

Yes. Last year, I was single, so I don’t send text messages often. However, after I met my

messages.

Q#6 (no preparation/ respond immediately; 30 seconds to answer)

What are some advantages and disadvantages of sending text messages instead of calling
a person?

Sample Answer:

There are many advantages and disadvantages of sending text messages instead of calling a
person. If I use an application for sending texts, I don’t have to care about how much I spend. On
the other hand, with calling, I get an answer right away especially in emergency situations.
However, I think it is really convenient and cheap to send text messages.

Teacher:

Hello, this is Sandra. I am coordinating a fundraising event for the city library renovation. I am in
charge of organizing the charity event. I am trying to get as many people to attend as possible, so
I placed an advertisement in your newspaper a few days ago. The advertisement was printed
today and I noticed something was misprinted. In the advertisement it says that the event is
being held on Thursday, March 24th. It is actually being held on Thursday, March 31st! There are
only two weeks left till the event begins and I’m concerned that people will buy tickets thinking
that it is on 24th. This is a huge problem for me and it is something that needs to be fixed
immediately. Something like this could ruin the whole event. Since you are the editor of the
newspaper, I was hoping there could be something you could do to help us out. How do you
usually fix a problem like this? What are my options? This is very important! Please call me as
soon as you can. My number is 919-5552. Thank you and bye.

Sample Answer:

Hello, Sandra. This is Brandon, the editor of the newspaper. I got your message saying that you
are coordinating a fundraising event for the city library renovation. However, there is a problem
with the misprinted advertisement in our newspaper. So you’d like for me to check on this
matter.

First of all, I am sorry for the inconvenience we have caused you. However, I am happy to say that
there is a way to help you out. After checking into the situation, I came up with the following
situation.

I will put up an advertisement in tomorrow’s newspaper to correct the date. It should be helpful
in spreading the word about the right date. Also, I will post an announcement on our Web site to
apologize.

These are my suggestions. If you need more help, feel free to call me back anytime. Thank you.
Bye.

much as you can in the time allowed. You will have 15 seconds to prepare. Then you will have 60 seconds to speak.

Q#11 (15 seconds to prepare; 60 seconds to speak)

Teacher:

Which do you think is the most important skill which parents should teach their children?

• Communication skills

• How to spend money

• Independence

Please support your opinion with some reasons or examples.

Sample Answer:

I think the most important skill that parents should teach their children is how to spend money.
There are some reasons to support my opinion. First of all, if they learn how to spend money,
they can understand the value of money. It makes them spend money with much care. It seems
that they will think more carefully about which items they need. As a result, they can save a lot
of money from an early age.

The second reason is that they can practice how to spend money wisely. They could practice
saving with their small pocket money. With practical experience, they can develop good
spending habits. It will help them handle their salary efficiently when they get a job.

Therefore, parents have to teach the proper way to spend money.

This picture was taken outdoors, maybe in a park or in a community center. Some people are
standing in line on the sidewalk after a street vendor’s cart. They are queuing for Indian food
delicacies. The sign promotes vegetarian foods.

The cart has a lot of ads and signage on it. It has a big beach umbrella to shade some of the
customers.

It must be the cold part of autumn because some of people are wearing thick clothes like a trench
coat and a jacket. It is also sunny and bright. It must be noontime.

When did you last buy new shoes? Where did you buy them?

Sample Answer:

I bought a pair of hiking shoes about a month ago. I was planning to go hiking with my friends.
However, I didn’t have any shoes to hike. So I bought a pair online. They were great.

Q#5 (no preparation/ respond immediately; 15 seconds to answer)

How much are you willing to pay for a pair of shoes?

Sample Answer:

I am willing to pay about $100 for a pair of shoes. I don’t like buying cheap shoes because they
often have poor quality. So I think $100 is a reasonable price to get a nice pair of shoes.

Q#6 (no preparation/ respond immediately; 30 seconds to answer)

What do you consider most important when selecting a store to buy shoes?

Sample Answer:

I consider the brand most when selecting a store to buy shoes. If I have to buy shoes, I always
look for a good brand name store. Most of the time, branded stores offer good customer service.
There are a lot of different kinds of shoes and I can try all the shoes that I want. Also, I can get a
refund or free repair if there is a problem. So I don’t get stressed while wearing them.

Q#10 (30 seconds to prepare; 60 seconds to speak)

Teacher:

Hello, this is Aiden Herring. I am calling you about the survey I am doing, as you are the manager
of the Sales Department. You asked me to do research on the new accessories that will be
released this upcoming season. So I emailed questionnaires to all our regular customers. I asked
them to fill out the questionnaire and send it back to me. Actually, I expected that most of the
customers would respond to the survey, but only about 40% of the survey were returned. I need
to collect enough data from our customers to make a presentation at the conference this Friday.
Now, I don’t know what I should do. I was hoping you had some ideas for solving this problem.
Please call me back as soon as possible. Thank you.

Sample Answer:

Hello, Mr. Herring. This is Laura returning your phone call. I just received your message and
understand that you are having trouble with the survey on the new accessories. And the problem
is that you can’t get enough data from our customers, since they didn’t complete your
questionnaire and email it back to you.

In this case, I suggest that you email questionnaires to them again. However, this time, attach
10% discount coupons to these emails. You know most people tend to pay more attention to a
survey if they know they will be rewarded for their responses with discount coupons. So I
believe you can get more survey data from them.

Otherwise, you can conduct a survey on the street, especially in Madison. As you know,
Madison Avenue is always filled with lots of people, so you can receive answers much easier.

But if you need more time to fill them out, I can put off your meeting for a few more days. If you
have any questions, you can reach me at 978-5532. Bye.

Teacher:

Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

These days more and more people use electronic books than printed books. And some people say
that printed books will disappear in the near future.

Please support your opinion with some reasons or examples.

Sample Answer:

I think there are more disadvantages to reading an electronic book (e-book) than advantages
compared to a printed book.

First and foremost, many people still prefer to read the printed book since the e-book is difficult
to control. In many cases, we need to learn how to use an e-book properly. In particular, for the
elderly who normally have difficulty using high-tech devices, it would become another technical
barrier in terms of reading.

Secondly, an e-book tends to include distractions. The devices we use to read e-books rarely
have the sole function of reading and are starting to include other features such as gaming and
web surfing. As we use multiple functions simultaneously, we run out of battery faster. As a
result, another disadvantage is having to recharge when battery is drained.

That’s why I insist that reading a printed book is better than electronic books.
